KAEL

Night settled quietly over the mountains.

The fire that had consumed the archive still burned in the distance, sending a dull orange glow into the clouds. Ronan had found us shortly after the reunion, bruised but alive, and after making sure no one had followed them, he led us to a small hunter's cabin hidden among the pines. It was old and simple, with one stone fireplace and just enough room for the four of us to rest until morning.

No one spoke much.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

  • My Alpha Buried the Wrong Luna   CHAPTER 188: THE NEW AGREEMENT

CASSIANI placed the final document in front of Kael, the ink still fresh where the last clause had been copied out by hand only an hour earlier, the parchment carrying that particular stiffness that comes before a document has been handled enough times to soften.Every other signature had already been added, each one placed carefully in the space designated for it, the names crowding closer together toward the bottom of the page than I'd originally anticipated when I first drafted the layout. Elara had signed for the sanctuary communities, her signature steady and unhurried, the same way she seemed to approach everything that mattered to her. Ronan had signed in support of the shared defense agreement he'd spent so many weeks building piece by careful piece between packs that had, not so long ago, counted each other among enemies. Noah had signed as well, though his signature carried a particular designation beneath it that I'd insisted on including at his own request — keeper of the

CASSIANElara spoke next, rising from her place near the far end of the table with the quiet, unhurried authority I'd come to recognize in her over these past difficult months."The sanctuary communities need protection too," she said, her voice carrying easily across the now-attentive room. "People who don't belong to powerful families, who have no army standing behind them and no bloodline claim anyone bothers to recognize, cannot become bargaining pieces every time two packs find themselves in disagreement. That's happened before, more than once, and this agreement needs to make certain it can't happen again simply because nobody thought to write the protection down clearly."She proposed an additional clause then, one she'd clearly thought through with considerable care — a formal protection for neutral communities and safe houses scattered across the territories, places built specifically to shelter people regardless of which pack they'd come from or which side of a dispute their

CASSIANThe hall had never held so many representatives at once.I stood near the entrance for a moment before taking my place at the center of the room, simply absorbing the sight of it, because I suspected I would want to remember exactly how it looked later, once the difficult work of the day had worn the novelty away. For the first time within living memory, Alphas who had spent generations defending their territories from one another, sometimes with words and sometimes with far worse, sat around the same table without an army waiting outside the doors to back up whatever position they'd come to argue for. There were no banners hanging from the rafters overhead to suggest that one bloodline held precedence over another, no ceremonial trappings designed to remind everyone present exactly where they stood in some inherited order of importance. The old council seal, the one that had hung on the far wall for longer than anyone currently living could remember it not being there, had be

NOAH Elias watched me carefully as I sat with the letter, the lamplight throwing soft shadows across the table between us. "He trusted you enough to leave the choice to you," Elias said finally, breaking the quiet that had settled over the archive. I looked up at him. "That's a strange kind of trust." "Perhaps the hardest kind," he said. "It would have been easier for him, in some ways, to simply decide for you and let you be angry about it afterward. Easier to bear the anger of a decision made than the uncertainty of one left open." I turned that thought over slowly. "He knew that if I discovered the truth too early, everyone around me would tell me what I was supposed to do with it before I'd had the chance to think it through myself." Elias nodded. "They would call you an heir. A claimant. A descendant with a responsibility that arrived stitched into your blood before you'd ever had the chance to decide whether you wanted it. Adrian didn't want any of those words to become you

  • My Alpha Buried the Wrong Luna   CHAPTER 184: ADRIAN'S LAST PROMISE

NOAHThe document from the distant pack remained on my desk long after everyone else had left the archive that evening, the lamplight around it burning low as the hours slipped past without my fully noticing their passage.I had read the first page three times without turning it over, unable to move past those opening lines to whatever waited on the reverse side. The paper itself was older than most of the records we had uncovered beneath Blackridge, its edges softened by age in a way that suggested careful handling across many years rather than neglect. There was no Keeper seal pressed into its surface, no founder's mark authenticating it, no political declaration waiting patiently on the other side to explain why it had been sent to me specifically. It was simply a letter, addressed directly to me by name, carried across considerable distance by a courier who likely had no idea what weight it actually carried.Elias stood near the doorway of the archive, giving me enough silence to

  • My Alpha Buried the Wrong Luna   CHAPTER 183: WHAT THE WAR LEFT BEHIND

RONANI presented the first full draft of the agreement at a gathering in Blackridge several weeks after I'd first begun sketching out its basic principles on the road between Westfall and the other damaged territories. Several Alphas objected almost immediately, their concerns arriving in a familiar rhythm I'd more or less expected before I ever walked into the room."What happens if another pack attacks us without warning, agreement or no agreement?" one of them asked, leaning forward across the table with the particular intensity of someone who had personally lived through exactly that scenario before."You defend yourselves," I said. "Nothing in this agreement changes that. No pack is asked to stand unarmed and wait for permission before protecting its own people.""And what if they claim afterward that we attacked first? That we started whatever conflict followed?""Then the evidence gets reviewed properly," I said, "the same way border disputes are already being reviewed under
