Chapter 3

Author: Anna Smith
At six that evening, Rowan knocked on my hotel room door.

“Ethan made a reservation at a restaurant by the river. It’s the one you wrote about in your travel journal.”

I did not want to go.

But that restaurant was the final stop I had planned for this trip when I was eighteen.

In the end, I changed for dinner.

I was not going to keep our promise.

I simply wanted to say goodbye to the version of myself who had waited for four years.

When the server led us into the private dining room, there were only three chairs at the table.

Ethan tapped his forehead.

“When I made the reservation, I forgot Claire would be joining us.”

The server had to add another chair beside the service door.

Lily sat next to Rowan, facing the river outside the window.

I was seated by the door and had to stand aside every time a dish was brought in.

When Rowan noticed that I had not touched my food, he said quietly,

“It’s just a chair. Does it really matter where you sit?”

I nodded.

“No. It doesn’t.”

After dinner, the restaurant held a New Year’s ring toss game.

The winner would receive the last colorful star lantern.

Rowan played three rounds with Lily.

When the final ring landed around the peg, Lily hugged the star lantern, her eyes crinkling with delight.

“Rowan, how are you good at everything?”

“I used to play this with Claire.”

It was the first time he had mentioned me all evening.

But he had used something he learned with me to win a gift for Lily.

Lily carried the star lantern back to the table.

I looked away and walked out onto the terrace alone.

Rowan followed me a moment later.

“Are you still angry?”

“No.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I’ll take you on the New Year’s river cruise later. Just the two of us.”

“There’s no need. I’m going back to the hotel.”

“I already bought the tickets.”

Impatience crept into Rowan’s voice.

“If you leave now, Lily will think she took your place. It’s only a boat ride. Don’t make this difficult for everyone.”

So even his offer to take me on the cruise was only meant to ease Lily’s guilt.

I did not refuse again.

Before I left, I did not want Rowan to realize anything was wrong.

When we arrived at the dock, the boat was due to depart in fifteen minutes.

Lily suddenly reached for her neck, and all the color drained from her face.

“My necklace is gone.”

It was the only thing her mother had left her. Inside the pendant was the last photograph they had taken together.

Lily frantically searched through all her pockets.

“I still had it when we left the restaurant. It must have fallen off there or in the taxi.”

Rowan responded immediately.

“I’ll go back with you and look for it.”

Lily instinctively grabbed his sleeve, then turned to look at me.

“But you promised to take Claire on the cruise.”

“The necklace is more important than a boat ride.”

Rowan shoved the two tickets into my hand.

“You and Ethan board first. I’ll catch up with you afterward.”

I glanced at the time.

“This is the last cruise tonight.”

Rowan’s expression darkened.

“Claire, that necklace is the only thing Lily has left from her mother.”

“At a time like this, can you stop making such a big deal over one boat ride?”

Ethan had already taken out his phone.

“I’ll contact the driver, then ask the restaurant to check their security footage.”

Rowan helped Lily into a car waiting by the road.

Ethan climbed in after them.

In the blink of an eye, I was the only one left at the dock.

The ticket attendant began urging me to board.

“Miss, the boat is about to leave. Are your companions still coming?”

I watched the car disappear into the distance.

“No.”

“Will you be boarding alone, then?”

I looked down at the two tickets in my hand.

When I was eighteen, Rowan had promised that the night after proposing to me in the central square, he would take me on the final New Year’s cruise.

On the boat, we would talk about our mating ceremony, where we would live, and the new healing center.

But last night, the proposal never happened.

And tonight, he was not here to board the boat with me.

It was never just one activity that he kept postponing.

It was our entire future.

“I’m not going.”

I handed the tickets back to the attendant and turned away.

Blood Moon Pack’s Chief Healer had already sent me my official employment documents and permanent pack transfer agreement.

[The healing center requires a minimum five-year commitment.]

[Once your transfer is complete, you will no longer be under the authority of Shadow Pack’s Alpha.]

