Chapter 2

Penulis: Zoe bear
Everything that followed seemed to fall into place naturally.

On weekends, I would go watch his sparring matches, marveling at the raw power in his movements, the effortless way he dodged and struck. Even among the most talented young wolves, Alpha Jackson stood out—his instincts razor-sharp, his dominance undeniable.

And out of all the people offering him water after a grueling fight, he would only drink the one I brought.

"Gotta make sure my girl didn’t poison me," he’d joke, flashing a grin before downing it in one gulp.

When the weather turned chilly, he’d drape his jacket over my shoulders without a word, pretending not to notice the teasing whistles from his friends. But I saw the way his ears turned red, and I lived for it.

Alpha Jackson introduced me to his social circle, a mix of future warriors, betas, and carefree nobles who all treated me with surprising warmth. Because of him, I made an effort to be more outgoing, to fit into his world.

And eventually, I did.

But one evening after school, while everyone was hanging out near the training grounds, he suddenly cornered me against a wall, his golden eyes dark with something unfamiliar.

"Nicole, can you stay away from them?" His voice was low, almost a growl.

I blinked. "What?"

"I get really jealous."

For a moment, I was stunned. Then, I couldn’t help but laugh. In that instant, the great Alpha Jackson—strong, untouchable, confident—looked like a sulking little wolf pup.

Seeing me laugh, he sighed dramatically and ruffled my hair, grinning. "You little troublemaker, does it make you that happy to see me jealous?"

I nodded, still giggling, and his lips crashed against mine in response.

A kiss—unexpected but searing, filled with possessiveness that sent heat spiraling down my spine.

My heart pounded like a drum. His scent wrapped around me, leaving no room for anything else.

Jackson always felt like an exuberant pup, radiating warmth, his love pouring onto me like sunshine.

On the night of our 18th birthday ceremony.

Shifting for the first time was brutal. My body burned, bones cracking and reforming as my wolf—dormant for so long—finally emerged in a storm of pain and power.

Then, through the agony, I caught it.

That scent.

Pine and musk.

A voice roared in my head.

"Mate!"

When I lifted my head, panting, Jackson was already in front of me in his wolf form, golden eyes glowing under the full moon. He shifted back effortlessly, as if his body had never known pain, and walked toward me with a smile that made my breath hitch.

He reached out, gently patting my head as I trembled from the aftershocks of my first shift.

"Nicole, We're fated mates. Are you happy?"

I nodded almost dumbly, my wolf still howling with joy in my mind.

Word spread like wildfire. It was as if everyone had expected it all along.

Amidst the congratulations, I clung tightly to Jackson’s waist, still overwhelmed by everything that had happened.

Some teased me. "Nicole, you’ve struck gold."

"Alpha Jackson is famous for how well he treats people."

And I knew they were right. I had struck gold.

Jackson’s care for me was meticulous.

He remembered my cycle and always had warm brown sugar water ready before I even needed it.

He flooded his social media with pictures of me, proudly captioning them with things like "Mine." and "My little Luna."

And whenever I spiraled into self-doubt, he would stand up without hesitation, declaring to anyone who would listen, "Nicole is the most amazing person in the world. End of discussion."

So, when he suggested we move in together, I didn’t even think twice.

"You’re so wonderful," I told him, my heart swelling. "If you were fire, I’d willingly dive into the flames for you."

Later, as I was sorting through our clothes in the new apartment, he suddenly hugged me from behind, pressing his face into my shoulder.

I smiled, assuming he was in a playful mood, and lightly pushed at him—only to feel the dampness on his cheeks.

Stunned, I turned around.

"Jackson?"

His voice was barely above a whisper. "I found out about your parents."

Something in my chest twisted.

That night, he refused to let go of me, his arms locked around me like he could shield me from the past.

It was then that he whispered a promise in my ear, one that sank into my bones like a vow.

"Nicole, I’ll love you with everything I have."

"Including the love your parents would have given you."

The words finally escaped my lips."I, Nicole Woolridge, reject you, Jackson Byrd, as my mate."The wind that day was relentless. It tangled my hair, stung my cheeks, and blurred my view of his face. Maybe that was for the best. For the first time, I couldn’t read him. Sadness, regret, determination, perhaps even sorrow—I couldn’t tell. But my wolf felt it. A rejection wasn’t just words to a werewolf. It was a severing of something primal, something written into our very bones. Our wolves howled in protest, but mine was silent, still. She had made her choice long ago. After a long, drawn-out silence, Jackson’s eyes darkened to the deep red hue of a wolf on the edge of shifting. Yet, somehow, he smiled."Are you with him now?" he asked suddenly.I froze, caught off guard, and didn’t answer. My wolf stirred, uneasy. He seemed to understand anyway, nodding as if something had finally clicked into place."I, Jackson Byrd, accept your rejection." he said quietly, his voice heavy. His claws

