Chapter 4

Author: Bright Iridium
“Dad, did you hear what I said?” Callum tugged on Luther’s hand. “I want chocolate cake!”

Luther pulled his gaze away and looked down at the boy. His voice was low. “Your fever just went down. You can’t eat that yet.”

Callum looked disappointed. He puffed out his lips and fell silent.

Luther rubbed his head. “When your cold is completely gone, I’ll buy it for you.”

“Okay.” Callum nodded obediently, without throwing a tantrum. Then he turned and pointed at the display case. “Then let’s buy the strawberry cake Mommy likes the most today, okay?”

“Alright.” Luther nodded.

He asked the staff to pack a slice of strawberry cake and scanned his phone to pay.

From beginning to end, he didn’t look toward Sabrina even once.

Sabrina sat there quietly, watching them without blinking.

The way Luther patiently coaxed the boy made him look like the perfect father.

If her children had lived, would Luther have treated them with the same patience and gentleness?

In the past, Sabrina would have rushed over immediately and demanded an explanation.

But not anymore.

Luther’s complete indifference had already given her the clearest answer.

That child named Callum had taken all of Luther’s fatherly love.

He had long forgotten the twins.

Now he had a new home, a new child, and he was no longer the husband she once knew.

Their marriage had already rotted from the inside.

No amount of questioning or arguing would change anything.

Still, watching Luther treat that child with such tenderness, she could not stop the resentment rising inside her.

Her children deserved better.

Why did Luther get to live so comfortably, as if none of this had ever happened?

Luther seemed completely unaware of the hatred building inside her.

He walked out of the café with the cake in one hand and the child’s hand in the other.

His tall figure stretched long in the sunlight. Beside him, Callum walked with light, cheerful steps as the two of them headed toward the Maybach parked by the curb.

It was a warm, picture-perfect scene.

One of the young part-time baristas in the café watched them leave and rested her chin in her hands with a dreamy sigh.

“When you pick a husband, you’ve got to pick a handsome one. Look at that dad and son. Both so good-looking. Those genes are unbeatable. I wonder which lucky woman married him…”

The café’s soft music couldn’t drown out her voice.

Every word sounded like a slap across Sabrina’s face.

Heather looked at Sabrina cautiously. “Sabrina… are you okay?”

Sabrina’s pale lips pressed together tightly. One hand clenched into a fist, her nails digging into her palm.

In her memory, Luther had always been a workaholic.

He was naturally distant, but as her husband he never forgot the holidays. His assistant would always send her gifts on his behalf, making sure she had the dignity and respect expected of Mrs. William.

She thought that was simply the kind of man he was.

But the past two days had shattered that illusion.

Five years of marriage and the loss of their twins had meant nothing in the end.

They couldn’t compete with a mistress’s persistence and a child calling him “Dad.”

The phone in her bag vibrated.

Sabrina took it out.

A text message.

From Luther.

‘I’ll be home tonight.’

Just a few short words.

Not an explanation.

A command.

Sabrina stared at the message and let out a cold, humorless laugh.

That quiet sound carried all the bitterness and heartbreak she had buried inside.

Heather looked at Sabrina, but this time, no words of comfort would come.

All that was left in her eyes was pity.

Just then, Heather’s phone rang.

It was Adrian.

She answered at once. “Adrian… what? A fever? It’s okay, it’s okay. Your daughter comes first. Don’t worry, I’ll explain it to my friend…”

Sabrina watched her.

After Heather hung up, Sabrina finally asked, “What happened?”

Heather lowered her phone and looked at Sabrina helplessly. “Adrian said his daughter has a fever. He has to take her to the hospital first, so we’ll have to reschedule.”

“He’s married?”

“No.” Heather shook her head. “The child belongs to his first love.”

Lowering her voice, she leaned in and added, “Before she died of cancer, she entrusted the child to him.”

Sabrina paused. “You mean the girl isn’t Adrian’s biological daughter?”

“Of course not.”

Whenever Heather talked about Adrian, she could never help sighing.

“After she gave birth, her condition worsened. Her husband’s family didn’t want the burden of medical bills, and her own family kept their distance. Adrian couldn’t just walk away, so he paid for her treatment. After she passed away, no one wanted the child, so he adopted her.”

Hearing that, Sabrina instinctively rested a hand over her lower belly.

Heather went on, “The little girl was premature, so she’s always been fragile and hard to care for. I saw her once at a dinner at my professor’s house. She’s already five, but she looks more like a two- or three-year-old. Tiny, so thin. But she’s really beautiful. Honestly, she doesn’t even look much like her mother… Anyway, she gets sick all the time. The doctors said she never adjusted to the climate overseas. After all that, Adrian finally decided to bring her back to settle here for good.”

Sabrina had to admit, she admired him.

To do that much for a child he had adopted spoke volumes about his character.

At the very least, after hearing all this, she felt there was nothing to question about the kind of man Adrian was.

And as for his ability, that was beyond doubt.

Sabrina decided she wanted Adrian to handle her divorce case.

“Heather, tell your senior to take care of his daughter first. I can wait.”

Heather flashed her an okay sign. “Got it. I’ll text him.”

After leaving the café, Sabrina and Heather went their separate ways.

Sabrina did not go home.

There was still one more thing she had to do.

At the base of the YAH Jewelry tower, Sabrina parked her car and stepped out with her bag in hand.

Six years ago, she and Luther had founded this jewelry company together.

