Pain.

That was the first thing I felt when consciousness crawled back into my body. Sharp, burning pain that radiated from my chest and spread through every nerve ending like fire. I tried to move but my limbs felt like they were made of lead.

My eyelids fluttered open. Bright white ceiling tiles came into focus above me. Beeping sounds filled my ears, rhythmic and insistent. I tried to turn my head but even that small movement sent agony shooting through my shoulder.

"Oh my God, he's awa

MitchelleI paced the hospital hallways like a caged animal, my blood-stained dress drew concerned looks from nurses and other visitors. Danika had tried to get me to sit down multiple times, but I couldn't. If I stopped moving, if I let myself be still for even a moment, the reality of what had happened would crush me completely.Dorian had been rushed into the emergency section over an hour ago. The doors had swung shut behind the paramedics and doctors, leaving me stranded in this sterile corridor with nothing but fear and prayers.Luther stood near the window making quiet phone calls, probably updating Elena and handling the aftermath of the disaster at the venue. Danika stayed close to me, her hand occasionally reached out to touch my arm or shoulder in silent support. My phone rang suddenly, the sound jarred in the tense silence. I pulled it from my purse with shaking hands and saw my stepmother's name on the screen. Why was Chloe's mother calling me right now?I answered hesita

ChloeJason and I stood frozen for a moment after Danika dragged Mitchelle away, both of us watched Luther's car speed out of the parking lot with tires screeching."We should leave," Jason stated quietly, his face was still pale from where Mitchelle had grabbed and hit him.I nodded numbly and followed him to our car. The venue behind us was swarming with police now, officers cordoning off the area and interviewing witnesses. Sirens continued wailing in the distance.Jason started the engine and we pulled away from the chaos. Neither of us spoke for several minutes, the silence in the car became heavy and suffocating."That useless bitch," I finally muttered, staring out the window.Jason glanced at me sharply."I told you we shouldn't have come," he replied. "Now look what happened. I just hope Dorian is fine. We should head to the hospital."I whipped my head around to stare at him in disbelief."What hospital? What do you mean hospital?""My uncle got shot, remember?" Jason respon

Mitchelle"Dee! Dee, please look at me! Please open your eyes, it's me, Chelley!"My hands were covered in his blood, warm and sticky, spreading across my emerald dress in dark stains that grew larger with every second. I pressed harder against the wound in his chest, trying desperately to stop the bleeding, but it kept coming, pulsing between my fingers with terrifying force.Dorian's eyes were half-closed, his face became pale and slack. His lips moved slightly but no sound came out."Stay with me!" I screamed, in a broken voice. "Dorian, please, stay with me!"Danika appeared beside me, grabbing my shoulders and trying to pull me away."No!" I sobbed. "No, I can't leave him!"Luther was somewhere behind us, his voice was loud and urgent as he spoke into his phone."Yes, there's been a shooting! We need an ambulance immediately! The victim has been shot in the chest, there's massive bleeding!"The crowd around us had dissolved into chaos. People were screaming and running in all dir

DorianThe master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone with an enthusiastic smile, his voice boomed through the sound system.“Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready?” he screamed into the microphone. The crowd erupted, “Yes we are!”“I can’t hear you!” he yelled again, pacing across the stage.“YES WE ARE!” they roared back, louder this time.Beside me, Chelley tightened her grip on my hand. Her palm was cold, her fingers trembled slightly. I glanced at her and saw the nervousness written all over her face. Gently, I rubbed her palm with my thumb, slow circles meant to calm her heartbeat, and maybe mine too."Ladies and gentlemen, it is now my absolute pleasure to invite to the stage the most gorgeous, the latest, the amiable CEO of Chelley Innovations, Mrs. Mitchelle Roth!"The room erupted in applause. I began clapping immediately, loud and proud, and watched as everyone else followed my lead. The energy in the room was electric, hundreds of people cheering for my wife as she s

ChloeJason and I had arrived at the venue about twenty minutes earlier, both of us were silent during the drive. The building looked impressive from the outside, all glass and modern architecture with those ridiculous banners displaying Chelley Innovations logo everywhere.Jason had immediately been pulled away by someone he recognized from the business world, leaving me to wander through the growing crowd alone. I accepted a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and surveyed the room as I navigated the crowd.I spotted Mitchelle near the entrance talking to an older woman in a burgundy suit, probably that Petrova person everyone kept mentioning. Dorian was a few feet away engaged in conversation with a group of men in expensive suits. As I tapped her on the back, watching as she turned around with that professional smile already plastered on her face. "Chloe?" she breathed, clearly shocked to see me."Oh Mitchelle, congratulations!" I exclaimed warmly, pulling her into a tight

MitchelleI stood in the empty lobby of what would officially become my company headquarters tomorrow, staring up at the gleaming sign that read "Chelley Innovations" in sleek modern letters. The entire space had been transformed over the past month into something that exceeded even my most ambitious visions.Elena Petrova had left just an hour ago after our final walkthrough, nodding approvingly at every detail. The staff had been hired and trained, security protocols were established, and the event planner had confirmed that everything was ready for tomorrow's opening ceremony. It was really happening. In less than twenty-four hours, I would officially be a CEO.My phone buzzed with a text from Dorian asking when I'd be home. I smiled and typed back that I was leaving now, then took one last look around the space before heading to my car.On the drive home, I stopped at an upscale boutique I had visited earlier in the week. The sales associate had wrapped three carefully selected gi
