I’ve been called a lot of things—cocky, reckless, loud, obnoxious.

But never scared.

Until now.

Because Lila’s text sat on my phone like a ticking bomb: We need to talk.

I read it once. Twice. Ten times. And every single time, my chest got tighter.

That phrase is never good. Never. It’s what people say before they dump you, before they break your heart, before they tell you something you don’t want to hear.

And the fact that it was from her? Yeah, I’d take a punch to the face over this any day.

I paced my room, running a hand through my hair for the hundredth time. My reflection in the mirror looked back at me, messy and restless, and for once I didn’t recognize the guy.

This wasn’t the Jason Cole everyone knew—the guy who never cared too much, who laughed off anything serious, who always had another joke locked and loaded.

This was a guy who was terrified of losing someone.

Her.

All day at school, I’d felt it. The way she’d been quieter, distracted. The way she avoided meeting my eye

I’d always thought I could handle anything. The fights, the threats, the late-night battles that clawed at my sanity — those were familiar enemies. I knew how to face them, fists ready, jaw set.But watching Lila laugh beside Ethan under the rooftop glow? That was a different kind of battle. One I wasn’t sure I could win. From below, I’d spotted them first — three silhouettes sitting close, their voices carrying faintly through the night air. I recognized Ava’s sharp tone, Lila’s soft laugh, and Ethan’s deep voice, smooth and too damn easy.I clenched my fists. He was leaning just a little too close to her. Smiling in that carefree, charming way that made girls’ defenses crumble. And Lila — she wasn’t pushing him away. She wasn’t stiff or uncomfortable. She looked… at ease. Comfortable.Something twisted in my chest.I didn’t like it.Not one bit.I climbed the last set of stairs and stepped onto the rooftop. The laughter cut off almost instantly. Ava stiffened, eyes darting between m

Relief. That was the word I hadn’t felt in years. It hit me like fresh air after drowning too long under water. For the first time since I walked back into their lives, the tension wasn’t pressing on my chest. No more hiding behind grins that didn’t always reach my eyes. No more dodging questions with careless jokes. Ava knew. Lila knew. The secret I carried — the reason I left, the reason I stayed gone — was finally out in the open. And instead of anger pushing me away, they stayed. The next morning, I found Ava in the courtyard, sitting on one of the stone benches with her arms wrapped around her knees. She looked up when she heard my footsteps. For a heartbeat, her face was unreadable. Then she sighed and shoved at me as I dropped onto the bench beside her.“You’re still annoying,” she muttered.A grin tugged at my lips. “And you’re still short. Some things never change.”She shot me a glare but it was soft around the edges, lacking the sharpness it used to carry. For once, I didn’

When I stepped into the dorm room, Ethan was already there, lounging on my desk chair like he owned the place. Typical.“You’re late,” he teased, that same cocky grin tugging at his lips. “What kept you? Sneaking around with your little love triangle crew?”I glared at him, tossing my bag onto the bed. “Don’t start.”“Start what?” He leaned back, arms behind his head. “I’m just asking. Jason, Alex… hard to keep up, sis.”I crossed my arms. “Don’t do that. Don’t joke your way out of this. You left. For years. Without a word. You think you can just show up and pretend nothing happened?”The grin slipped for half a second before he forced it back. “I told you. I’m back now. That’s what matters.”“No.” My voice cracked despite the anger in it. “What matters is why you left. You think I didn’t notice? You think I didn’t feel like I’d lost half of myself? You were my twin, Ethan. And then you just… disappeared. Why?”His smile finally dropped. Completely. He looked at me then — really looke

When I pushed open the dorm room door, I didn’t expect to find him sitting there in the dark.Ethan.Legs stretched out, arms crossed, his head tilted back against the wall like he’d been waiting for me. The faint glow from the hallway framed his face in shadows, but I knew that smirk. That mask.“You’re late,” he drawled. “What kept you? A date with Alex? Jason? Or both?”My hand tightened on the doorknob. Same old Ethan. Deflect with a joke. Hide behind charm. Act untouchable. But I wasn’t twelve anymore. I wasn’t the little sister he could tease until I forgot why I was mad.Not this time.I closed the door, my voice colder than the air between us. “Cut the act, Ethan. Why are you here?”For the first time since his dramatic entrance at the cafeteria, his smirk faltered. Barely. But I saw it.He shifted, leaning forward, elbows braced on his knees. “I told you. I’m back. Simple as that.”“No.” I took a step closer, refusing to let him dodge me. “You left without a word. Years, Etha

Walking away from Alex, I couldn’t help but grin. On the surface, it probably looked cocky, like I’d just won some invisible game. But in truth, I wasn’t celebrating anything.Alex wasn’t fooled by the grin I wore like armor. He’d seen past it—enough to know I was dangerous, even if he didn’t know why yet.And that was fine. I wanted him to suspect me.Because suspicion kept people on edge. And people on edge made mistakes.Mistakes that I could use.I strolled down the hallway like I owned it, hands deep in my pockets, ignoring the glances and whispers that followed me. Let them talk. Let them guess. Half the fun was in letting them build the legend before I even had to lift a finger. But behind the performance, my mind was anything but relaxed.Lila.She’d looked at me earlier like she wasn’t sure whether to hug me or strangle me. Fair. I had vanished without warning years ago, left her—and Ava—without so much as a note. And now I was back, sliding into the cafeteria with a smirk an

I’ve seen storms before. The kind that brew quietly on the horizon, unnoticed until they’re right on top of you. Jason was exactly that kind of storm right now—restless, reckless, and ready to tear apart anything in his way.And at the center of it all? Ethan. The cafeteria incident was still the talk of the school. Whispers carried faster than wildfire. Who was the new guy? Where did he come from? Why did he act like he owned the place? I listened, but I didn’t join in. People wasted too much energy chasing rumors when the truth was usually simpler—and a lot more dangerous.Jason wasn’t taking it well. He hadn’t said much since storming out earlier, but I didn’t need words to know what was gnawing at him. His fists spoke loud enough. His jaw spoke louder. And I understood.Lila.She was always going to be the fulcrum, the one everyone orbited around. She never asked for it, but it didn’t change the fact that wherever she stood, the ground cracked and pulled others in.I leaned back a
