Chapter 20- A Storm beneath the Calm

The morning sun broke through the city skyline, casting a golden hue on the glass panels of William’s company headquarters. Lily walked briskly through the marble-floored lobby, her heels clicking with purpose, but her mind stormed with agitation.

After everything that had unfolded, the last place she wanted to be was here — under the same roof as William. Yet again, fate had shoved them together, this time not as lovers, but as employer and employee.

She entered the conference floor, clutching her documents close. The large boardroom was already buzzing with executives. William stood near the far end, deep in conversation with the strategy head. His charcoal suit was perfectly tailored, his stance firm, commanding. But when his eyes flicked toward her, there was a flicker of something else — something unreadable.

She turned quickly, hoping to avoid unnecessary interaction. But his voice rang out clearly for half the office to hear.

"Miss Lily, don’t forget your performance review is Friday. Let’s see if you last more than two weeks this time."

A few people chuckled. Lily stopped in her tracks.

Turning with a composed smile, she replied, "Thanks for the encouragement, Sir. Glad to know I’m being taken seriously."

He arched a brow. "Taken seriously? I moved you from the 'unemployed' list to my personal amusement section."

Her cheeks flared, but she kept her cool and walked up to him, lowering her voice. "You fired me without explanation. And now you’re mocking me in front of your team. What exactly do you want from me, William?"

He smirked. "What I’ve always wanted — results. And maybe a coffee, if you're offering."

Lily exhaled sharply and walked to her seat.

Later That Afternoon – A Café Across the City

Nany sat alone in a quiet corner of her favorite café, typing notes for her international peace program. A couple of reference books and her open laptop formed a fortress around her coffee cup.

She barely noticed the tall figure across the café until he glanced in her direction.

Justin.

He was in the middle of a business meeting, surrounded by two sharply dressed men. Their conversation seemed intense, but when his eyes caught Nany’s, he offered a polite smile. She nodded back.

Minutes later, after the meeting ended, Justin walked over.

"Didn’t expect to see a peace ambassador buried in paperwork," he said, setting his cup on the table.

Nany chuckled. "Didn’t expect to see a business mogul this far from the skyscrapers."

He smiled. "We all need our moments of escape."

The conversation started casual — weather, projects, mutual acquaintances. But beneath it, something subtle sparked. A shared understanding. Respect.

Before he left, he said, "If I run into you again, I’ll take that as fate."

She replied, "Or excellent coffee."

Evening – William’s Mansion

Lily moved around the room, folding her clothes and stuffing them into her suitcase. Her mind was made up.

William entered, watching her quietly.

"Going somewhere?" he asked coolly.

"Yes," she replied without looking up. "I’m leaving."

"You seem to be good at that," he muttered.

She froze. "What’s that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing," he shrugged. "Just that running away is easier than dealing with things."

Lily turned toward him, anger surfacing. "You fired me without cause. Now you rehire me only to mock me in front of your staff. I don’t have to stay and take that."

William took a sip of his drink, calm as ever. "You’re joining my company. That’s final."

She scoffed. "Excuse me? You can’t just order me around."

He stepped closer, a glint in his eyes. "You’re a good employee. I need people who don’t crumble under pressure."

She blinked. "Now I’m good? After firing me?"

"I was testing something," he said vaguely.

She narrowed her eyes. "And what exactly were you testing?"

He leaned in slightly. "Whether you’d come back."

Her breath hitched.

"Why does it even matter?" she asked.

He didn’t answer, just walked past her and added, "Your desk is still empty. Use it or leave it."

Fuming, Lily snapped her suitcase shut. "You’re impossible."

"And you’re still here," he replied, not turning.

Nightfall – Lily’s Apartment

She stood near the window, city lights blinking far below. Everything inside her was twisted. Frustration, confusion, anger — and somewhere deep, pain she hadn’t fully unpacked.

Why did he care now?

Why did she?

Her phone buzzed. A message from Nany: “Had the strangest café coincidence today. Tell you tomorrow.”

Lily smiled faintly.

But her thoughts circled back to William.

This wasn’t over.

Not even close.

