The cafeteria had emptied into whispers. Even hours later, people still looked at me differently, like I was keeping secrets bigger than I could hold. Maybe I was.

Jason walked me halfway back to the dorms before something urgent pulled him away. Alex had hovered, clearly restless, but in the end he followed Jason too. Which left me… here. Alone.

Except not really.

Because I felt him before I saw him.

Ethan.

The way the air shifted when he walked into a space was impossible to ignore. He carried himself like he owned the floor, like gravity bent its knees for him. And it made people look—especially girls. Some giggled, others whispered. I wanted to roll my eyes, but the truth was… my chest tightened in a way I hated admitting.

He leaned against the railing outside the dorm building, waiting. For me.

“You walk faster than you used to,” he said as I approached, voice warm and teasing. “Guess Jason’s been training you.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Guess you’re still good at showing up where you

It wasn’t often that I found myself studying my own twin like he was a stranger. But that’s exactly what I was doing.Ethan had waltzed back into my life like no time had passed at all, carrying his trademark smirk, the lazy tilt of his shoulders, the careless playboy charm. To everyone else, he looked untouchable, unpredictable, dangerous even.To me? He looked like my brother. The boy who once snuck me extra candy after dinner, who teased me endlessly but never let anyone else hurt me.Except now, I wasn’t sure if the person standing in front of me was still that boy — or someone I didn’t fully recognize.I watched him at the cafeteria table the next day, leaning back in his chair, tossing out one-liners that sent whispers rippling through the room. He had a way of commanding attention without trying, like he’d been born to disrupt. And of course, he set his sights on Lila.I saw Jason stiffen across the table, his jaw clenched so tightly I half-expected his teeth to crack. Alex’s e

The rooftop air was cool, almost too cool, brushing against my skin and making me hug my arms. But it wasn’t the breeze that had me tense. It was the way Ethan leaned against the railing, smirking like the world was his stage, while Jason stood across from him, ready to explode.I felt stuck between them — two storms circling the same sky, and me caught in the eye.Ethan was the kind of person who could walk into any space and tilt the balance without saying a word. That night, he’d done more than tilt it; he’d cracked it wide open. His grin was lazy, his tone dripping with mockery, but his eyes… his eyes didn’t match.Jason only saw the grin.“Relax,” Ethan had drawled. “We’re just catching up. Childhood friends and all that. Nothing dangerous.”The words burned. Not because of what he said, but because of the way Jason reacted. His shoulders tightened, his jaw clenched, his whole body screamed possession. And something inside me twisted — because Jason’s jealousy wasn’t ugly. It was

People always bought the act.The smirk, the lazy drawl, the way I strolled into any room like it belonged to me — it always threw them off. They never looked closer, never questioned whether I was hiding something sharper underneath.Tonight wasn’t any different. The rooftop had been calm, the stars scattered like glitter across black velvet. Lila was laughing at one of Ava’s sarcastic remarks, her shoulders finally loose, her guard down for once. I leaned back against the railing, pretending I didn’t notice how at ease she was around me. Pretending it didn’t matter.Because it didn’t.Not anymore.Once upon a time, I’d thought maybe I could have been more to her. But I’d left. I’d chosen silence and distance when she probably needed me most. Whatever fragile chance I’d had with her ended the moment I walked away. Now? I wasn’t here to win her heart.I was here to make sure she — and Ava — didn’t get torn apart by the chaos circling them. And if that meant stepping into the role of t

I’d always thought I could handle anything. The fights, the threats, the late-night battles that clawed at my sanity — those were familiar enemies. I knew how to face them, fists ready, jaw set.But watching Lila laugh beside Ethan under the rooftop glow? That was a different kind of battle. One I wasn’t sure I could win. From below, I’d spotted them first — three silhouettes sitting close, their voices carrying faintly through the night air. I recognized Ava’s sharp tone, Lila’s soft laugh, and Ethan’s deep voice, smooth and too damn easy.I clenched my fists. He was leaning just a little too close to her. Smiling in that carefree, charming way that made girls’ defenses crumble. And Lila — she wasn’t pushing him away. She wasn’t stiff or uncomfortable. She looked… at ease. Comfortable.Something twisted in my chest.I didn’t like it.Not one bit.I climbed the last set of stairs and stepped onto the rooftop. The laughter cut off almost instantly. Ava stiffened, eyes darting between m

Relief. That was the word I hadn’t felt in years. It hit me like fresh air after drowning too long under water. For the first time since I walked back into their lives, the tension wasn’t pressing on my chest. No more hiding behind grins that didn’t always reach my eyes. No more dodging questions with careless jokes. Ava knew. Lila knew. The secret I carried — the reason I left, the reason I stayed gone — was finally out in the open. And instead of anger pushing me away, they stayed. The next morning, I found Ava in the courtyard, sitting on one of the stone benches with her arms wrapped around her knees. She looked up when she heard my footsteps. For a heartbeat, her face was unreadable. Then she sighed and shoved at me as I dropped onto the bench beside her.“You’re still annoying,” she muttered.A grin tugged at my lips. “And you’re still short. Some things never change.”She shot me a glare but it was soft around the edges, lacking the sharpness it used to carry. For once, I didn’

When I stepped into the dorm room, Ethan was already there, lounging on my desk chair like he owned the place. Typical.“You’re late,” he teased, that same cocky grin tugging at his lips. “What kept you? Sneaking around with your little love triangle crew?”I glared at him, tossing my bag onto the bed. “Don’t start.”“Start what?” He leaned back, arms behind his head. “I’m just asking. Jason, Alex… hard to keep up, sis.”I crossed my arms. “Don’t do that. Don’t joke your way out of this. You left. For years. Without a word. You think you can just show up and pretend nothing happened?”The grin slipped for half a second before he forced it back. “I told you. I’m back now. That’s what matters.”“No.” My voice cracked despite the anger in it. “What matters is why you left. You think I didn’t notice? You think I didn’t feel like I’d lost half of myself? You were my twin, Ethan. And then you just… disappeared. Why?”His smile finally dropped. Completely. He looked at me then — really looke
