As that vivid red color filled my vision, I stood frozen at the library entrance for a moment.

It reminded me of the blood that had pooled beneath the back of my head when Mom shoved me down the stairs in my past life.

Countless memories flashed through my mind in rapid succession—the chaos in the hospital corridor, Mom's cold gaze, Dad's furious roar, and the terrifying sensation of free-falling.

I spun on my heel, taking off in the opposite direction as if my life depended on it.

I flagged down a cab and practically scrambled inside. Even after settling into the back seat, I still couldn't stop trembling.

Trevor Keller's parents had died saving my sister, Holly Keller, during an earthquake, leaving him an orphan.

Feeling indebted to his family, my parents welcomed Trevor into our home.

From then on, Trevor became the golden child of my family, while I was reduced to an eyesore who didn't belong. Even Holly, who had always doted on me, gave all her affection to Trevor instead.

And no matter what I did or said, I could do no right in their eyes.

In my past life, I desperately tried to explain that I was just trying to save Holly, that Mom had gotten it all wrong. Alas, they wouldn't believe a single word of it.

They even believed that Holly getting shot was part of some sick, elaborate plot orchestrated by me.

As ridiculous as it sounded, they believed it without question. So this time, I was going to mind my own business.

After all, Holly did nothing even though she knew Trevor had people bully me at school. She even had the nerve to tell me to look in the mirror and ask myself if my horrible personality was the reason I was targeted.

The moment I entered the house, I heard Dad talking to himself, his voice full of excitement.

"Man, these shrimp are huge. Trevor's going to love these. I should whip up some hearty pot roast when he gets home. He's lost a lot of weight lately and needs the protein."

It wasn't until I reached the dining room doorway that Dad finally noticed me. His smile vanished in an instant, replaced by a stern glare.

"Norman, why did it take you so long to buy the crabs that I asked for? Do you have any idea what time it is? Where the hell have you been? If the crabs aren't fresh anymore, we're going to end up with food poisoning! Do you have any sense of priorities at all?"

Dad laid into me right off the bat. I just stood there in the doorway, still holding the bag of crabs. It felt incredibly heavy in my hand.

Lowering my head, I muttered, "There was traffic…"

"Traffic? You're telling me you're the only person in this city who got stuck in traffic? And honestly, you're way too sensitive.

"The moment you get the slightest criticism, you clam up. You're nowhere near as sensible and considerate as Trevor."

Ever since Trevor came to live with us, I had been hearing things like that nonstop.

Every action I took and every emotion I expressed were weighed against Trevor. And the verdict was always that I fell short.

I glanced up at Dad. The look of disappointment on his face was impossible to miss.

I tightened my grip on the bag, my nails digging so deeply into my palms that it hurt. Suddenly, a sharp ringtone cut through the air. It was Dad's phone, which was on the cutting board.

"Hello? Oh, Mr. Shaffer! Yes, hello…"

He spoke in a casual tone, clearly expecting the teacher to be asking for Trevor.

It turned out that Trevor was the one who planned Holly's murder from start to finish.Gilbert and Trevor were willing to do anything to get their hands on the Keller family's fortune, including killing Holly. As for the gun, Gilbert had bought it from a hunter in his village. And I was supposed to be their next target.Back then, to get Trevor into the Keller family, Gilbert pretended to save Holly and used the opportunity to have his own wife killed. He then faked his own death. What was even more shocking was that Mom had known about that plan the whole time. But she went along with it just because she wanted to rekindle her relationship with Gilbert.Down at the detention center, Trevor gripped the iron bars, bawling his eyes out. "Mom, save me! I don't want to go to prison!"Mom's eyes were red, and her voice was hoarse as she questioned, "Why? Why would you kill my daughter? Haven't I treated you well enough?"When Trevor realized that Mom wasn't going to help him, his face