Later that night, Lily opened her inbox and found a strange email. No subject, no sender name. Just a line:"Watch your back. You’re playing in a bigger game than you think."Attached was a PDF: a conversation between Natasha and someone named Jimmy.Lily’s heart pounded.Jimmy = Justin Millar! She skimmed through the messages. It was simple official conversation, but nothing criminal. Still, Natasha and Justin were in touch behind the scenes. She picked up her phone and texted Nany:We need to dig deeper. The buzz of the grand company event still lingered in the air the next morning, though the glitz had faded into silence. Lily had left the venue early, the echoes of whispered judgments and fake smiles still haunting her. Now, as she stepped back into the office, everything looked the same—but felt entirely different. The office felt unusually still that morning—eerily silent, like the moment just before thunder cracks open a dark sky.Lily stood near the elevator, organizing the last few files she had retrieved from the records room. Her heels clicked softly against the marbled floor as she made her way to William’s office. She was early—perhaps too early. But after the week she had endured—being framed, humiliated in front of her colleagues, and barely getting through Natasha's sharp remarks—she had started arriving earlier and leaving later. It was the only way to keep her head above water. As she reached the CEO’s office, the door was slightly ajar. William was already inside, sta

The wind outside rustled gently against the curtains as Lily leaned against her kitchen counter, a mug of lukewarm tea in her hand. She hadn’t slept well. Not because of nightmares—those had become routine—but because of the weight of the week ahead.Today was the company’s grand annual event. The one Lily used to attend with pride as a regular employee. Now, she would be attending not just as an employee, not even as William’s secretary—but as a woman surrounded by whispers, half-truths, and layers of corporate deception. She hadn’t told anyone what she had found in the confidential emails, not even Justin. She had printed copies and tucked them under a floorboard in her apartment, far from the reach of anyone who might come looking. The dress code was formal. Lily had chosen a sleek, wine-colored dress that didn’t scream for attention, but gave her just enough of it. It wasn’t for William or anyone else—it was for her. A reminder that she hadn’t broken yet.By 5 PM, the event hall w

The tension at the office had only grown since the threat on my apartment door. I didn’t return home—I couldn’t. Every breath I took outside the safety of William’s company felt like it came with a target painted on my back. I was done ignoring the signs. Done pretending this was all coincidence. Someone was orchestrating this. And the alias "ML" kept echoing through my thoughts like a warning bell. After grabbing a large black coffee, I sat at my desk and opened the HR portal. I tried a few access routes to search for “ML” or anything close. Nothing. Access restricted. Clearance required. Even with the CEO’s secretary tag, I couldn’t see upper-executive alias records.I shot a message to Nany.L: I can’t get into the HR archives. Blocked.N: Give me ten minutes. She was in another department, but her tech guy friends had proven resourceful more than once. While I waited, I went through the company-wide mail logs—at least what I had access to. The phrase “AtlasPhoenix” kept coming up

The next morning, I woke to a pounding headache and a heart racing from restless dreams. The photo from last night replayed in my mind on a loop. Someone had taken a picture of me and Nany, then left it in my desk drawer. It was a message.A threat.I took no chances this time. I left my personal phone at home, packed Nany's burner in my purse, and backed up Kevin's flash drive contents to a private cloud folder I had created overnight. Every precaution felt like a drop in the ocean, but I couldn’t afford any slip-ups. Not now. When I reached the office, the tension was so thick it nearly choked me. People looked away when I passed, and Samantha was already at her desk, humming cheerfully. She barely glanced at me.I ignored her. But something was off.Wait—wasn’t Samantha fired? The question nagged at me. I remembered the chaos and fallout from the previous weeks. She had been escorted out by HR after trying to sabotage my work. So why was she back now like nothing had happened?Befo

The office was unusually silent the next morning, as if the entire building was holding its breath. I stepped in, clutching my bag tightly, the weight of the flash drive inside a constant reminder of what I was getting into. Kevin's confession had shifted something inside me. I was no longer simply trying to reclaim my career—I was trying to uncover a dangerous lie.I powered on my computer and checked my emails. Nothing new from Kevin. I opened a fresh notebook and began scribbling names, dates, and fragments of the evidence I'd found. AtlasPhoenix. RedSparrow. VisionTech sabotage. Internal override. Hidden development. Third-party investors. Each piece was a thread, and I was finally starting to see the web. Then, without warning, my screen flickered.A message popped up. No sender. No subject."Stop digging, Lily. You don't know who you're dealing with."My heart stopped.I read it again, then a third time. The message vanished.I stared blankly at the screen. No trace. No draft. N
