Chapter 8

Auteur: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

"If you refuse to bend, then I suppose your brothers will have to teach you how." Evander's voice turned ice-cold. "Hold her down. Make her kneel before Marielle."

Adeline fought desperately, but she was no match for several grown security guards. They forced her downward.

Her knees were inches from the hard stage floor when a deafening roar erupted above the hall, drowning out every other sound.

The noise was so powerful that the chandeliers overhead began to tremble. Everyone looked up in alarm.

A second later, the auditorium's massive double doors burst open. A blast of wind tore through the entrance, sending papers flying and whipping curtains into the air.

Outside, more than a dozen black helicopters were descending onto the athletic field.

Each bore a different crest.

The Ashbourne family, the Voss family, the Calder family, and the Ravenscar family—names that carried enormous weight in the country's financial and corporate circles. Any one of those families had enough influence to shake an entire industry. And now, all of them had arrived at once.

Eight men in immaculate tailored suits strode through the open doors, their presence commanding the attention of the entire auditorium.

At their head was Ronan Ashbourne, head of the Ashbourne family. His gaze swept across the stage and immediately locked onto the guards restraining Adeline.

Evander froze when he recognized the newcomers. Then, his surprise gave way to a pleased smile.

He straightened his jacket and hurried forward to greet them. "Mr. Ashbourne, Mr. Voss, I wasn't expecting you here personally."

His smile broadened. "Is this about the Westmere development?"

Of course that was what Evander assumed. In his mind, these men had come because of Vale Group's resources and contracts he controlled.

After years of being entrusted with major projects, he'd apparently started thinking of himself as the true power behind the company.

Ronan didn't even look at him. He strode straight toward the stage.

One of the guards still had a firm grip on Adeline's shoulder. Ronan grabbed the man's arm, tore him away from her, and sent him sprawling across the stage.

The entire auditorium fell silent.

The smile vanished from Evander's face. "Mr. Ashbourne, what are you doing? That man works for the Vale family."

Ronan slowly turned around. There was something chilling in his expression as his gaze swept over the stunned crowd. Then, he looked past them, straight toward the glass of the second-floor control room.

Ronan Ashbourne, David Voss, Callum Calder, Kieran Ravenscar, and the four other men standing behind them…

Eight of the most powerful figures in the country, men whose names carried influence across entire industries.

Then, in full view of the faculty, the students, and my four adopted sons, all eight men dropped to one knee. Eight voices rang through the silent auditorium in perfect unison.

"Greetings, Ms. Vale."

The words hit the room like thunder.

Every trace of color drained from Evander's face. Slowly, almost mechanically, he turned toward the direction the eight men were facing.

I opened the door to the second-floor control room. Then, I started down the stairs.

My heels struck the metal steps with deliberate precision. With every step I took, my four adopted sons seemed to grow paler. By the time I reached the bottom, they looked as though the ground had disappeared beneath their feet.

I stopped in front of Ronan and the others.

Looking down at the eight kneeling men, I allowed the faintest smile to touch my lips. "It's been ten years. At least you still remember the rules."

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Bella's POVOnce, the four Vale brothers had been celebrated as the Vale family's golden boys—powerful young executives who commanded attention wherever they went and seemed fiercely loyal to one another. Now, desperate to escape responsibility, they were turning on each other in the mud. Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

Third-Person POVAdeline didn't bother arguing. Instead, she turned to the chief engineer, Jack Bennett, standing nearby. "Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