Five years later, I completed my first assignment with Blood Moon Pack. The pack officially appointed me Deputy Chief Healer of the healing center.Mara handed me the appointment letter.“Will you stay?”I turned to the final page and signed my name without hesitation.“I will.”In the past, every decision I made began with Rowan.Would he like it? Would he be disappointed? Would it make him leave me?Now I finally understood that I did not need anyone’s permission to live my own life. That winter, I traveled to the werewolf capital as Blood Moon Pack’s representative at a healers’ conference. When the conference ended, Rowan was waiting for me by the exit.Five years had passed. He had officially become the Alpha of Shadow Pack and seemed far more composed than before.Mutual acquaintances had told me that Shadow Pack’s healing center had been completed and that my name had been added to the list of people who originally helped plan it.For five years, Rowan had sent me an apology thr

Rowan waited outside Blood Moon Pack’s healing center for three days.On the first day, he asked the front desk to pass along a message.[I’m outside. Come talk to me.]On the second day, his tone still sounded like a command.[Avoiding me won’t solve anything.]On the third day, he finally softened his approach.[I can explain the milk and the pass.]I did not reply to any of his messages. It was not that I did not want to hear his explanation. There was simply no reason to hear it anymore. On the fourth day, Shadow Pack’s current Alpha personally ordered Rowan to return. The new healing center could not open on schedule, and two healers who had agreed to join were beginning to reconsider.Rowan had no choice but to return to Shadow Pack that night. Before leaving, he asked the front desk to deliver one final message.[Once I’ve dealt with the healing center, I’ll come back for you.]He still refused to accept that I was not waiting for him. When Rowan returned to Shadow Pack, Lily wa

The next afternoon, I had just finished seeing my last patient when I spotted Rowan outside the healing center. He stood beside a car, looking exhausted from the journey, with a suitcase at his feet.Ethan and Lily had not come with him.The moment he saw me, the tension in his brow finally eased.“Pack your things and come back to Shadow Pack with me.”I removed my gloves.“I’m not going back.”Rowan’s expression darkened.“You’ve been making a scene for a week. Haven’t you had enough?”“The healing center’s opening has been delayed, and our apartment is sitting empty. You permanently transferred without saying a word and left everyone else to clean up your mess. Are you enjoying this?”I looked at him calmly.“I handed every completed document over to the Council.”“As for the apartment, you can let anyone you want live there.”He stared at me.“What about me?”“Didn’t you make your choice when you gave my place in the central square to Lily?”Rowan suddenly froze.“You went to the c

During my first week at Blood Moon Pack’s healing center, I left early every morning and returned late almost every night.During the day, I treated patients and tended to the patrol guards’ injuries. At night, I organized patient records and medication lists, often working until well past midnight. The work was exhausting, but no one treated my efforts as something they were entitled to.The treatment plans I proposed were discussed seriously, and my name was included on every patient file I organized. Even when lunch was being prepared, Mara would make a point of reminding everyone,“Claire’s stomach is still recovering. Save her something light.”These things should have felt ordinary, yet it took me several days to get used to them.On Friday afternoon, the healing center was scheduled to take its first full staff photo.Out of habit, I stepped aside.“I can take the picture for you.”Mara immediately grabbed my arm.“You’re part of the healing center too. Where do you think you’re

Dawn was just beginning to break when I arrived at Blood Moon Pack.Mara, the Chief Healer, met me at the border. When she saw that I had brought only one suitcase, she paused.“That’s all you have?”“It’s enough.”She did not ask any more questions. Instead, she handed me a cup of warm oat milk.“I checked the label. It doesn’t contain any dairy. Your stomach is still recovering, so take today to rest.”I wrapped my hands around the cup and quietly thanked her.The moment I crossed the border, the scent of Blood Moon Pack surrounded me. The last trace of my connection to Shadow Pack disappeared completely from the depths of my mind.Mara took me to the healing center. At the end of the hallway was a bright treatment room with plenty of natural light. A new nameplate had already been placed beside the door.[Claire Bennett, Resident Healer.]“This is the private treatment room I promised you.”Mara handed me my ID badge.“Welcome to Blood Moon Pack.”I stared down at it for a long time

  • My Alpha Chose Her, So I Left Forever   Chapter 5

Just after midnight, Rowan received a notification from the Pack Administration Office.[Claire Bennett has permanently transferred out of Shadow Pack.]He stared at the words, his expression growing darker by the second.Ethan leaned over to read the notification, then laughed.“She actually filed for a permanent transfer. Claire is making this as dramatic as possible to force you to go after her, isn’t she?”Lily asked quietly,“But she took her luggage with her. What if she really isn’t coming back?”“She’ll come back.”Rowan answered without the slightest hesitation.“She spent four years planning this trip. There’s no way she would just walk away.”For the past four years, whether he forgot one of our promises or abandoned me at the last minute to be with Lily, I was always the one who gave in first.Every time I did, it made him more certain that I always would.Rowan immediately called my number, but all he heard was a message saying that I could not be reached. Then he tried to
