[MARIANNE]

.

.

.

It had been a month since the mysterious naked man incident at the clinic. The man had appeared from inside the clinic, taken the key from the administration desk while I was asleep.

I saw him on the CCTV footage, but damn it, even the security camera had failed to capture his face. And most importantly, the wolf I had treated had also disappeared.

The wolf never came back to the clinic, and my life returned to normal. The only thing that kept crossing my mind was, what if the injured wolf had been a shapeshifter? It was common knowledge that some wealthy people owned slaves from the werewolf race.

I also didn’t understand why they became so weak. Weren’t they supposed to have greater strength,

speed, and cunning than ordinary humans? Then how did werewolves become slaves to humans?

“You’re daydreaming again.”

I blinked several times as Juan handed me a file containing the hospital’s financial report for the past year.

“It’s finished. Time for you to give this to Mr. Vance.”

I took the file and glanced through it. “In this digital age, why do I have to hand over a hard

copy? Can’t we just send it by email?”

Juan shrugged. “You go yourself, Mari. I’ll watch the clinic.”

“Me? Why me?”

“You’re also going to give your family company’s report to Mr. Vance, so you might as well do it at the same time. If we both leave, who’s going to watch the clinic?”

I let out a heavy sigh and stood up.

“Mari, since Mr. Vance didn’t attend the meeting last week, you can deliver the report directly to his residence. But you have to be careful. What if it turns out Mr. Vance keeps a werewolf slave too?”

Juan howled mockingly at me until I hit his shoulder with the documents in my hand.

“I understand.” I hurried toward my car and drove away. As I drove, I thought that perhaps the Vance family also had werewolf slaves. Among billionaires, owning a werewolf was apparently as normal as owning a luxury car, an advanced helper robot, or a collection of designer bags.

I was lucky my family had refused an offer to take a werewolf as a servant several years ago. My family believed that whether they were human or animal, no one should be exploited. Yes, for once, I agreed with them. But if they tried to arrange another marriage for me, I would still refuse outright!

After a forty-five-minute drive, I finally arrived at the Vance family mansion. At first, I thought they would refuse to let me in because I had arrived almost at ten at night, but the gates were still open.

I entered the mansion. There was nothing that impressed me. Everything was the same. Chandeliers, expensive paintings, a luxurious main staircase. I had seen it all before, at my grandmother’s house, my relatives’ homes, and my father’s clients’ residences. So I waited calmly.

“Miss Sinclair, please go to the second floor. Mr. Nikolai’s study is on the right.”

I nodded at the butler.

My footsteps were steady as I climbed the stairs. While I was here, I hadn’t found any signs

that the Vance family owned werewolf slaves.

Good.

The hallway on the second floor was very quiet. The farther I walked, the more my brow furrowed when I noticed bloodstains on the floor.

“What the hell?” I muttered and followed the trail of blood until I stopped in front of a slightly open door.

I peeked inside and saw torn clothes, covered in bloodstains. Someone was injured?!

My instincts as a doctor kicked in. I entered and picked up the clothes. They were torn and barely recognizable.

I was still examining them when I heard a groan from behind the door. Without thinking twice, I opened the door, and my eyes widened.

This time, I actually saw a naked man showering with his back toward me, and this time, there was absolutely nothing covering him!

“I—I didn’t see anything!” I shouted as Nikolai turned his head over his shoulder, finding my eyes wide open.

The next second, I slammed the door shut.

I intended to leave the documents on his bedside table and leave immediately, but Nikolai had already stepped out of the bathroom and stopped me.

“Stop right there.”

I froze. His voice was so cold that I almost hiccupped.

No, I had to explain before he misunderstood.

“I’m here to deliver the Sinclair company’s report and the report from the clinic you invested in. A butler told me to come to the second floor, and I came in here because I saw bloodstains. I also heard someone groaning, so I thought someone was injured. I didn’t know you were showering or busy with some other activity. I—”

“Doctor,” he interrupted.

I was still facing away from him, but I could tell his breathing was labored. So I turned around and saw his pale face.

