Chapter 2

Author: Double Edge
I found his impassioned tirade laughable.

Since I was a child, even when I was selling pancakes and dealing with the most troublesome thugs, no one dared to call me a parasite to my face.

I stared at him coldly, my voice steady. "I'm afraid you might be mistaken. I spent the money from my personal dividend account tied to my shares, not the company's operating funds. What's wrong with using my own dividends?"

Daniel didn't back down. Instead, he smirked contemptuously. "Your dividends? Theo, how are you so shameless? You're just an illiterate who has never been to college and sells pancakes on the street. What makes you think you're worthy of receiving dividends?

"If it weren't for Ms. Langford working tirelessly to run the company, we would've already gone under. Where do you think the money comes from? You only got those shares because you were fortunate enough to be born into the family. Are you even a man? How could you face Ms. Langford after everything she's done for the company?"

The executives and employees began to whisper among themselves when they heard his words.

"Daniel is right. Ms. Langford has worked so hard."

"Yeah, who can stand watching some clueless rich kid waste the money we work ourselves to the bone to earn every single day?"

"Does he really think he's something just because he's a Langford? Without Ms. Langford, he's nothing."

Looks of disdain, jealousy, and amusement were all fixed on me.

Holding the insulated food container in one hand, I turned to look at Lila, who had appeared at the entrance to the CEO's office at some point.

She was wearing a tailored suit, quietly watching as everyone criticized me.

I called out to her, "Lila."

I thought she would help me out like she normally did in front of my parents and tell everyone that the money was left to me by Grandpa.

But Lila just walked past me and stepped in front of Daniel. She massaged her temples, looking at me with exhaustion and helplessness in her eyes.

"Theo, Daniel just graduated. He's straightforward and righteous. He just wants to stand up for me because he notices how tired I am. Don't use your status to make things difficult for him, okay?"

I looked at her blankly.

Make things difficult for him?

I had only managed to say one thing, yet Daniel humiliated me in front of the entire company.

Lila turned toward Daniel and said softly, "Alright. It's none of your business now. Get back to work."

Daniel poked his head out from behind her and gave me a provocative, smug look.

Lila sighed and waved at me. "Go back first. I have a meeting. If it's nothing important, don't come to the company again. It's bad for our reputation."

I looked at her silently for a few seconds, then set the insulated food container down hard on a nearby table and left.

The next morning, I went to the company to retrieve an old document Grandpa had left in my office. But when I reached that floor, I caught a strong smell of smoke and looked up.

The nameplate on my spacious, brightly lit office had been taken down and replaced with a brand-new one that read, "Smoking Lounge".

The door was open, and Daniel was inside, directing a few workers to sweep the items on my desk into cardboard boxes.

"Hey, that ornament is poorly made. Just toss it out. It's taking up space."

I walked in and stared at him coldly. "What are you doing?"

Daniel, holding a half-smoked cigar between his fingers, turned around. Rather than looking panicked, he smirked when he saw me.

"Mr. Langford, you're right on time. Space is tight in the office, and since you never handle any business here, leaving this office empty would be a waste. I asked Ms. Langford to let us turn it into a VIP lounge, and she approved it."

He walked over to me and told me in a voice only the two of us could hear. "Oh, by the way, I've already submitted a request to the finance department to cancel all supplementary credit cards under your name and cut off your expense reimbursement allowance.

"The company doesn't support useless people. If you want money, go work in sales, or go back to selling pancakes on the street."

I took out my phone, and as expected, there were several text messages saying my bank cards had been frozen or had their spending limits reduced.

Employees who wanted a taste of the spectacle had gathered outside the door. Everyone was whispering, waiting for me, the good-for-nothing young master, to throw a tantrum and run off to Lila to complain.

I looked at the messages on my phone. I wasn't angry at all. If anything, I was strangely calm.

I nodded and left the office without saying a single word, heading to the elevator.

