Chapter 7

Author: Washing Wheat
Bella's POV

When one of Adeline's classmates called me, she sounded close to tears.

"Ms. Vale, you need to get here! Marielle set Adeline up outside the auditorium, and now Evander and the others are working with the school administration to punish her in front of the entire student body!"

My driver ran three red lights on the way there. By the time I reached the Grand Hall, the auditorium was packed. I headed for the rear entrance, only to find the corridor blocked by several guards wearing Vale Group security uniforms.

"Ms. Vale, Mr. Vale gave us strict instructions that no one is to interrupt today's proceedings." The head of security kept his eyes lowered respectfully. His arm, however, remained firmly across my path.

I almost laughed.

How impressive. They were using security guards paid by my company to keep me out of a building sponsored by my company.

I didn't bother forcing my way through. Instead, I turned around and headed upstairs to the control room. I shoved the door open and walked straight to the production console.

From behind the one-way glass, I had an unobstructed view of the entire auditorium. Adeline stood alone beneath the harsh glare of a spotlight.

Her hair was disheveled, and a fresh scrape stood out across the back of one hand. In the center of the front row sat my four adopted sons, lined up side by side.

Marielle was seated beside Evander. Her right leg was encased in an enormous cast, and faint tear tracks still marked her cheeks.

Evander held the microphone, his voice calm but carrying an authority that made it clear he expected to be obeyed. "Adeline, I'm going to ask you one last time. Did you push Marielle down those stairs?"

Adeline clenched her fists but kept her back perfectly straight. "No, I didn't. She saw me coming and threw herself down the steps!"

"You're lying!" Caspian slammed a hand against the table and shot to his feet. "When we got there, Marielle was in so much pain she could barely stay conscious, and you were just standing there watching her! Adeline, how can you be that cruel?"

Stellan adjusted his glasses, his voice as cold and clinical as if he were delivering a verdict. "The security camera just happened to malfunction, and you thought that meant no one could prove what you did?

"The four of us witnessed enough to know what happened. So today, in front of the entire school, you're going to get down on your knees and apologize to Marielle.

"Then, you'll read a formal statement admitting that you used your family's influence to secure your place in the competition."

Zet lounged back in his chair, a nasty smile spreading across his face. "And if you refuse? Vale Group withdraws every dollar of funding it provides to this school, effective tomorrow."

He turned toward the principal. "I'm sure you know how to deal with a student who behaves like this."

The principal, seated nearby, hurriedly wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Adeline, perhaps you should just apologize. There's no need to make this any more difficult for the school than it already is."

Whispers began spreading through the auditorium. The students stared at Adeline with open contempt.

"Unbelievable! So having a rich family means she can treat people however she wants?"

"I heard she paid someone to write that business proposal for her too. Marielle's the one who actually has talent."

"Just apologize already! Why should the rest of the school suffer because of you?"

Hundreds of people had already decided she was guilty. And my four adopted sons had made sure every accusation, every rumor, and every scrap of blame landed squarely on Adeline.

She slowly looked across the auditorium at the hostile faces surrounding her. Finally, her gaze returned to the four men in the front row.

Evander had once lifted her onto his shoulders and promised that as long as he was around, no one would ever hurt her.

Zet had once crossed half the city because she'd mentioned wanting cotton candy.

Those same brothers were now publicly humiliating her, determined to force her to bow her head to a girl who had set her up.

"I won't kneel." Adeline didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to. "I didn't do it, and I'm not confessing to something I didn't do."

Evander's expression darkened. "So that's your answer."

He lifted one hand. Several security guards immediately climbed onto the stage and seized Adeline by the shoulders.

Bella's POV"Ms. Vale." Oliver entered the room and handed me a tablet. "The latest routine report from the prison."I gave it a cursory glance.Over the past five years, prison life had been anything but uneventful for the four brothers. The people Ronan had put in place had made sure they received plenty of special attention every single day.A short video was attached to the report. Four gaunt men with prematurely graying hair appeared on the screen, dressed in prison uniforms and performing hard labor in the prison quarry.Evander's signature gold-rimmed glasses were long gone. His eyes were vacant now, his movements slow and mechanical as he carried one load after another.Caspian walked with a permanent limp after an injury sustained during a prison fight had never healed properly.Stellan had become stooped and frail, looking decades older than the man he had once been.Zet had fared worst of all. Years of incarceration had left him deeply unwell, and the volatile young

