Chapter 2

Author: Anna Smith
The hotel’s New Year’s activities began the next morning.

A huge wishing tree stood in the center of the courtyard, its branches covered with New Year’s wish cards written by the guests.

Beside it, a wall of love locks lined the covered walkway.

Couples could reserve a lock in advance, have their names and wishes for the future engraved on it, then hang it on the wall together.

When Rowan and I were eighteen, we made a promise.

Once I graduated from the Healer Academy, we would spend New Year’s Eve in the werewolf capital and hang our own love lock here.

I had reserved a spot when we checked in.

But now, all I wanted was to cancel it.

The staff member had just taken out the lock engraved with our names when Rowan walked up behind me.

He picked up the gold lock.

Rowan and Claire were engraved on the front. On the back were the words we had chosen all those years ago.

[From this year into forever.]

“Why didn’t you wait for me?” Rowan held the lock out to me.

I did not take it.

“Are you still angry about yesterday?” Rowan frowned. “You missed the celebration because your stomach hurt. Don’t blame anyone else.”

Ethan walked up behind him.

As Shadow Pack’s future Beta, he had always been calm and thoughtful. He was also the one who usually stepped in whenever Rowan and I argued.

“Rowan already promised to make it up to you next year,” he said evenly. “Claire, don’t let one accident ruin everyone’s morning.”

In the past, Ethan had stood between us to defend me.

Now he was still standing between us, but only to make excuses for every time Rowan chose someone else over me.

As though Ethan’s support had settled the matter, Rowan took my hand.

“Come on. Where do you want to hang it?”

He opened my hand and placed the cold lock in my palm.

I did not refuse again. I could not let him realize that I was leaving.

We had barely reached the love lock wall when Lily approached with a New Year’s wish card in her hand.

She glanced at the lock I was holding, then at the clock beside the wall.

Only three minutes remained before our reservation expired.

Her eyes gradually turned red.

“Rowan, could you help me hang my wish card from the highest branch?”

“Every New Year’s Eve, my mother used to help me write down my wish.”

“She’s gone now, but I want to hang the card as high as possible. Maybe she’ll be able to see it from there.”

Rowan immediately took the card.

“I’ll help you.”

The staff member reminded him,

“After nine, this spot will be given to the next couple.”

Lily could easily have asked a staff member to hang the card for her, but Rowan had already picked up the ladder beside the wishing tree.

“It’s just a lock. We can hang it another time.”

“Our reservation expires at nine,” I said.

Rowan frowned.

“Then we’ll make another reservation. We can come back next year.”

Next year again.

The proposal could wait until next year.

Our love lock could wait until next year too.

As long as I stayed where I was, everything he had promised me could be postponed forever.

Lily hurriedly grabbed his arm.

“Forget it. You should stay and hang the lock with Claire.”

She lowered her head and slowly pulled the wish card back.

“Mom has been gone for a long time. I can manage on my own.”

Rowan’s voice immediately softened.

“Don’t think like that.”

“I promised I would hang it for you. I’m not going to let you down.”

I said nothing else.

At exactly nine, the courtyard clock began to chime.

The staff member removed the reservation card with our names on it and gave the spot to the next couple.

Standing beneath the covered walkway, I watched Rowan climb the ladder and hang Lily’s wish card from the highest branch.

Ethan raised his phone.

“Lily, move a little closer to Rowan.”

The camera shutter clicked.

I handed the love lock engraved with Rowan’s and my names back to the staff member.

“Please dispose of this for me.”

She paused.

“Your names have already been engraved on it. Are you sure you don’t want to keep it as a souvenir?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

There was no point keeping a lock that had never been chosen.

After returning to my room, I canceled my flight back to Shadow Pack with the others and booked a new one to Blood Moon Pack.

The flight would depart at midnight.

By then, my permanent pack transfer would already be in effect.

And I would no longer belong to Shadow Pack.