  • My Adoptive Sister Treats My Fortune as Hers   Chapter 9

My parents rushed over when they heard I'd called an emergency meeting with the executives. They wanted to smooth things over between Lila and me, but when they reached the door and heard me reading out the audit reports and Lila admitting her crimes, they were stunned. As if she'd found a final lifeline, Lila scrambled over to them and clung to Dad's leg. "Dad! Mom! Help me! Theo wants me dead! You've raised me all these years!"Dad's body trembled as he looked down at the "genius daughter" he had spent half of his life nurturing. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face. The force was so strong that blood immediately trickled from the corner of Lila's mouth."You idiot!" Dad was so furious that he couldn't stop shaking as he yelled, "Did we ever do wrong by you? How could you secretly plunder Langford Corporation of its wealth? The money we used to cover your losses included what your grandpa had set aside for emergencies, and the money we'd saved out of g

Sweat beaded on Lila's forehead. She looked at me, fear visible in her eyes, knowing that Daniel was only the start. My real target was her."Theo…" Lila's voice softened as she tried to play the family card. "What Daniel did was my fault. I'm sorry. But I've been with the family for so long. Dad and Mom treat me like their biological daughter, and I also think of you as my real brother. Even if I made a mistake at work, I still did a lot for the company."Are you really going to push me to the brink over something so trivial, ignoring everything our parents have done for us?"I might have relented at the sight of her groveling in the past. But now, she only made me sick."Everything they've done for us?" I sneered, took another audit report from Helena, and slapped it against Lila's chest. "How dare you bring that up! Lila, you know very well how you earned that reputation as the so-called business genius."Lila instinctively held onto the document. Her hands trembled when she sa

Daniel froze on the spot. His eyes widened, and he snapped, "What the hell are you talking about? When did I do that? Don't you dare frame me!"I walked over and stared at him coldly. "Frame you? Daniel, did you think you were so cool when you announced in front of everyone that you froze my bank cards yesterday? You kept saying I squandered the company's money, but I already told you that was the dividend money my grandpa left me.""You're just an intern. What right do you have to freeze the dividend account of the company's largest shareholder?"Daniel's eyes darted around, but he was still defiant. "I-It was Ms. Langford who agreed to it! What's wrong with temporarily freezing your account to keep the company's cash flow going?"I sneered.Helena's finance team uncovered everything Daniel had done over the past few days in just half a day.The CFO read the transaction records out loud. "Daniel abused his position as special assistant. While Mr. Langford's dividend account was

Nobody said a single word. The executives who had been talking loudly moments ago fell silent.Someone recognized the woman and nearly buckled at the knees, dropping back into their chair. "Helena?!" The mere mention of her name caused everyone's expressions to change.Helena Sullivan was a ruthless woman who had made her name at one of Waltz Street's top investment banks, infamous in the business world for her iron-fisted approach. She had the world's biggest investors and most influential people in her corner and had even turned a failing multinational company around in just three months. Many businesspeople had waited outside Helena's company for a whole month with billion-dollar deals to pitch, only to leave without ever seeing her.So they all wondered why a legendary figure like her would show up at Langford Corporation. Then, as everyone looked on in shock and fear, Helena came to my side, bowing her head slightly as she said respectfully, "Mr. Langford, I'm sorry I'm lat

The paper hit Lila in the face before falling to the floor.Everyone's eyes widened, as if they had seen a monster. To them, I was just a country bumpkin who only knew how to waste money and was easy to push around. Who would have thought that I would challenge Lila on her turf and turn the tables on her?Daniel came to his senses first. He strode over and snapped, "Theo, have you lost your mind? Do you know where you are now? This is an executive meeting, not the stall where you sell your pancakes!"How dare you tear the document! Do you think you're untouchable because of the shares that you hold? I'm telling you. Once Ms. Langford and these executives withdraw their support, you'll go bankrupt tomorrow! You won't even be able to afford food!"His face turned red as he went on.I glanced at him coldly, then pulled a document bearing the law firm's bright red seal from the folder I'd brought. I slammed it down in the middle of the table."Take a good look at this." I looked at t

Langford Corporation held its quarterly executive board meeting on Friday. It was the company's most important meeting, attended by top executives and shareholder representatives.Without informing anyone in advance, I told the driver to take me to the company. The meeting room was on the top level. When I reached the door, the double doors were slightly ajar, and Lila's confident voice came from inside."I've reached a preliminary agreement with investors over there for our overseas expansion plans for the second half of the year. Once the project gets started, our market value will at least double."A round of applause erupted from inside."Bravo, Ms. Langford!""Ms. Langford, your business instincts are getting sharper. We're certainly working for the right boss!"I looked inside through the cracks in the doors.Lila was sitting at the head of the oval table, acting like she ran the entire company, while Daniel stood beside her smugly, holding a stack of documents. When the
