Chapter 2

Author: Growing Grass
Over the phone, Dad asked, "What? Holly was shot in the library?"

As soon as Dad hung up, he turned to me and said, "Your sister got hurt in the library. Mr. Shaffer said we need to get to the hospital right away."

Feigning ignorance, I followed Dad out the door. He sped all the way to Droveford Hospital. That place couldn't have been more familiar to me.

Mom was the hospital's star neurosurgeon, the best there was. Before long, everyone was gathered outside the operating room.

My grandparents from both sides were all there. My maternal grandmother, whom I call Granny, was wiping her tears.

She pointed an accusatory finger at me, choking out, "How do you have the nerve to show your face here? Where were you when something like this happened to Holly?"

Gramps, my maternal grandfather, didn't say a single word, but the look he gave me was filled with disappointment and condemnation.

My paternal grandparents, Grandpa and Grandma, were staring at me with the same look of disapproval. As Grandpa steadied Grandma, he yelled, "Yeah! Why didn't you go to the library with Holly? It's dangerous for her to be out alone!"

Dad stood off to the side, his expression making it clear that he blamed me, too. I felt like a target, pierced by countless arrows.

In this life, I chose to stay out of it, yet I still ended up as the scapegoat. As expected, no matter what I did, I could never do right by them.

Keeping my head down, I quietly defended myself, "I didn't know something would happen to Holly. Should I get Mom? She's working late anyway…"

The moment I mentioned Mom, a look of panic crossed Dad's gaze. He quickly grabbed my arm. "Your mom is busy. Don't bother her."

Right. She was busy flying out to Harrewville to buy a platinum bracelet for Trevor, after all.

It was only at this moment in my past life that I learned that Mom had taken time off work to go to Harrewville with Trevor.

Everyone knew that she wasn't in the city, but they'd all kept it from me. Grandma shot Dad a disapproving look. "What could be more important than Holly's surgery? Call Mary right now! Tell her to get here immediately!"

"Yes, exactly!"

Granny chimed in, "Nothing could be more important than this. Call her!"

Putting on an anxious act, I took out my phone and called Mom. I tried more than a dozen times, but no one answered.

"What is Mary Holden doing? How can she refuse to answer her phone at a time like this?"

Grandma was even more frantic now, her frustration with Mom obvious in her voice.

Dad quickly tried to smooth things over. "Mom, she's probably performing a surgery. You know how she is—once she's in the OR, she tunes everything out."

But the second the words left his mouth, the call connected. "Didn't I tell you not to bother me for no reason? Are you out of your mind, Norman Keller? Do you have any idea how busy I am?"

Tightening my grip around my phone, I spoke timidly. "Mom, Holly's been shot. She's at your hospital. Please come—"

Before I could even finish, she cut me off with a scoff. "Ha! Shot? Don't go wishing bad things on Holly! Holly is perfectly fine at the library studying for her exams. How could she possibly have been shot?

"If she ends up doing badly on her exams, it'll be because you jinxed her!"

She didn't believe me at all. Her response was the same as it had been in my previous life.

"Mom, it's true! Holly really was shot! She's right outside the operating room at your hospital! She was bleeding so much—"

"It's true, Mary! Please hurry over!" Granny shouted desperately into my phone.

Mom's voice instantly turned cold, her irritation unmistakable. "Mom, Norman's just talking nonsense. Why are you going along with him? Whatever. I don't have time for this nonsense. I'm busy with work. I'm hanging up now."

She then hung up without saying another word.

Grandma clutched her chest, her voice shaking. "What could be more important than Holly's life? She's lost her mind!"

Dad tried to defend Mom, "Mary might really have something incredibly important going on…"

Just then, a nurse rushed out of the operating room, looking frantic. "Are you Dr. Holden's family? You need to get her here right now! The patient has a severe brain hemorrhage.

"Her condition is critical, and Dr. Holden's the only one who can perform this surgery! She took the day off today, so she isn't in the hospital right now."

