Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

As I passed Marielle, I stopped. She instinctively shrank closer to Caspian, refusing to meet my eyes.

I studied her delicate, wounded expression and found the whole performance almost laughable.

"Since the four of you are so fond of teaching people lessons…" I turned to Evander, my voice as casual as if I were discussing the weather. "Be at the office at 9:00 am tomorrow. You'll hand over every project you're currently managing.

"Then, we'll see how much authority you have left once the Vale family stops handing it to you."

I didn't spare their darkening expressions another glance. With my arm around Adeline, I walked straight out of the bathroom.

We had barely made it down the hall when Zet's dismissive voice drifted after us. "Forget it, Evander. She's bluffing. Give her three days. She'll be begging us to come back and clean up the mess."

My heels struck the polished marble floor in crisp, steady beats as Adeline and I walked away.

...

Adeline spent the entire ride home curled into the corner of the back seat. Her fingers were wrapped tightly around the edge of my coat, clinging to it like a frightened animal.

"Mom, I didn't bully her." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Marielle came up to me and asked to borrow the designer gown I'm wearing to my coming-of-age ceremony next month. I told her I couldn't lend it out because it was made especially for the event.

"That's when she deliberately spilled her iced coffee all over my shoes. I didn't yell at her. I just told her she needed to be more careful. Then, Evander and the others showed up with those people."

I rubbed slow circles over her back, but the coldness settling inside me only deepened.

So, these were the four weapons I had chosen so carefully. I had spent ten years sharpening them. And now every blade was pointed at my own daughter.

Ten years ago, I walked into a foster home in Southmere and noticed four boys immediately. They were bruised and battered, but there was nothing defeated about them. Every one of them had a vicious spark in their eyes.

Evander was 12 years old back then. I'd watched him pick up a brick and take on a boy 17 years old over half a dinner roll.

Caspian was only eight years old, yet one bitter winter, he'd managed to lock a staff member who had been tormenting him inside an unheated storage shed.

Those were the boys I brought home.

On their first day at the Vale residence, I led them to the nursery and pointed to the baby sleeping peacefully in her crib.

"From this day forward, Adeline comes first. If anyone lays a hand on her, you protect her. No matter what."

Evander had been the first to kneel beside the crib. "You gave us a home, Mom. You gave us a future. If anyone ever hurts our sister, they'll have to go through us first."

I could still remember every word. And now, the four people hurting Adeline were the boys who had once sworn to protect her.

Early the next morning, I had the butler, Oliver Bane, cancel every supplementary credit card in their names. Then, I had all eight of their supercars removed from the garage.

A little later, Oliver came to me holding a stack of returned access cards, looking uncomfortable. "Ms. Vale, the boys moved into the lake house in Eastmere last night. Ms. Sloane went with them."

I took a sip of coffee.

He hesitated before continuing, "They also instructed the staff to clear out Ms. Adeline's private music room. Apparently, they want to turn it into a dressing room for Ms. Sloane."

My hand froze around the coffee cup. The lake house in Eastmere was supposed to be Adeline's 18th birthday present.

She had personally chosen everything inside, right down to the furniture and curtains. And her music room housed an antique cello she treasured more than anything else she owned.

It had belonged to her grandmother. It was the only thing Adeline had left of her.

"Bring the car around." I set my coffee down. "We're going to Eastmere."

By the time we pulled up outside the lake house, the front doors were wide open. A moving crew was carrying boxes out one after another.

I walked inside. The first thing I saw was Marielle lounging on the couch, eating a bowl of strawberries. She was wearing Adeline's favorite silk robe.

Evander sat beside her, reviewing a document on his laptop. At the sound of my heels against the floor, he looked up.

When he saw me, there wasn't even a flicker of guilt on his face. Instead, he gave me a mild smile.

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

"Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