"Help me. "

[NIKOLAI]...“Fast healing ability, the exact same location of the scar, and stitches that match mine exactly. Is it possible that you are… Mr. Shifter?”I fell silent, doing my best to keep the corners of my lips from curling into a smile. She wasstill smart, still as observant as she had been back then.Maria stood up. The one-foot height difference between us made her tilt her head back tolook at me. I looked into those eyes again. Those soft gray-green eyes that had made me alwayswant to protect her like the very first time we met.Thirteen years ago. My first year at Kingsley Academy.I thought I was going to have an ordinary day until I saw a girl carrying a baseball bat, chasing after several men. They ran away in fear, shouting that she was crazy.“What are you looking at?”Those were the first words she ever said to me.But when I looked into those eyes, my heart felt like it was being squeezed. It stopped for afew seconds, and I saw a vision of the future with

[MARIANNE]...I gasped and helped Nikolai lie down on his bed. His face was pale, and his body was covered in bruises and scratches. He looked like he had just been mauled by a bear.My index finger touched one of his scratches, where the skin had been torn open. He hissed, his hand gripping the bedsheet as the muscles in his abdomen tensed. Since he had just showered, droplets of water from the tips of his hair trickled down, leaving trails across hischest before sliding over his eight-pack abs. I swallowed hard and looked away, trying tosteady my breathing while pushing inappropriate thoughts out of my mind.“Luckily, your wounds aren’t deep. They don’t need stitches. They should close up again within a few days if you have a good healing ability. We just need to wrap them with bandages,” I said, trying to sound professional.“They’re in the nightstand.”Nikolai glanced at the nightstand beside the bed. I opened the drawer and was surprised tosee how many bandages an

[MARIANNE]...I hate this. I hate it when I don’t have money, because then I can’t refuse or act all high and mighty in front of my parents.I knew they were telling me to meet Mr. Vance because they wanted to set me up again, and this time I couldn’t refuse because all my money was gone from treating a wild wolf and replacing the clinic window. So, I guess going on two or three dates with Mr. Vance wouldn’t hurt as long as Dad was willing to give me money. Okay, this time, let’s lower our pride. At exactly twelve o’clock, I arrived at a five-star restaurant lounge for lunch. My heels clicked against the marble floor as I walked confidently toward a table. I approached a man sitting alone in a black pinstripe suit. His black hair was neatly slicked back, with a few strands falling across his forehead.“Mr. Vance?” I asked firmly. He looked up from his phone. I found myself staring into olive-hazel eyes with a molten gold ring around the pupil.“Yes,” he replied shortly.“Marianne S

[MARIANNE]...I looked at the wolves surrounding us one by one. I was afraid this pack might suddenly attack. Of course, there was no way I could fight them. I didn’t have a weapon, and I was alone here.My heart was pounding. Honestly, I was scared. At first, I intended to take Bolt back inside the clinic and lock the door tightly, maybe even call the police and the fire department? Who knew if this pack of wolves became aggressive and attacked the clinic? But the injured wolf let out a deep, low growl. Slowly, one by one, the wolves backed away until my mouth fell half open.“What the hell…?”I was stunned to see the wolves simply run away. Meanwhile, the wolf lying on the ground let out a soft, pitiful sound. I immediately rolled up my sleeves.“You’ve lost a lot of blood. If you promise not to bite me, I’ll help you, okay?”The wolf slowly blinked its eyes as if it understood what I was saying, as if it were promising me. I let out a heavy breath and prepared to drag it into th

[MARIANNE]...A full year. Twelve men. I was done with this. I was sick and tired of all the introductions and small talk. But apparently, my parents were not willing to give up until their eldest daughter found a man willing to marry her.“You’re 29 years old, Marianne.” My father, Martin Sinclair, wisely opened the conversation I had been avoiding the most, especially at a dinner with the entire extended family.“Is there something wrong with the number 29?” I raised my glass, slowly swirling the wine inside it.My grandmother stared at me sternly. “You are the first grandchild of the Sinclair family, and I expect you to soon give us the first great-grandchild, one who is worthy and capable of preserving the dignity of the Sinclair family.”“Twelve men, Maria. Twelve men from respectable families, with good educational backgrounds, careers, and futures, yet you rejected every single one of them?” my mother added. She looked at me worriedly.I looked at them one by one. In this da
