Chapter 1

Author: Little Star
The year I turned eighteen and awakened my wolf, I saw Rex for the first time.

He emerged from the depths of the snow forest, and the silver wolf inside me suddenly opened her eyes.

The scent of pine flooded my senses, and a resonance deep in my soul shot through every nerve straight into my heart.

My silver wolf growled with excitement in my mindscape.

"It's him.

"The fated mate the Moon Goddess chose for us."

Rex's black wolf recognized me too.

That night, our two wolves called out to each other through our bodies, and the mate bond connected us.

But to help Rex secure the position of Alpha, we kept our relationship hidden.

The former Alpha and the Council of Elders believed that revealing a mate would give his rivals a weakness to exploit. Rex promised me that once he had secured his place as Alpha, he would hold the mating ceremony in front of the entire pack and complete the mark.

In seven years, we never did.

Every full moon, the instinctive restlessness of our wolves and the longing born from the mate bond would peak.

Several times, Rex had pressed his fangs to the side of my neck. His black wolf screamed at him to bite down, but every time, he forced himself to stop.

"Just a little longer, Wendy.

"I want every member of the pack to know that you're my only mate."

Because of that promise, I waited seven full years.

The day Rex claimed the Alpha title, he finally announced that he would hold the mating ceremony for me.

The full moon hung high overhead. Pack members filled the sacred grounds with moonflowers and offered the first kill of the spring hunt to the Moon Goddess.

Bonfires blazed. Warriors shifted into wolf form and howled at the sky, their voices rising and falling in chorus.

Healer Martha Ellis stood beside the sacred fire, ready to witness the marking.

Rex walked toward me in his ceremonial robes.

His black wolf slammed against his mindscape with excitement, and through the mate bond, even I could feel its urgency and joy.

Rex stopped in front of me and leaned toward me, his gaze fixed on the side of my neck.

The black wolf kept urging him on.

"Now.

"Complete the mark. She's waited seven years for us."

Rex leaned down, his hot breath brushing my skin.

But just as his fangs were about to touch me, Lilia lunged forward.

She released her gray wolf and shifted into partial wolf form.

Claws tore through her skin, fangs jutted from her lips, and gray-brown fur sprouted wildly along her spine.

She knocked over the sacred fire basin with one swipe, shredded the ceremonial wreath, and clamped her teeth onto the hem of Rex's coat.

"Rex, you promised you'd only ever protect me."

Rex's body visibly stiffened.

His stance was still angled toward me, and his fingers instinctively reached for me.

The black wolf crashed against his consciousness in a frenzy.

"Don't turn around!

"Complete the mark!

"She is our fated mate!"

But Lilia let out a strangled whimper.

She trembled all over, her eyes rimmed with red, every strand of fur on her back standing on end, looking as though she might completely lose control at any moment.

But between gasps, she darted a glance at Rex.

Only when she saw his resolve wavering did she cling even tighter to his leg.

"Rex, it hurts... it hurts so much..."

Rex's clenched fingers slowly uncurled.

He had already taken half a step toward me, but in the end, he forced himself to turn around and walk to Lilia.

The black wolf roared with fury inside his mindscape.

"Go back! Complete the mark!

"That lunatic ruined our ceremony!"

But Rex forced the black wolf into submission.

He wrapped his arms around Lilia and smoothed the bristling fur along her back until her breathing steadied. Only then did he finally look at me.

"Wendy, Lilia's wolf lost control again.

"Let's pause the ceremony until she settles down."

He said it as if it were obvious.

As though I would keep standing in place and waiting for him, the way I had for the past seven years.

I forced down my silver wolf's anguished cry and looked at him coldly.

"Alpha Rex, tonight you either complete the mark, or we're finished for good.

"Choose."

Rex's expression darkened instantly.

"Wendy, you know what Lilia's going through. Do you really have to back me into a corner right now?"

I looked into his eyes, searching for even a trace of the warmth that used to be there.

He wasn't entirely unmoved.

His fingertips were still trembling, and the black wolf was still crashing against his consciousness.

But in the end, the look that settled in his eyes was still one of reproach, aimed at me.

Over the past seven years, things like this had happened countless times.

According to Rex, Lilia had been abandoned by her original pack as a child. Once, he hadn't caught her in time, and she had fallen down a slope.

Ever since then, whenever Lilia clutched her head and said she was in pain, he would think of that accident.

Lilia also claimed that her gray wolf had been traumatized by the fall and frequently lost control.

Rex's guilt over that accident had long since become an invisible shackle.

Whenever Lilia cried out in pain, he forgot everything else.

Including me.

