Chapter 1

Author: Double Edge
Before my grandpa, Gary Langford, passed away, he went against the entire extended family and drew up a will, bypassing everyone else and leaving me a 60% stake in Langford Corporation.

I became the company's largest shareholder overnight, but I had no idea how to run a business, and couldn't even understand basic financial statements.

My parents, Rick Dunn and Beth Langford, didn't want to put too much pressure on me, so they got Lila Langford to temporarily run the business Grandpa left behind on my behalf.

"Theo, you lived a hard life. Now it's time to enjoy life. Lila will manage the business, so all you need to do is go play with cars, hang out with your friends, and learn how to be an heir."

My parents' words made sense.

We should leave the professional matters to the professionals.

And so, Lila handled the negotiations, met clients, and talked to the media for me. She was on her feet all day in high heels, running from one thing to the next.

As for me, I took the black card Grandpa left me and spent my days at various luxury menswear boutiques and supercar clubs, learning how to spend money and be a proper figurehead.

As time went on, Lila gained more and more respect within the company. Before long, everyone only knew the no-nonsense female CEO. No one even remembered me, the chairman who owned 60% of the shares.

Rumors began to spread, saying that Langford Corporation couldn't afford to lose Lila, and that I, who returned to the family from a small town, was just a freeloader.

I didn't think too much of them.

It was true that I didn't know how to manage a company, but I knew how to be grateful.

Lila worked for me, and I got the dividends.

It was a fair deal.

Everything was going fine until one day, Lila hired a newly graduated intern named Daniel Wagner.

Daniel graduated from a top college and was stubborn and proud, always claiming he couldn't tolerate even the slightest injustice. He'd only been with the company for a few days when Lila promoted him to special assistant for daring to speak his mind.

That afternoon, I left the car dealership and stopped by the office to drop off some soup my parents had made for Lila. I'd barely passed the lobby outside the CEO office when Daniel suddenly strode over, a thick stack of documents in his hands, and blocked my way.

It was the end of the workday, and executives and employees were everywhere.

His expression cold, Daniel suddenly raised his hand and threw a stack of reimbursement forms and expense statements down at my feet.

The papers were scattered across the floor, detailing my spending that month on haute couture suits, limited-edition watches, and supercar parts.

Everyone went quiet, their eyes locked onto us.

I narrowed my eyes at the papers on the floor.

Daniel had already started berating me, looking utterly indignant. "Mr. Langford, the company isn't your ATM! Just look at how much you've spent. A single suit costs hundreds of thousands, and a watch can cost over one million dollars. Have you ever made even a penny for the company?

"Ms. Langford is a woman, yet she stays up until midnight negotiating deals every day and even has to entertain clients while suffering from gastric bleeding! You're a grown man who hasn't done a thing. How can you spend the money she works so hard to earn without the slightest bit of guilt?

"You're nothing but a parasite sucking the life out of Langford Corporation!"

My parents rushed over when they heard I'd called an emergency meeting with the executives. They wanted to smooth things over between Lila and me, but when they reached the door and heard me reading out the audit reports and Lila admitting her crimes, they were stunned. As if she'd found a final lifeline, Lila scrambled over to them and clung to Dad's leg. "Dad! Mom! Help me! Theo wants me dead! You've raised me all these years!"Dad's body trembled as he looked down at the "genius daughter" he had spent half of his life nurturing. He suddenly raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face. The force was so strong that blood immediately trickled from the corner of Lila's mouth."You idiot!" Dad was so furious that he couldn't stop shaking as he yelled, "Did we ever do wrong by you? How could you secretly plunder Langford Corporation of its wealth? The money we used to cover your losses included what your grandpa had set aside for emergencies, and the money we'd saved out of g

Sweat beaded on Lila's forehead. She looked at me, fear visible in her eyes, knowing that Daniel was only the start. My real target was her."Theo…" Lila's voice softened as she tried to play the family card. "What Daniel did was my fault. I'm sorry. But I've been with the family for so long. Dad and Mom treat me like their biological daughter, and I also think of you as my real brother. Even if I made a mistake at work, I still did a lot for the company."Are you really going to push me to the brink over something so trivial, ignoring everything our parents have done for us?"I might have relented at the sight of her groveling in the past. But now, she only made me sick."Everything they've done for us?" I sneered, took another audit report from Helena, and slapped it against Lila's chest. "How dare you bring that up! Lila, you know very well how you earned that reputation as the so-called business genius."Lila instinctively held onto the document. Her hands trembled when she sa

Daniel froze on the spot. His eyes widened, and he snapped, "What the hell are you talking about? When did I do that? Don't you dare frame me!"I walked over and stared at him coldly. "Frame you? Daniel, did you think you were so cool when you announced in front of everyone that you froze my bank cards yesterday? You kept saying I squandered the company's money, but I already told you that was the dividend money my grandpa left me.""You're just an intern. What right do you have to freeze the dividend account of the company's largest shareholder?"Daniel's eyes darted around, but he was still defiant. "I-It was Ms. Langford who agreed to it! What's wrong with temporarily freezing your account to keep the company's cash flow going?"I sneered.Helena's finance team uncovered everything Daniel had done over the past few days in just half a day.The CFO read the transaction records out loud. "Daniel abused his position as special assistant. While Mr. Langford's dividend account was

Nobody said a single word. The executives who had been talking loudly moments ago fell silent.Someone recognized the woman and nearly buckled at the knees, dropping back into their chair. "Helena?!" The mere mention of her name caused everyone's expressions to change.Helena Sullivan was a ruthless woman who had made her name at one of Waltz Street's top investment banks, infamous in the business world for her iron-fisted approach. She had the world's biggest investors and most influential people in her corner and had even turned a failing multinational company around in just three months. Many businesspeople had waited outside Helena's company for a whole month with billion-dollar deals to pitch, only to leave without ever seeing her.So they all wondered why a legendary figure like her would show up at Langford Corporation. Then, as everyone looked on in shock and fear, Helena came to my side, bowing her head slightly as she said respectfully, "Mr. Langford, I'm sorry I'm lat

The paper hit Lila in the face before falling to the floor.Everyone's eyes widened, as if they had seen a monster. To them, I was just a country bumpkin who only knew how to waste money and was easy to push around. Who would have thought that I would challenge Lila on her turf and turn the tables on her?Daniel came to his senses first. He strode over and snapped, "Theo, have you lost your mind? Do you know where you are now? This is an executive meeting, not the stall where you sell your pancakes!"How dare you tear the document! Do you think you're untouchable because of the shares that you hold? I'm telling you. Once Ms. Langford and these executives withdraw their support, you'll go bankrupt tomorrow! You won't even be able to afford food!"His face turned red as he went on.I glanced at him coldly, then pulled a document bearing the law firm's bright red seal from the folder I'd brought. I slammed it down in the middle of the table."Take a good look at this." I looked at t

Langford Corporation held its quarterly executive board meeting on Friday. It was the company's most important meeting, attended by top executives and shareholder representatives.Without informing anyone in advance, I told the driver to take me to the company. The meeting room was on the top level. When I reached the door, the double doors were slightly ajar, and Lila's confident voice came from inside."I've reached a preliminary agreement with investors over there for our overseas expansion plans for the second half of the year. Once the project gets started, our market value will at least double."A round of applause erupted from inside."Bravo, Ms. Langford!""Ms. Langford, your business instincts are getting sharper. We're certainly working for the right boss!"I looked inside through the cracks in the doors.Lila was sitting at the head of the oval table, acting like she ran the entire company, while Daniel stood beside her smugly, holding a stack of documents. When the