  • Murdered for Saving My Sister   Chapter 10

It turned out that Trevor was the one who planned Holly's murder from start to finish.Gilbert and Trevor were willing to do anything to get their hands on the Keller family's fortune, including killing Holly. As for the gun, Gilbert had bought it from a hunter in his village. And I was supposed to be their next target.Back then, to get Trevor into the Keller family, Gilbert pretended to save Holly and used the opportunity to have his own wife killed. He then faked his own death. What was even more shocking was that Mom had known about that plan the whole time. But she went along with it just because she wanted to rekindle her relationship with Gilbert.Down at the detention center, Trevor gripped the iron bars, bawling his eyes out. "Mom, save me! I don't want to go to prison!"Mom's eyes were red, and her voice was hoarse as she questioned, "Why? Why would you kill my daughter? Haven't I treated you well enough?"When Trevor realized that Mom wasn't going to help him, his face

Mom was shaking with rage. She raised a trembling finger at me, her chest heaving violently. "You! You ungrateful brat! I'm your mother! How dare you talk to me like that!"Fine then! Norman Keller, I'll make this clear right now, with your grandmother as my witness. You're no longer a son of mine! You can leave! Don't ever come back to our home again! And I'll pretend I never had you!"I looked at her coldly. Instead of a hurt expression, I flashed her a smile of utter relief. This was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't have asked for anything better. "Great. I'd love nothing more than to cut ties!"My immediate agreement clearly caught Mom off guard. She was suddenly at a loss for words, her face turning bright red.Trevor immediately took the chance to throw himself into Mom's arms, sniffling. "Mom, please don't do this… Norman's just saying things in the heat of the moment… And you still have me…"Mom hugged Trevor tightly. "That's right! I still have you! Trevor, sweetie, tha

The man lunged to grab me. I struggled with everything I had, but I was absolutely no match for him.He started dragging me toward a van, cursing at me the entire time. "I was actually going to deal with you much later. You only have yourself to blame for being so unlucky!""Let me go! Get away from me!"I kicked and thrashed with every ounce of strength I had as I dug my nails into the back of his hand."You want to do this the hard way, huh? I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget!"He jerked me forward with even more force.Just as I was about to be dragged into the van, a familiar figure suddenly appeared out of nowhere."Stop right there! What do you think you're doing?"It was Dad!He charged at the masked man without a second thought, and the two of them started brawling."Dad!" I cried out in shock.Ignoring the pain I was feeling, I scrambled to my feet to help him.Even though Dad had a big stick with him, the other guy was clearly much more agile than

Mom snatched the photo and threw it at me with all her strength. "If Trevor hadn't suggested checking the surveillance footage to find out how Holly died, I never would've learned just how sick and twisted you are!"As I looked straight into her cold eyes, I was suddenly filled with uncontrollable anger. "Am I really your biological son?"Mom's expression shifted, and a look of panic crossed her face. "W-What are you talking about?"I let out a laugh. "If I really were your son, how could you bear to treat me like this? My whole life, you've only cared about Trevor. And now you're trying to pin Holly's death on me, too?"What, am I the one who shot her?"Mom glared at me and pressed her lips into a tight line. After a few seconds, she finally spoke. "Yeah, I did give birth to you. But why did I have to give birth to someone like you?"While pointing at me, she screamed at the top of her lungs, "You've been jealous of your younger brother ever since you were a child! And you even

Mom said, "No, Marvin, listen to me. Let me explain! It's not what you think. It's because Trevor's parents…"Panic was written all over her face. Her lips trembled as she desperately tried to defend herself. With a cold scoff, Dad pulled out a photo from his pocket and threw it at Mom's face.In the photo, a younger version of her was in a tight embrace with Trevor's father, both of them wearing bright smiles.Mom looked like she'd been struck by lightning right then. Her whole body went still. She had gone to great lengths to hide this photo in the safest, most hidden spot. How could anyone have found it?I sneered inwardly. Naturally, I was the one who had anonymously mailed it to Dad, along with the old love letters that Mom and Trevor's father had secretly exchanged years ago, which I'd found. In my past life, I had known for a long time that Mom never got over her first love after getting married. She would even meet him in secret from time to time, sometimes taking me with

Pointing at the death certificate, Granny screamed in despair, "Your daughter is dead because of you, Mary Holden! Because of your selfishness! Because of your stupidity!"Mom's hands trembled as she picked up the flimsy piece of paper. She stared at it so hard that it was as if she wanted to burn a hole through it.Trevor was clearly terrified by the sudden, tense atmosphere. He quietly backed away, trying to make himself as small and invisible as possible.Dad looked at her coldly. "I want a divorce, Mary."Mom snapped her head up. "No! I'm not agreeing to a divorce! It's my fault that Holly is gone, but I really didn't know it was this serious! I thought Norman was lying again!"Clutching the death certificate, Mom wailed hysterically as she begged, "Marvin, please forgive me this once. Just this once, okay? I swear I'll never make the same mistake again!""Forgive you? Mary, how am I supposed to forgive you?"Dad's voice shot up, filled with all the anger and disappointment
