Chapter 1

My wolf soul hovered directly above the stone table.

The cold, white surgical lights were painful to look at for my wolf soul.

My body was on the table.

After soaking in the Blackwater River for three days, my face was bloated and rotting. Even I felt sick looking at it.

Ethan Earnhart stood in front of the table with a scalpel in hand.

A mask covered half his face, but the eyes above it looked cold. It was as if he was staring at a pile of decaying wolf feces.

Sara stood beside him while covering her nose. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her voice was trembling.

"Ethan, is this really Elina?

"How did she end up like this? It's horrifying."

Ethan didn't pause. He snorted and pressed the tip of the blade against my chest.

"Don't be fooled, Sara.

"Someone as rotten as Elina, what wouldn't she do to get away from a rogue loan shark?

"This body is just a stand-in she found somewhere. A dead rogue. You're the only one naive enough to fall for her lies."

I screamed with my mouth wide open.

"Ethan! Smell her scent! It's me! I'm Elina!

"That's my body! I'm your sister!"

But my voice passed right through him and dissolved into the air that was heavy with herbs. It stirred nothing.

Ethan peeled away my clothes with clear disgust. In doing so, he exposed the bruises covering my body.

Those were the bruises left when the rogues beat me with iron rods while I was still alive.

Every wound reminded me of the terror and pain I experienced right before I died.

But in Ethan's eyes, they were just props in a performance I had supposedly staged.

He pointed at the horrific bruising on my inner thigh and turned to the young healer behind him with a sneer.

"See that? This is Elina's trick.

"She deliberately picked a rogue wolf who was abused long-term and had a filthy private life to impersonate herself.

"She's using these disgusting wounds to hint that she'd been living a terrible life out there, and that she had no choice but to borrow money from loan sharks.

"A cheap pity play to dodge her debts. She sold herself and tried to drag the entire Shadow Pack's name through the mud with her.

"She deserved to die."

The trainee healer clutched her clipboard. She hesitated to speak.

"Alpha, these wounds look like blunt-force trauma, and–"

"Enough."

Ethan cut her off impatiently. His eyes filled with revulsion.

"I know exactly what kind of person Elina is.

"She could sell herself to three old hunters for gambling money. Of course she could find a disgusting corpse like this."

Sara wiped her tears away. Her body swayed slightly.

"How could Elina be so thoughtless? Even if she needed money, she shouldn't have gotten herself into this mess.

"Ethan, don't be too hard on her. Maybe she really had no choice."

Ethan supported Sara with a hurt look on his face. His voice was very gentle.

"Sara, you're too kind. You always see the best in people.

"Back when our parents were killed in a hunter ambush, the Pack was drowning in debt. If you hadn't dropped out to work at a human restaurant so I could finish my management courses, the Shadow Pack would've been done for.

"Meanwhile, Elina, that ungrateful traitor, ran off with the compensation money our parents left behind. All these years, other than begging us for money to pay off her gambling debts, has she ever cared whether the pack lived or died?

"A leech like that doesn't deserve to be your sister. She doesn't even deserve to step foot inside Shadow Pack territory."

My soul felt like it was being torn apart while I watched this scene unfold.

So this was why.

In Ethan's memory, Sara was the one who dropped out to work, and I was the one who stole the money and ran.

However, the truth was that Sara stole the compensation money to buy designer bags. I was the one washing dishes through the night and handing out flyers day after day to scrape together the money that let him rebuild the pack.

Sara took credit for all the nights I stayed awake and all the blood I bled for this family.

Meanwhile, I became a traitor.

Ethan was the only family I had left in this world.

When I sold my blood to pay his tuition, he bought Sara a limited-edition handbag.

When I searched scrapyards for three consecutive days to recover his lost Alpha heirloom ring, he was throwing Sara a birthday party.

Now, I was dead.

I was killed by the very rogues he despised most.

Yet he stood here with a scalpel, ready to cut my chest open and decimate what little dignity I had left.

Ethan, if you realized the body on this table was really me one day, would you lose your mind?

