Chapter 1

I laid my phone face down on the desk.

Every single pair of eyes in the packed conference room remained pinned on me like needles.

"I've been single my entire life," I said, keeping my voice steady, "That photo is photoshopped."

Zoe’s eyes were still red with tears. However, her hands moved as fast as lightning as she whipped out her phone.

She marched over and thrust her screen right in front of Audrey.

"Look, Mrs. Mitchell," Zoe said, her voice shaking, "Look at what he posted on Instagram last Valentine's Day."

It was a picture of "Harper." Long dark hair, soft side profile, a tiny, subtle curve at the corner of her lips.

The caption read: [Year three with Harper.]

Zoe’s thumb flew across her screen, scrolling through post after post.

"Here's New Year's Eve," Zoe rattled off, "Here's her birthday last month. During the company retreat last fall, he insisted he had to hurry home because his girlfriend was waiting for him. Last year’s New Year’s Eve, he said he’d be counting down with his girlfriend."

She swiped through post after post.

Every single post had come from my account. Every single picture was the digital avatar I had built for Harper.

With every flick of Zoe's thumb, Audrey’s face turned another shade paler, her eyes grew colder.

She pushed the phone back toward Zoe and locked her gaze onto me.

She said coldly, "Dylan, you just said you've been single your whole life. So, who’s Harper? A ghost?"

My fingers clamped tight around the edge of my laptop keyboard.

"The girl in that photo isn't Harper," I said.

"If it's not Harper, then who is it?" Zoe cut in. Her voice quivered with dramatic restraint.

"Dylan, I heard you in the break room last month with my own ears. The director spot was open, and you said if your girlfriend could just get close to Mr. Mitchell, that promotion would be yours."

She bit her lower lip hard.

"I kept quiet for you back then," she continued, tears brimming, "I thought you were just having a temporary lapse in judgment."

"What day?" I asked bluntly, "What time?"

Zoe blinked, taken aback.

"You claimed you heard me in the break room," I said, staring straight into her eyes, "Tell me the exact day and time. There's a security camera right outside the break room, and my keycard logs every time I enter the server room. Name the time, and we can pull the footage right now."

Zoe's lips trembled. Her eyes filled with fresh tears that hovered right on the edge of her lashes, refusing to fall.

"Dylan, how can you do this?" Her voice cracked, sounding like she was choking back tears. "I respected you so much. You messed up, and I tried to protect you, but now you're turning this around and attacking me?"

She spun away from me, turning toward Audrey, her voice breaking between sobs.

"Mrs. Mitchell, I swear I'm telling the truth. He's my mentor, and I wanted so badly for this to be fake. But every single word I heard in that break room was real."

Audrey didn't even glance at Zoe. Instead, she tapped her phone screen and hit play on an audio recording.

A female voice echoed through the silent conference room. It was soft and smooth, with a faint slur of alcohol.

“Mr. Mitchell, thank you so much for driving me back tonight. Do you want to come up for a drink?”

Then came Benjamin's voice, solemn and righteous: “Harper, you've had too much to drink. I'll have the front desk send up some tea to sober you up.”

“What about your wife?”

“I’m a married man. From now on, let's keep things strictly professional.”

The recording cut off with a sharp snap.

Audrey slowly lifted her eyes to mine.

She asked, "Now, how do you explain this recording?"

I opened my mouth to respond, but the words froze halfway up my throat.

That voice was soft, with a subtle upward lilting inflection at the end of each sentence.

I knew that voice.

It wasn't Harper’s synthetic voice model. I had coded and tuned Harper's speech parameters line by line, octave by octave. I knew every single syllable of her generated tone like the back of my hand.

This voice on the recording wasn't generated by an algorithm. It was produced by real human vocal cords, carrying real human breath.

I had definitely heard it before.

Hate as long as you want. I'm right here with you.]Three months later, we launched a new app. We called it Homeward.Built on Harper's emotional interaction engine, it was an AI designed specifically for senior companionship. It was a simple web app with no learning curve. You’d just open it, and it was ready to chat.In the first week, we hit ten thousand users. Audrey projected the live analytics onto the office's main display. Every time the number jumped by another thousand, she took a screenshot. In the second week, we hit a hundred thousand users. When the head of legal hung up, the second email from the industry association popped up right on schedule.[Subject: Official Disciplinary Committee Resolution. Permanent Revocation.]That same afternoon, Mr. Blake called Benjamin directly."Mr. Mitchell, you told me halting operations was only temporary. Now CoreTech brought in a new supplier. We just lost the whole account!""That's not my problem.""How is it not your problem? You were the one who told me to send that email!"Benjamin hung up.Five minutes later, Mr. Blake posted a public update. He didn't explicitly name names. He just attached a screenshot of an email sent directly from Benjamin. The body text was a draft template for halting operations, complete with the exact timestamp. He had instructed the supplier to send it the day before the major distribution contract was scheduled to be signed.Underneath the screenshot, he wrote the caption: [I had no idea I was raising a snake.]The post was instantly screen

Audrey raised her eyes and looked at me."Let’s launch it directly to the market," I said, pointing to the blank space on the right side of the whiteboard, "A web app. Zero barrier to entry. Our users are our distribution channel. Let them take a look at the data before deciding whose side they want to be on."The corner of Audrey’s mouth twitched into a subtle smile. She wrote three words on the right side: “Direct-to-Consumer.”"The third problem," she said, "The industry association's data compliance investigation.""We lay out all of Harper's training data from the past three years including compliance logs, data sources, and privacy protection protocols, out in the open. We run our own internal audit first, then hand everything over to the investigative panel directly.""Voluntary disclosure.""Exactly. Zoe posted about deepfakes on a global tech forum, so we give the investigation team a complete compliance white paper."Underneath "Direct-to-Consumer," Audrey added anothe

It was never her.The social media timestamps proved Harper had existed three years ago.Zoe didn't start stepping into the CEO’s office until last November. The final slide was a clip of Zoe in the all-hands meeting, reciting that line right alongside the recording. Audrey turned off the audio recording and stood up."Zoe, you're fired. Effective immediately. Pack your things today. I’ll make sure the official reason is clearly documented on your separation paperwork."Zoe's knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself. Then, Audrey turned to Benjamin."Benjamin, the divorce papers."She pulled two documents from her bag and laid them flat on the table. One divorce agreement. One equity transfer form."Sign them. You walk away with nothing. Every single share of company stock in your name transfers to me."Benjamin stared at the two sheets of paper. His hand hovered above them, trembling uncontrollably."You… You can't!""I can. You cheated. You embezzled company funds to pay for hotel rooms. You fabricated evidence to frame an employee. Zoe backed away until her back hit the wall with a hollow thud."You came to me," she said, "You said your wife was tracking you. You said you needed a scapegoat. You said Dylan’s girlfriend never came around, so she was the perfect one.""You’re insane," Benjamin roared, his voice spiking an octave, "You’re completely out of your mind. You were the one who said you hated Dylan. You said he was keeping you down. You said you wanted to climb the corporate ladder.""Climb the corporate ladder?" Zoe’s voice turned shrill.