In the end, I lent him the soy sauce.Consider it a form of gratitude.Besides, maintaining a good relationship with neighbors is essential. The days after leaving Alpha Jackson were strangely quiet. Other than work, my life suddenly had a lot more free time—time that used to be spent wrapped up in his world, entangled in his presence. But it wasn’t all bad. I had more opportunities to focus on things I actually wanted to do, like learning oil painting, which I’d always been curious about. On my way back home with the supplies, a shiver crawled up my spine. My wolf stirred uneasily. I wasn’t alone.I kept walking, my grip tightening on the bag in my hands. Footsteps echoed behind me, matching my pace. Every time I turned to look, the street was empty, but the scent lingered—faint yet distinct. My heart pounded. Then, the footsteps sped up.Panic kicked in. I bolted, dropping my supplies in the process. “Ahhh—!”A strong hand grabbed me from behind, stopping me mid-run.“Why are you run

I had left in a hurry, packing only a few essentials. As I walked, I scrolled through my contacts and found my old landlord’s number.Back then, we had gotten along well, and she had once told me, “If you ever need a place again, just call me.”I wasn’t sure if she had meant it, but at this point, I had nothing to lose. The call connected on the second ring."Nicole! What a surprise!" she greeted warmly.Relief flooded me. After a brief conversation, she confirmed she had a vacant room. A quick negotiation later, I was on my way, suitcase in tow.I didn’t even hesitate.Block.By the time I signed the lease and unpacked, night had fallen. My stomach grumbled, reminding me that I had barely eaten all day.I grabbed my keys, ready to head to the supermarket. But the moment I stepped outside, the door across the hall creaked open.A man stepped out, drying his damp hair with a towel.I froze. It was him.The officer from the police station."What are you doing here?" I blurted out before

Alpha Jackson froze for a second, his eyes flickering with something unreadable. He hadn’t expected me to say that. The imprint of my slap was still visible on his face, a stark red against his otherwise flawless skin. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and careful."I don’t dislike you."I let out a sharp laugh. don’t dislike? That was the best he could come up with? But Jackson wasn’t done."Nicole, if I didn’t care about you, I wouldn’t be reacting like this."He hesitated, his brows drawing together as he carefully chose his next words."Just for slandering Yvonne, I would have taken you back to the police station again"That hit harder than I wanted to admit.I felt my stomach drop.As expected, Yvonne had struck first again.I swallowed, my voice quieter this time."If I told you she’s lying and that I’m the real victim, who would you believe?"Would you… believe me?I didn’t even need to ask. His answer was written all over his face.He didn’t.If I hadn’t lived through it myself,

When I walked out of the police station, my heart was eerily calm. I suppose that’s what happens when disappointment becomes a habit. Even a police officer who barely knew me could see how laughable my position was in Alpha Jackson’s heart. Before leaving, I thanked the officer—not for his help, but for not letting Alpha Jackson bail me out alongside him. Because of that, I could finally see the truth clearly. The officer’s expression shifted at my words, his usual teasing demeanor fading. "Take care of yourself, Luna." I flinched. That title didn’t belong to me anymore. I don’t remember how I made it back home. All I knew was that the Alpha who had promised to pick me up on time—my Alpha—was fast asleep on the couch. The scent of another wolf clung to the air, soft but unmistakable. Floral. Sweet. Sickening. A terrible thought struck me, and I rushed straight to the bedroom. The moment I pushed open the door, I saw her. Yvonne Harper, sprawled across my bed,

That time in my life was probably the happiest I’d ever been. For a while, I truly believed Alpha Jackson would love me wholeheartedly—that he was mine and mine alone. But everything changed when his childhood friend, Yvonne Harper, reappeared. No one expected her to return to Silver Claw Pack, let alone that she’d follow in Alpha Jackson's footsteps, enrolling at Silver Claw Pack’s No. 1 University and becoming his so-called "junior."Even when I was with Alpha Jackson, Yvonne was always there—hovering in the background, delicate as a porcelain doll, yet somehow unshakable. She’d call out to him in her syrupy, singsong voice, playfully repeating, "Senior Jackson~" over and over again like a spell meant to ensnare him.It grated on my nerves.Jackson, to his credit, frowned the first time she did it and asked, "Why did you come here too?"Yvonne tilted her head, her gaze flickering toward me before a slow, knowing smile curled on her lips."I’m used to having you take care of me," she