Mom was shaking with rage. She raised a trembling finger at me, her chest heaving violently. "You! You ungrateful brat! I'm your mother! How dare you talk to me like that!"Fine then! Norman Keller, I'll make this clear right now, with your grandmother as my witness. You're no longer a son of mine! You can leave! Don't ever come back to our home again! And I'll pretend I never had you!"I looked at her coldly. Instead of a hurt expression, I flashed her a smile of utter relief. This was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't have asked for anything better. "Great. I'd love nothing more than to cut ties!"My immediate agreement clearly caught Mom off guard. She was suddenly at a loss for words, her face turning bright red.Trevor immediately took the chance to throw himself into Mom's arms, sniffling. "Mom, please don't do this… Norman's just saying things in the heat of the moment… And you still have me…"Mom hugged Trevor tightly. "That's right! I still have you! Trevor, sweetie, tha

The man lunged to grab me. I struggled with everything I had, but I was absolutely no match for him.He started dragging me toward a van, cursing at me the entire time. "I was actually going to deal with you much later. You only have yourself to blame for being so unlucky!""Let me go! Get away from me!"I kicked and thrashed with every ounce of strength I had as I dug my nails into the back of his hand."You want to do this the hard way, huh? I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget!"He jerked me forward with even more force.Just as I was about to be dragged into the van, a familiar figure suddenly appeared out of nowhere."Stop right there! What do you think you're doing?"It was Dad!He charged at the masked man without a second thought, and the two of them started brawling."Dad!" I cried out in shock.Ignoring the pain I was feeling, I scrambled to my feet to help him.Even though Dad had a big stick with him, the other guy was clearly much more agile than

Mom snatched the photo and threw it at me with all her strength. "If Trevor hadn't suggested checking the surveillance footage to find out how Holly died, I never would've learned just how sick and twisted you are!"As I looked straight into her cold eyes, I was suddenly filled with uncontrollable anger. "Am I really your biological son?"Mom's expression shifted, and a look of panic crossed her face. "W-What are you talking about?"I let out a laugh. "If I really were your son, how could you bear to treat me like this? My whole life, you've only cared about Trevor. And now you're trying to pin Holly's death on me, too?"What, am I the one who shot her?"Mom glared at me and pressed her lips into a tight line. After a few seconds, she finally spoke. "Yeah, I did give birth to you. But why did I have to give birth to someone like you?"While pointing at me, she screamed at the top of her lungs, "You've been jealous of your younger brother ever since you were a child! And you even

Mom said, "No, Marvin, listen to me. Let me explain! It's not what you think. It's because Trevor's parents…"Panic was written all over her face. Her lips trembled as she desperately tried to defend herself. With a cold scoff, Dad pulled out a photo from his pocket and threw it at Mom's face.In the photo, a younger version of her was in a tight embrace with Trevor's father, both of them wearing bright smiles.Mom looked like she'd been struck by lightning right then. Her whole body went still. She had gone to great lengths to hide this photo in the safest, most hidden spot. How could anyone have found it?I sneered inwardly. Naturally, I was the one who had anonymously mailed it to Dad, along with the old love letters that Mom and Trevor's father had secretly exchanged years ago, which I'd found. In my past life, I had known for a long time that Mom never got over her first love after getting married. She would even meet him in secret from time to time, sometimes taking me with

Pointing at the death certificate, Granny screamed in despair, "Your daughter is dead because of you, Mary Holden! Because of your selfishness! Because of your stupidity!"Mom's hands trembled as she picked up the flimsy piece of paper. She stared at it so hard that it was as if she wanted to burn a hole through it.Trevor was clearly terrified by the sudden, tense atmosphere. He quietly backed away, trying to make himself as small and invisible as possible.Dad looked at her coldly. "I want a divorce, Mary."Mom snapped her head up. "No! I'm not agreeing to a divorce! It's my fault that Holly is gone, but I really didn't know it was this serious! I thought Norman was lying again!"Clutching the death certificate, Mom wailed hysterically as she begged, "Marvin, please forgive me this once. Just this once, okay? I swear I'll never make the same mistake again!""Forgive you? Mary, how am I supposed to forgive you?"Dad's voice shot up, filled with all the anger and disappointment
