Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

Zet snapped the metal lighter shut with a click, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Mom, you can't seriously blame us for taking Marielle's side. Adeline thinks she can push everyone around just because our family is rich.

"If we don't put her in her place now, someone else will once she gets out into the real world. And they won't be nearly as nice about it."

Four adopted sons, and ten years of my life. I had spared no expense hiring the best tutors and mentors money could buy, teaching them how to think three moves ahead, how to command a room, and how to survive in a world where power mattered.

I had pulled them out of the foster care system and given them opportunities, connections, and a future most people could only dream of.

And this was what they'd done with everything I'd taught them. They had turned those very skills against Adeline and helped outsiders torment her.

I walked straight past Evander and crouched beside Adeline. She had bitten her lower lip so hard it had gone white. Tears streamed silently down her face.

"Mom…" Her voice was painfully hoarse. Both hands clutched what remained of her torn blouse, desperately holding the fabric together as if it were the last shred of dignity she had left.

I took off my cashmere coat and wrapped it securely around her. "It's over now."

I gently stroked her cold hair before pulling her into my arms.

Evander watched me, his frown deepening. "Mom, blindly taking Adeline's side no matter what she does isn't protecting her. You're going to ruin her."

He stepped forward and reached for her arm. "Adeline, get up and apologize to Marielle. Do that, and we'll let what happened today go."

I slapped Evander across the face. The crack echoed through the bathroom.

His head snapped to the side, and his glasses slipped from his face. They hit the tile with a sharp clatter, leaving one lens cracked.

Caspian's and Stellan's expressions changed instantly. "Mom! What are you doing?"

Caspian pushed Marielle behind him and rushed forward. "You're seriously hitting Evander over something this minor?"

Evander raised a hand, stopping him before he could come any closer. Slowly, he turned back toward me. A vivid red mark was already forming across his pale cheek.

Even then, he maintained that infuriating air of calm superiority. "Mom, if hitting me makes you feel better, then fine. I won't fight back.

"But my answer hasn't changed. Adeline needs to learn how to treat people with respect. Until she does, none of us will consider her our sister."

Still sheltered behind Caspian, Marielle gave his sleeve a timid tug. "Caspian, Ms. Vale is scaring me…"

Zet let out a derisive laugh, casually turning the lighter over between his fingers. "Mom, you've really disappointed us today. I always thought you were someone who could tell right from wrong.

"Turns out you're no different from every other parent who thinks their precious kid can do no wrong."

I looked coldly at the four arrogant faces in front of me and wondered if I had given them too much over the past ten years—so much that they'd forgotten exactly where they came from and who had given them everything they now took for granted.

"Your disappointment means absolutely nothing to me." I helped Adeline to her feet and kept one arm firmly around her as I faced them.

"You seem convinced Adeline throws her family's money around to get whatever she wants. Fine. Starting today, the four of you won't be spending another cent of the Vale family's money either."

Stellan gave a dismissive scoff. He folded his arms across his chest and looked away, openly contemptuous. "Mom, are you seriously threatening to freeze our accounts again?

"The four of us are running some of the most important divisions at Vale Group. Do you honestly think the company can function without us?"

Evander bent down and retrieved his glasses. Without any sign of urgency, he took out a handkerchief, wiped the dust from the cracked lenses, and put them back on.

"Mom, we've been at your side for ten years. Even if you don't think we've accomplished enough to deserve your appreciation, we've certainly earned some consideration for everything we've done. Are you sure you'd burn every bridge with us over Adeline?"

I tightened my arm around Adeline and headed for the door.

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Bella's POVOnce, the four Vale brothers had been celebrated as the Vale family's golden boys—powerful young executives who commanded attention wherever they went and seemed fiercely loyal to one another. Now, desperate to escape responsibility, they were turning on each other in the mud. Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

"Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