Sabrina held sixty-one percent of the shares. Luther held thirty percent. The remaining nine percent was split among the other shareholders.

As the founder, Sabrina had led the company to stunning results in its very first year.

That same year, YAH Jewelry shot onto the international jewelry rankings like a dark horse.

She had trained Mindy personally, step by step.

When she was five months pregnant, she promoted Mindy to vice president and stepped away from work to focus on her pregnancy.

That day, Mindy had held her hand with tears in her eyes and promised over and over, “Sabrina, I’ll never let you down after all the trust and support you’ve given me. You stay home and rest. I’ll protect the company with everyone else. We’ll all be waiting for you to come back and lead us to even greater success.”

And now, the company’s founder stood in the lobby on the first floor, blocked by two security guards and loudly told that unauthorized people were not allowed inside.

Sabrina looked at the two guards with cold eyes.

Five years was still a very long time.

Enough time for everything that should have changed, and everything that shouldn’t have, to change anyway.

She had just opened her mouth to speak when the elevator doors in the lobby slid open.

Mindy stepped out first, followed by a group of people, and walked straight toward her.

It was his private phone.Sabrina glanced at the pocket where it was vibrating and curled her lips coldly. “Aren’t you going to answer that, Mr. William? It might be your precious Mindy calling.”Luther shot her a frown, then released his grip on her and took out the phone. The call was coming from the landline at Cloudbrook. He answered immediately. “What is it?”“Sir, something’s wrong. He cleared his throat. “Right, well… I just remembered I’ve got something else to take care of. I’ll head out first.”With that, he slipped out of the office. An uneasy silence settled over the room.Luther rose to his feet and looked at Sabrina, his brows drawn tight. “Sabrina, I thought you’d be able to understand.”“Understand what?” Sabrina let out a cold laugh. “Understand that right after I lost my babies, you used my name to adopt Callum? Or understand that you and Mindy were secretly carrying on under the excuse of raising your brother’s child?”His expression turned impatient. “I told you. What’s between Mindy and me is not what you think.”“Luther, you’re unbelievable.” Sabrina glared at him. “Do I really have to catch you two in bed before you’ll admit what’s going on?”Luther’s face darkened. “Sabrina, enough.”“I went to Cloudbrook.”Luther

Luther looked at her fury and let out what seemed like a helpless sigh. Then he picked up the desk phone. “Bring the file in.”He hung up.A moment later, Nick pushed the door open and hurried in with a folder in hand.“Sir, everything’s here.” He placed the folder on the desk.Luther leaned back lazily in his chair. “Show it to Madam.”Nick turned and held the folder out to Sabrina. “Madam, please take a look.”Sabrina did not take it right away. She glanced at the folder and frowned. “What is this?”“You’ll know once you read it,” Luther said evenly. After a brief pause, Sabrina finally took the folder.…The file was thorough.Inside was a paternity report, along with a stack of photographs. The man in the photos had a face identical to Luther’s, except for a small blue mole at the corner of his eye.The paternity test also showed a biological father-son relationship.Sample 1: Father, Evan William.Sample 2: Son, Callum William.Sabrina frowned. “Who is Evan William

Her face stayed cold. “How much longer will Luther be?”Nick lifted his wrist and checked his watch. “The meeting should wrap up in about half an hour.”“I understand.” Sabrina walked over to the couch and sat down. Then she looked up at him. “I’ll wait for him. Go ahead and get back to work.”“Of course. If you need anything, just let me know. I’ll take my leave now.” Nick gave a slight nod and left the office. The door shut behind him, and the room fell quiet.Sabrina took out her phone and op

For a moment, the little girl and the grown woman simply stared at each other in silence.“Cecilia Cross.”A man’s gentle voice came from behind her.Sabrina turned around. At some point, Adrian had appeared a few steps behind her.Meeting her gaze, he spoke again. “She’s trying to say her name is Cecilia Cross. Her pronunciation just isn’t very clear yet.”“Daddy~”The moment Ceci saw Adrian, her eyes lit up. She immediately turned and ran toward him.Adrian bent down and picked his daughter up, then looked at Sabrina. “Ms. Chatsworth, I hope Ceci didn’t cause you any trouble.”Sabrina stood up and looked at him. “Not at all. Ceci’s adorable.”The little girl lifted one small finger and pointed at Sabrina. “Mommy~”Adrian froze for a second, then turned to look at Sabrina.Sabrina pressed her lips together, clearly a little embarrassed.“Ceci, this is Miss Chatsworth,” Adrian explained patiently to his daughter.“Remember what Daddy told you? “Ceci!”An adult’s voice called out from inside the law firm.Sabrina looked up just in time to see a middle-aged woman hurrying toward them, panic written all over her face.“Oh my goodness, my little sweetheart!”The woman crouched down in front of the little girl and let out a helpless sigh. “I only stepped away to use the bathroom for a minute. How did you run all the way out here by yourself?”The little girl kept clinging to Sabrina, her wide doe-liked eyes fixed on the woman without saying a word.Seeing that, Sabrina asked, “Are you her family?”The woman stood up and quickly explained, “Oh, no. I’m just one of the cleaning staff here at the law firm. She’s Mr. Cross’s daughter. She’s very attached to him, so she comes to the office with him every day. When Mr. Cross is busy working, the rest of us help keep an eye on her.”So that was it.Sabrina said, “Kids this age are curious and don’t understand danger.
