Chapter 6

Author: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

"Exactly," Caspian agreed. "The judges are going to give you favorable scores because you're backed by Vale Group anyway."

The conversation stopped the moment they noticed Adeline and me entering the room.

Evander calmly closed his laptop, picked up his coffee, and took a sip. "Mom, finally come to your senses? If you're here to discuss the Westmere development, Adeline needs to leave first. That project involves confidential company information."

I walked straight up to him and slapped the altered finalist letter onto the conference table. "Give Adeline her place back."

Evander glanced down at the letter and gave a quiet laugh. "I thought this was going to be something serious."

He leaned back. "Mom, Adeline is young. She'll have plenty of other opportunities. Marielle doesn't come from the kind of background we do. An achievement like this could make a real difference on her college applications."

Then, he looked at Adeline with the patronizing patience of an adult explaining something obvious to a child. "Adeline, you need to stop being so selfish.

"You've already been given more advantages than most people could ever dream of. What's wrong with letting Marielle have one opportunity?"

Adeline began trembling with anger, her nails digging into her palms. "It wasn't given to me! I earned it! I spent six months researching and writing that proposal. You stole my work and gave it to her!"

Stellan rose from his chair. "Watch what you're accusing us of, Adeline. No one stole anything. Vale Group sponsors the competition. We have discretion over which candidates receive the company's backing.

"As senior executives, we're perfectly entitled to direct those resources toward someone who needs the opportunity more than you do."

Zet burst out laughing and pointed at Adeline. "Come on, Adeline. Even if you compete with that proposal, everyone will assume your family handed you the whole thing. Marielle's different. She came from nothing and fought her way up. Judges love an underdog story."

Half-hidden behind Caspian, Marielle spoke in a small, hesitant voice, "Adeline, I'm sorry. If the competition really means that much to you, you can have the spot back. I just… I guess I'll have to give up on college."

Right on cue, tears spilled down her cheeks.

Caspian pulled her into his arms, then glared at Adeline. "Adeline, are you really going to destroy Marielle's future just to get your way?

"If you take that finalist spot back from her, I'll walk away from every Vale Group project I'm managing. Effective immediately."

The four of them surrounded Adeline like an impenetrable wall. In their twisted version of reality, Adeline fighting to keep something she'd earned through six months of hard work made her selfish. Marielle taking it from her was somehow justified because she had less.

I looked at Evander. His expression remained calm, almost gentle. He was certain I wouldn't touch them.

Not now. Not when the Westmere development was at such a critical stage, and he believed I needed the four of them to keep it under control.

"Fine." I nodded.

All four pairs of eyes turned toward me.

"You want the finalist spot? Keep it."

Adeline stared at me in disbelief. "Mom?"

I didn't look at her. My eyes remained fixed on Evander. "I just hope you're still this comfortable in those seats tomorrow."

Then, I took Adeline's hand, turned around, and walked out.

Behind us came Evander's quiet, confident laugh. "See, Mom? This would've been much easier if you'd been reasonable from the start."

The moment we were back in the car, Adeline finally broke down. I handed her a tissue and turned my gaze toward the window. "Adeline, remember exactly how they treated you today."

She looked at me through her tears.

"Because tomorrow, they're going to discover they don't have nearly as much power as they think."

Adeline wasn't ready to give up. I knew she'd secretly contacted the chair of the competition committee, hoping to convince them to let her resubmit her proposal under her own name.

I didn't stop her. Sometimes, no matter how much I wanted to protect her, there were truths she needed to see for herself.

Adeline still wanted to believe there was a fair way to fix this. Soon enough, she would understand exactly who she was dealing with.

That afternoon, the preliminary round of the Global Young Entrepreneurs Challenge was held in the Grand Hall downtown in Bellgrave.

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Bella's POVOnce, the four Vale brothers had been celebrated as the Vale family's golden boys—powerful young executives who commanded attention wherever they went and seemed fiercely loyal to one another. Now, desperate to escape responsibility, they were turning on each other in the mud. Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

Third-Person POVAdeline didn't bother arguing. Instead, she turned to the chief engineer, Jack Bennett, standing nearby. "Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