Before long, another message arrived from Beta Ormond. The earlier border intelligence had been accurate. After becoming a rogue, Lilia's gray wolf had spiraled completely out of control. She had joined the Thornvine Pack, a rival of the old pack, trading her knowledge of the former territory for protection.Over the past year, she had been secretly mapping the pack's defenses and helping the Thornvine Pack locate gaps in the patrol routes.Although Rex had rebuilt the defenses and added three layers of patrols, Lilia led a group through an extremely well-hidden abandoned drainage tunnel and burned wolfsbane near the outposts to mask their scent and disrupt the Warriors' tracking. The main entrance to that channel had been sealed. But as a child, Lilia had discovered a side passage hidden in a rock crevice. The Thornvine Pack briefly breached the second line of defense.Rex shifted fully and led the Warriors to drive the invaders into the valley. His black wolf was still powerful. But

After Rex left, I apologized to Kael."About what I said...""I know you just wanted him to leave."Kael wasn't upset."This time, I was willing to go along with it."But next time, give me a heads-up."He paused for a moment."Not because I mind being used."But because whatever you have to face, I want to be ready to face it with you."A few days later, Rex came to my cabin again.Unlike his first visit, when he had arrived full of urgency and begged me to return, this time he stood quietly outside until I allowed him in.He placed a memory crystal on the table. The crystal contained a record of everything that had happened in the past year. The Moon Spirit Pool, cleaned and restored. The Moon Spirit Stone, repaired.Multiple Gamma guards rotating day and night. The sealed drainage tunnel. And every old order that had favored Lilia, revoked. He also brought back my parents' portrait, the one that had been torn apart. It had been carefully restored. The cracks were still there, but my

After leaving the old territory, I headed north. No one knew me here.I traded game and pelts for coin and rented an old cabin with a hot spring at the foot of the mountains.Life in the Northern Territory moved slowly. On full moons, the local pack held ceremonies on the snow plains.Hunters went into the mountains at dawn and came back at dusk with game and herbs. My silver wolf slept for nearly two months. The first time she opened her eyes again in my mindscape, I was setting traps by the edge of a snow cliff. She let out a faint but steady sigh."It's quiet here."We're finally safe."A tall figure stood nearby. It was Alpha Kael Bennett of the Northern Territory. He was the most powerful white-wolf Alpha in the entire Northern Territory. When he noticed me looking, Alpha Kael kept his distance and called out a warning."The ice below you is hollow. Three steps to the left."I did as he said, and the patch of snow under my feet collapsed with a crash. After that day, I ran into Ka

When they returned to the pack, Rex didn't confront Lilia right away.He shut himself in the Alpha's tent for an entire night. In the dim light, he replayed every scene from the past seven years.Wendy's forehead split open by the moonstone. Her legs charred by the coals. Her parents' portrait shredded to pieces. And her figure kneeling in despair beside the Moon Spirit Pool.Every time, he had soothed his conscience with the same two words: guilt and duty.He had believed that once Lilia recovered, everything would go back to the way it was.But with his constant indulgence of Lilia, Wendy had been trampled into the mud, bit by bit.The black wolf delivered its cold verdict from within his mindscape:"You're the one who destroyed our home."Your arrogance, your cowardice, and your stupidity made us lose her forever."Crushing regret tore through his heart. At dawn, Rex ordered Beta Ormond and Lead Warrior Nolan Reed to begin an investigation, his eyes bloodshot.Three days later, a me

The next morning before setting out, Rex tried to reach Wendy. There was no response. The mate bond had been severed. He could no longer use her scent or soul sense to track her.The black wolf tore restlessly at the walls of his mindscape and taunted him coldly:"She's gone."You drove her away."You threw away the Moon Goddess's gift for a liar."Rex turned off the communication crystal."Rex, my head really hurts."Lilia clung to his arm.Rex was silent for a moment, then raised his hand anyway and massaged her temples. But late that night, he didn't return to the Alpha's tent.He went alone into the snow forest to the east. That was where he and Wendy had hunted together for the first time.Seven years ago, they had each carved a claw mark into the trunk of a massive cedar, promising to return after the marking and connect the two marks into one.Rex stood beneath the tree, his fingertips tracing slowly over the claw mark Wendy had left. After seven years of wind and snow, the mark

Before leaving the pack, I decided to visit Moon Spirit Falls to say goodbye to my parents. The Moon Spirit Pool was the pack's sacred heart, where they honored the Moon Goddess and housed the ancestral soul energy.Under the pack's strict laws, the Gammas were elite warriors assigned exclusively to guard the sacred grounds. On any normal day, Gamma Cole Mercer and Gamma Evan Brooks stood guard at the entrance around the clock. They took orders only from the Alpha in person or from a pass bearing his complete soul seal.No one could reassign them on a whim. But when I arrived, the entrance was unguarded.A crumpled note lay in the grass. The handwriting was a hurried scrawl."Emergency order from the healing tent.