Under the full moon, by the Blackwater River, there was a grand funeral. It was the highest-level water burial the Shadow Pack could offer. My body had been restored. I was in my favorite white dress as I lay inside a crystal coffin lined with white lilies.Ethan stood in black clothes and a white rose pinned to his chest. Before the entire pack, he dropped to his knees with a heavy thud."I am a sinner."His voice was carried across the riverbank through the amplifiers."I listened to slander. I misunderstood Elina. I forced her into a dead end with my own hands."Elina was the purest and bravest werewolf Shadow Pack ever had. She died protecting the Alpha heirloom."Today, I will wash away every stain on her name with my own blood."He knelt before my coffin and bowed three times in deep remorse. His knees split open, blood mixing with tears on the cold ground.I hovered above the crystal coffin. There was no satisfaction or hatred. I only felt exhausted and a sense of reli

Ethan didn't kill Sara right away.He picked up a handful of silver powder the hunters had dropped and, without a flicker of emotion, sprinkled it onto the wound along her spine."Ahh!"The silver burned through her flesh. She convulsed violently, and her fingernails scraped against the stone floor."Does it hurt?" Ethan's voice was cold. "Elina was in the Blackwater River for three days. Her wounds were eaten away by silver for three days. It's only just beginning for you."He picked up a broken iron rod, the same kind the hunters had used to beat me to death."This is for Elina."Crack!Sara's left arm snapped."This is repayment for every lie you spread about her."Crack! Her right arm was twisted at an impossible angle.Sara's screams weakened into hoarse gasps. She was drenched in blood, yet her eyes were still burning with rage."Kill me, Ethan. If you have the guts, kill me–"Ethan looked down at her coldly. "Death would be mercy."Being so close to death, Sara su

"Are you done talking?"Ethan, who was sprawled on the ground, suddenly stopped trembling. His voice was deep and hoarse. It wasn't weak anymore. Instead, he sounded like a demon spawned from hell to claim a life.Sara froze. The silver blade in her raised hand stalled midair. "What did you say?"Ethan slowly lifted his head. There was no trace of poisoning in his eyes. There was only an overwhelming murderous intent."I said, are you done saying your last words?"The next second, a terrifying force filled the space.Ethan's suit broke apart as black, iron-hard fur tore through his skin. Driven by grief and rage, he forcibly ignored the wolfsbane's effect and successfully transformed.A colossal black wolf appeared out of thin air. He was close to ten feet tall, and his fangs were gleaming. Even his eyes turned blood red."Damn it! How can he still transform? Kill him now!"The scar-faced man screamed before raising his silver scimitar.Ethan had already lost his mind. He d

The basement of the abandoned church was cold and damp. The air was thick with the stench of rot and mold. The moment they started walking down the stairs, an oddly sweet scent filled Ethan's nostrils. It was the scent of burning wolfsbane, a werewolf's natural bane."Sara, this smell–" Ethan staggered and braced himself against the wall as if he was feeling dizzy. "Isn't it a little too strong?"Sara walked ahead of him while holding a black candle. The flickering flame illuminated her face. Her expression was one of eerie excitement."It has to be strong to show how devout we are. Isn't that right, Ethan?"She turned around and stopped pretending. There was a creepy grin on her face."This is a concentrated wolfsbane that I prepared just for you. Even an Alpha would collapse after taking one breath."The moment she said that, Ethan dropped to the ground with a heavy thud. It was as if all strength had been drained from his body."S-Sara, you–" He struggled to lift his head,

By the time Ethan returned to the pack hall, it was already completely dark outside. He had changed into clean clothes. He now had his usual aloof expression on his face, but he still looked terrifyingly pale.Sara was pacing restlessly and gnawing at her fingernails. When she saw Ethan come in, she immediately switched to a fragile, tearful expression and ran toward him."Ethan! You're finally back. You gave me a fright. Why did Mr. Lancelot bring you with him? Was that body really Elina's?"Ethan didn't pull her into his arms like he usually did. Instead, he sidestepped her without a word and walked to the liquor cabinet. He poured himself a glass of liquor."No."He tipped his head back and swallowed the burning liquid. He was forcing down the blood rising in his throat."Mark made a mistake. It was just a rogue's corpse. The DNA didn't match."Sara sighed visibly. Her tense shoulders finally loosened up."I knew it! Elina might love gambling, but there's no way she'd end u

The pack enforcers soon brought back the final autopsy report.Mark held that thin sheet of paper in his hand and walked toward Ethan, who was still acting like a lunatic in the mud. He grabbed Ethan by the collar and yanked him upright."Look closely!"Mark flung the report hard against Ethan's face."The deceased's DNA is a complete match with Elina's."Extremely high levels of suppressants were detected in her system. It's a banned substance that prevents werewolves from transforming, making any sound, and even sending distress signals to blood connections."She was drugged, fully conscious, and completely unable to resist while she was tortured to death."That explained why I couldn't even scream when I died. I could only watch as they slaughtered me.Ethan trembled as he held the report. His tears, which were mixed with mud from the river, kept dripping down.Suddenly, he pressed the report against his chest, threw his head back, and let out a long, pitiful howl. The nex
