Chapter 4

Anzac Little
"I'm asking–no, insisting–that you investigate my wife properly!"

My parents, who heard the commotion upstairs, rushed down just in time to catch what I said. My mother stamped her foot anxiously.

"Son, what are you saying? Hannah's kind and devoted–how could she possibly do something like this?"

Hannah froze, stunned. After a long moment, tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke, each word slow and deliberate.

"Arthur, do you even hear yourself?

"I gave up my job for this family. I became a housewife, taking care of your parents and our child.

"And now that you're under suspicion and can't get out of it, the first thing you do is drag me down with you?"

Looking at the genuine hurt on her face, doubt crept into my mind.

"But, other than the two of us, no one else could've driven that car."

Hannah choked back a sob, her eyes filled with sorrow.

"I was afraid of getting into an accident–I'm not familiar with the roads, and my driving isn't good. So I asked the guesthouse owner to hire a local driver to take me."

"And here I was, racking my brain trying to buy medicine for you. What a joke!"

She pulled out several boxes of medicine from her pocket and threw them in front of me.

Instantly, the crowd erupted in a wave of curses.

Even the witnesses who were waiting inside the police car to give a statement jumped out, furious.

"I was planning to confront you at the station, you sick murderer–but I can't hold back anymore! And you still have the nerve to frame your own wife?"

"Who was it that dumped that bloody suitcase and then rushed back into the car to fool around with another woman?"

He raised his hand as if swearing an oath.

"I swear on my dignity–that woman was definitely not this kind and gentle-looking mother standing here!"

"Exactly!" someone else chimed in. "While they were going at it in the car, they even rolled down the window and flipped us off!"

"He shouted that if we had the guts, we should call the police–said he's a famous rocket engineer, and if anyone dared touch him, the country's aerospace program would suffer!"

"Look–my phone caught everything! I recorded it so we could catch this scumbag as soon as possible!"

On their screens was a half-dressed man.

He looked exactly like me.

The woman beside him, with her flirtatious eyes, I never saw her before in my life.

Hannah's hands trembled as she replayed the video again and again. Finally, she could not hold back–she rushed forward and slapped me hard across the face.

"All this time, you kept saying you wanted to buy me my favorite snacks. So, that was just your excuse to sneak off and meet that woman?"

"She even followed you all the way here just for a moment of pleasure. You two have no shame–but what about me? What about your parents? Your child?"

"The video is this clear–how are you going to smear me now?"

Cold sweat broke out across my back.

"Where is that woman? I can confront her!"

The police officer let out a cold laugh.

"The surveillance system shows that after the incident, you fled with her–drove into the mountains, to a place with no cameras. That's likely where she got out."

"When the car appeared again, you were alone."

"Such a key witness–either you sent her away, or you got rid of her. We'd like to know where she is, too."

I was completely speechless.

The officer twisted my arm behind my back with disdain and snapped cold handcuffs onto my wrists.

"At this point, for the sake of your family, you'd better confess and cooperate. You might get a lighter sentence."

However, the crowd was not satisfied.

Enraged, they hurled stones and dirty water at me.

"Officer, execute him as soon as possible! We won't feel safe otherwise!"

"Damn it–this kind of monster kills, dumps the body, cheats on his wife, and still tries to frame her? He deserves to die!"

"He must be a psychopath–who else would murder someone and dump the body in broad daylight?"

Suddenly, a thought struck me.

I struggled again and shouted, "Officer–after all this, who exactly are you saying I killed?"

A month later, the police informed me that the case was fully resolved.Adam–driven to despair after being rejected by the woman he idolized– confessed to everything. As it turned out, the moment he learned about our booking at the countryside guesthouse, he began planning the entire crime. He murdered the village doctor in cold blood, dismembered the body, packed it into a suitcase, and placed it in my car.He even hired a salon girl to pose as his lover, feeding her a script to follow. Afterward, he paid her a large sum and sent her out of the province. Now, he was captured.Everything that followed matched my earlier suspicions. The brazen, high-profile disposal of the body was meant to ruin my reputation. The sudden, violent blow he dealt me left me disoriented and defenseless–ensuring I would take the fall while my name was dragged through the dirt.He also admitted that once I was taken away in a police car, he planned to break the lock on the hotel room I booked for my par