Bella's POVOnce, the four Vale brothers had been celebrated as the Vale family's golden boys—powerful young executives who commanded attention wherever they went and seemed fiercely loyal to one another. Now, desperate to escape responsibility, they were turning on each other in the mud. Whatever dignity or refinement they had once possessed was gone.Adeline watched the spectacle without a trace of sympathy. Then, she turned beneath her umbrella and walked back through the gates. "Close them."The heavy iron gates slowly swung shut behind her, drowning out the brothers' furious shouting and desperate pleas. And with that, the four of them were shut out of the Vale family's world for good.Three months later, the verdict came down. Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet Vale were convicted of embezzlement and large-scale corporate fraud. Each received a 20-year prison sentence. On the day they were sentenced, Adeline was on the top floor of Vale Group's headquarters, chairing the q

Bella's POVEvery word from Adeline struck exactly where it hurt, stripping away the last of their excuses. "You didn't come here because you want forgiveness. You came because you're desperate for someone to save you."Stellan closed his eyes in anguish. Zet simply lowered his head, defeated. He didn't even have the strength to argue anymore.Because Adeline was right about all of it.That was when I stepped out from behind her. Ronan followed, holding an umbrella over me as he took his place slightly behind my shoulder. The instant Evander saw me, desperation flashed across his face. He looked like a drowning man who had just spotted one last lifeline. "Mom! Please, just give us one more chance. We'll do anything. We'll spend the rest of our lives making this up to you."I looked at their tear-streaked faces and felt nothing."Do anything for me?" I said coolly. "You're not worth the trouble."I took the thick stack of documents from Ronan and threw them straight at Evander.

Bella's POVThe gates of the Vale residence remained firmly shut. Outside, Evander, Caspian, Stellan, and Zet had been kneeling in the rain for three straight hours. They were soaked to the bone. Their worn clothes clung to their bodies, their lips had gone pale from the cold, and none of them could stop shivering.Evander's hand was clenched around a faded pink jewelry box. Inside was the first bracelet he had ever bought for Adeline ten years ago. He had saved six months of allowance to afford it.Oliver stood beneath an umbrella on the other side of the iron gates, regarding the four men expressionlessly. "You should leave. Ms. Bella and Ms. Adeline have no desire to see any of you.""Mr. Bane, please." Caspian bowed his head desperately, splashing muddy water across his face. "We know we were wrong. We finally know what Marielle really is. She lied to us. She used us! We swear we'll never have anything to do with her again."Please just ask Adeline to come out and see us. Jus

Third-Person POV"Who do you think you're fooling, Zet Vale?" Marielle held a hand to her cheek, glaring at him with pure venom. "The four of you are broke! You can't even afford to buy me a decent makeup set anymore, so what gives you the right to expect me to stay and suffer with you?"Her expression twisted with resentment. "And whose fault is that? If you idiots hadn't gone after Bella Vale, would I be stuck living like this now?"The words stopped everyone cold.Evander and Caspian had arrived just in time to hear her, and both men stood frozen in the hallway.Evander stared at Marielle in disbelief. "Marielle… What are you talking about? You came to us crying. You told us Adeline was bullying you. That's why we stepped in. We were defending you."Marielle let out a scornful laugh. "And you believed me just because I said so? Did it ever occur to any of you to actually use your brains?"The color drained from Evander's face.Marielle wasn't finished. "I paid someone to pla

"Mr. Bennett, do we have the load-bearing results for the foundation in Sector B?""Yes, Ms. Vale," he replied immediately. "The calculations are complete. Everything falls within the parameters you projected."Adeline gave a small nod before turning her attention back to Evander. "You hear that?"Her voice was cool and utterly composed. "Vale Group didn't fall apart without you. If anything, we're running better than ever. That whole idea that you were 'irreplaceable'? That was nothing but a fantasy you invented to make yourselves feel better."Evander's face flushed crimson. He jabbed a finger at her. "Don't get so full of yourself, Adeline! Everything you have was handed to you by Mom!"Adeline took a step forward, closing the distance between them. Evander stood nearly a head taller, but somehow, she was the one who made him seem small."Wrong." She met h