Five years later, I completed my first assignment with Blood Moon Pack. The pack officially appointed me Deputy Chief Healer of the healing center.Mara handed me the appointment letter.“Will you stay?”I turned to the final page and signed my name without hesitation.“I will.”In the past, every decision I made began with Rowan.Would he like it? Would he be disappointed? Would it make him leave me?Now I finally understood that I did not need anyone’s permission to live my own life. That winter, I traveled to the werewolf capital as Blood Moon Pack’s representative at a healers’ conference. When the conference ended, Rowan was waiting for me by the exit.Five years had passed. He had officially become the Alpha of Shadow Pack and seemed far more composed than before.Mutual acquaintances had told me that Shadow Pack’s healing center had been completed and that my name had been added to the list of people who originally helped plan it.For five years, Rowan had sent me an apology thr

Rowan waited outside Blood Moon Pack’s healing center for three days.On the first day, he asked the front desk to pass along a message.[I’m outside. Come talk to me.]On the second day, his tone still sounded like a command.[Avoiding me won’t solve anything.]On the third day, he finally softened his approach.[I can explain the milk and the pass.]I did not reply to any of his messages. It was not that I did not want to hear his explanation. There was simply no reason to hear it anymore. On the fourth day, Shadow Pack’s current Alpha personally ordered Rowan to return. The new healing center could not open on schedule, and two healers who had agreed to join were beginning to reconsider.Rowan had no choice but to return to Shadow Pack that night. Before leaving, he asked the front desk to deliver one final message.[Once I’ve dealt with the healing center, I’ll come back for you.]He still refused to accept that I was not waiting for him. When Rowan returned to Shadow Pack, Lily wa

The next afternoon, I had just finished seeing my last patient when I spotted Rowan outside the healing center. He stood beside a car, looking exhausted from the journey, with a suitcase at his feet.Ethan and Lily had not come with him.The moment he saw me, the tension in his brow finally eased.“Pack your things and come back to Shadow Pack with me.”I removed my gloves.“I’m not going back.”Rowan’s expression darkened.“You’ve been making a scene for a week. Haven’t you had enough?”“The healing center’s opening has been delayed, and our apartment is sitting empty. You permanently transferred without saying a word and left everyone else to clean up your mess. Are you enjoying this?”I looked at him calmly.“I handed every completed document over to the Council.”“As for the apartment, you can let anyone you want live there.”He stared at me.“What about me?”“Didn’t you make your choice when you gave my place in the central square to Lily?”Rowan suddenly froze.“You went to the c

During my first week at Blood Moon Pack’s healing center, I left early every morning and returned late almost every night.During the day, I treated patients and tended to the patrol guards’ injuries. At night, I organized patient records and medication lists, often working until well past midnight. The work was exhausting, but no one treated my efforts as something they were entitled to.The treatment plans I proposed were discussed seriously, and my name was included on every patient file I organized. Even when lunch was being prepared, Mara would make a point of reminding everyone,“Claire’s stomach is still recovering. Save her something light.”These things should have felt ordinary, yet it took me several days to get used to them.On Friday afternoon, the healing center was scheduled to take its first full staff photo.Out of habit, I stepped aside.“I can take the picture for you.”Mara immediately grabbed my arm.“You’re part of the healing center too. Where do you think you’re

Dawn was just beginning to break when I arrived at Blood Moon Pack.Mara, the Chief Healer, met me at the border. When she saw that I had brought only one suitcase, she paused.“That’s all you have?”“It’s enough.”She did not ask any more questions. Instead, she handed me a cup of warm oat milk.“I checked the label. It doesn’t contain any dairy. Your stomach is still recovering, so take today to rest.”I wrapped my hands around the cup and quietly thanked her.The moment I crossed the border, the scent of Blood Moon Pack surrounded me. The last trace of my connection to Shadow Pack disappeared completely from the depths of my mind.Mara took me to the healing center. At the end of the hallway was a bright treatment room with plenty of natural light. A new nameplate had already been placed beside the door.[Claire Bennett, Resident Healer.]“This is the private treatment room I promised you.”Mara handed me my ID badge.“Welcome to Blood Moon Pack.”I stared down at it for a long time

  • My Alpha Chose Her, So I Left Forever   Chapter 5

Just after midnight, Rowan received a notification from the Pack Administration Office.[Claire Bennett has permanently transferred out of Shadow Pack.]He stared at the words, his expression growing darker by the second.Ethan leaned over to read the notification, then laughed.“She actually filed for a permanent transfer. Claire is making this as dramatic as possible to force you to go after her, isn’t she?”Lily asked quietly,“But she took her luggage with her. What if she really isn’t coming back?”“She’ll come back.”Rowan answered without the slightest hesitation.“She spent four years planning this trip. There’s no way she would just walk away.”For the past four years, whether he forgot one of our promises or abandoned me at the last minute to be with Lily, I was always the one who gave in first.Every time I did, it made him more certain that I always would.Rowan immediately called my number, but all he heard was a message saying that I could not be reached. Then he tried to