Hannah stared at him in disbelief."Adam, have you lost your mind?"You killed the person who saved your life over this?"He let out a twisted laugh, then turned to the woman he loved with a tender expression."Hannah, for you–forget that old man. Even if it were my own parents, I'd do it.As long as it frees you from this misery, I'd do anything."A flicker of disgust crossed Hannah's eyes. She walked over and hooked her arm through mine."You're wrong. Meeting Arthur was the greatest blessing of my life.""He fights on the front lines of scientific research, giving everything for the greater good. And I stay behind, taking care of our home so he can do that.""Yes, I've had my share of hardships. But I understand–this is my way of serving the country too."Her voice turned cold."And you? You graduated as an outstanding student, yet you've turned into a bitter, twisted failure.""Always ready to throw your life away over petty emotions. Ungrateful. Heartless.""Compared t

So it turned out that Adam's obsessive love for Hannah did not fade after graduation–it only grew stronger.Especially five years ago, when he heard that we were expecting a child, the pain became unbearable.Drunk, he drove up to the mountain Hannah loved most and crashed straight into a tree. The car caught fire.An old village doctor pulled him out of the flames, badly burned, and took him home to treat him with painstaking care. When he finally recovered, the clean-cut, handsome look he once had was gone. But at least he looked like an ordinary person again.Years under the harsh highland sun darkened his skin, hiding most of the graft scars. The old doctor knew he was an orphan–and now, with everyone believing him dead in that fire, he had no identity left.Out of kindness, the doctor asked him to stay and help care for his sister, taking the place of his useless nephew. The real Kendrick had long since abandoned the mountains for the cities, unwilling to shoulder any resp

The police officer let out a sigh."Honestly, if it weren't for your past contributions to scientific research–beating international competitors at their own game–I would've already hauled you back for interrogation multiple times."He fixed me with a stern look."This is your last chance. If you still can't prove it, you're coming back with me to confess. Stop wasting public resources."I nodded."Then please go upstairs and retrieve the village doctor's belongings. Test them against Kendrick's DNA. Once the results are out, my innocence will be clear."Adam finally panicked and jumped in."On what grounds are you touching my personal belongings? Just because of her baseless accusations, you want the police to barge into my guesthouse and search it? If word gets out, how am I supposed to run my business?"The officer hesitated."He has a point. Based on what you've said so far, we don't have the authority to search a private residence."I smiled calmly."Fine. Then bring me

"Arthur, your case has drawn serious attention from your unit. An investigation team has already been assigned to gather evidence alongside the police."We've carefully reviewed everything you said during your livestream, but the claims simply don't hold up. There's no way to close the loop on your argument.""After thorough consideration, we strongly advise you to cooperate with the authorities and accept the official findings. Stop causing harm to innocent people.""As for your accusations against Kendrick–don't continue down that path.""From what I understand, the old village doctor who passed away was once honored for acts of bravery. And yes, he did have a nephew–but there's no motive for him to harm you.""If this continues, it won't just damage you–it'll drag your entire organization's reputation down with it.""Turn yourself in as soon as possible. The police will continue to investigate and get to the bottom of things."My heart sank.So this was it. The trap Adam lai

Every single name on the list read the same: Kendrick Smith. In that instant, it hit me–I underestimated him.Back then, he must have faked his death to escape. And if that was the case, he would have taken on a new identity as well.Thinking back to the village doctor who died earlier, a bold theory began to take shape in my mind."I get it now!" I blurted out. "Adam's car accident on that mountain road–it must have happened on this very mountain!"My voice grew steadier as the pieces fell into place."He was severely injured in the fire, but he managed to escape. And if I'm not mistaken, it was that village doctor who saved him!"I scanned the crowd, pressing on."He was an orphan. No one would have cared much about his death. So when the burned-out car was found, everyone naturally assumed he died inside. No one questioned it.""The village doctor was highly skilled. He must have performed extensive skin grafts to treat his burns–completely altering his appearance.""And b
