Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

Less than five minutes later, more than a dozen security guards filed through the front door. They wasted no time on explanations. They went straight upstairs and started clearing out the rooms.

For the first time, Evander's carefully composed expression cracked. He shot to his feet. "Don't you dare touch anything!"

Not one of the guards even looked at him. They kept working, sweeping Caspian's watch cases, Stellan's laptop bag, and stacks of Marielle's newly purchased clothes into heavy-duty trash bags.

Evander moved to stop them. The head of security calmly pushed him aside with one arm, sending him stumbling back several steps.

Caspian's face darkened with fury. He pointed straight at me. "Mom, have you lost your mind? Adeline throws one spoiled-rich-girl tantrum, and you're kicking your own sons out of the house?"

"My sons?" I accepted a sanitizing wipe from Oliver and slowly cleaned my fingers. "Don't flatter yourselves."

The room went silent.

"I chose to call you my sons because I believed you'd earned a place in this family. You clearly mistook that privilege for something you were entitled to." I tossed the wipe aside. "So get out."

Outside, suitcases and shopping bags were already piling up near the front drive.

Marielle stared in horror as another bag was tossed out with the rest. "What are you doing? My new moisturizer is in there!"

She rushed toward it, but one of the guards nudged the bag out of the way before she could grab it. Marielle lunged after it, lost her balance, and landed awkwardly on the floor.

The lazy amusement finally disappeared from Zet's face. He stared at me, his jaw clenched. "Fine. You want to play hardball? Go ahead. But don't come begging us to return.

"Every major supplier on the Westmere development deals directly with the four of us. Without our signatures, next week's contractor payments don't go through.

"And when Vale Group misses those payments and gets buried in breach-of-contract claims, don't say we didn't warn you."

Stellan scoffed. "Mom, I think you've spent so long living comfortably that you've forgotten who's actually keeping Vale Group running. We'll leave if that's what you want. But when Vale stock crashes tomorrow, don't come crying to us for help."

The four of them stood on the lawn with Marielle, surrounded by the belongings that had just been thrown out of the house.

When they finally left, every one of them walked away with his head held high. Anyone watching might have thought they were leaving on their own terms instead of being thrown out of the family home.

I watched them disappear down the drive, then turned to Oliver. "Find out what those four have been doing behind my back."

…

The next morning, Adeline came into my study with red, swollen eyes. A letter was crumpled tightly in her hand, and tears splashed onto her knuckles. "Mom, they took my place in the competition away."

I took the letter from her. It was her finalist confirmation for the Global Young Entrepreneurs Challenge.

Adeline had spent six months preparing for it. There had been countless late nights, stacks of research, and draft after draft before she'd finally produced a business proposal she was proud of.

Now, her name had been crossed out in red ink. Written beside it was another name—Marielle Sloane.

"I went to the organizing committee." Adeline's voice broke as she struggled through the words. "They said an executive from Vale Group personally contacted them and requested that my finalist spot be transferred to Marielle."

Her fingers curled into fists. "Mom, I worked so hard for this… How can they just give it to someone else?"

How? Because as far as Evander was concerned, six months of Adeline's hard work meant nothing. One tear from Marielle, apparently, was worth more.

I took Adeline by the hand and told the driver to take us straight to Vale Group's headquarters.

I'd thrown all four of them out of the lake house, but apparently that hadn't humbled them in the slightest.

They were still sitting comfortably in the executive conference room as though the company belonged to them. When I pushed open the doors, I found all four gathered around Marielle.

And on the screen in front of them was Adeline's business proposal. They were helping Marielle rewrite it.

"Marielle, don't worry about understanding the numbers in this section," Evander said gently, pointing at the screen. "When you present, just read what's written on the slide."

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Bella's POVOnce, the four Vale brothers had been celebrated as the Vale family's golden boys—powerful young executives who commanded attention wherever they went and seemed fiercely loyal to one another. Now, desperate to escape responsibility, they were turning on each other in the mud. Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

"Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
