Chapter 5

Author: Candice Rowan
The ward was completely silent.

The healer looked at me helplessly. "I'm sorry, Luna. She suffered severe emotional distress. There's nothing more we can do."

I collapsed to the floor and felt as if everything inside me had been hollowed out.

While sorting through Mom's belongings, I found a voice recorder beneath her pillow. I pressed play.

Elena's voice came through. Her voice was soft and gentle, every word sounded cruel.

"Katie, I feel sorry for you. Your daughter is the pack's Luna, yet she can't even keep her Alpha mate around. All she can do is watch him get stolen away by me.

"So what if she's the Luna? Caius believes me, not her.

"Even her own son hates her and helps me frame her. How pathetic."

Mom was paralyzed and couldn't move, but she could still hear.

Elena had killed her with those vicious words.

Rage burned through my entire body like acid.

I stormed out of the hospital. From afar, I saw the three of them laughing in a carefree manner on the field.

I tightened my grip on the silver sword in my hand and charged toward them. Even as the silver burned my palm until the flesh was raw and bloody, I no longer cared.

I just wanted to drag Elena down to hell with me.

Caius grabbed my wrist. "Natasha! What the hell are you doing now?

"Stop! If you attack another pack member, you'll be banished!"

Other pack members gathered around us while pointing at us and whispering among themselves.

Marcus threw himself in front of Elena.

"Mom always bullies Elena! Elena finally managed to make Mom forgive her, and now Mom is trying to hurt her again like before. Mom's crazy! Stay away from her!"

He picked up a rock and hurled it at me. The crowd joined in while shouting along with him.

"The pack has never allowed members to attack each other! Even if she's the Luna, she should still be banished!"

"Exactly! Elena has always been in poor health, and yet Luna still bullies her! That's despicable!"

Their harsh insults and contempt rained down on me without mercy.

I looked at Caius through the crowd. He was still shielding Elena with his body.

I smiled bitterly from feeling broken and hopeless.

"Caius, if there's a next life, I pray I never meet you again."

I raised the silver sword I'd prepared long ago and plunged it into my own chest.

Caius refused to believe I was dead.Even after the healer confirmed it again and again, and even after my body had gone cold and stiff, he stayed beside me with bloodshot eyes.He began desperately searching for anything that could prove I was still alive. She can do it again."On the third day, he drove to the healer's den to bring Mom home. But when he pushed open the door, the bed was empty.Caius froze. "Where is she?"The healer lowered her gaze. "Natasha's mom passed away three days ago.""That's impossible! How could that–"Before finishing his sentence, he suddenly stopped cold. His body became tense. He recalled that three days ago, while he had been with Marcus, he'd sensed someone in the pack had died.He was about to investigate when Elena called and said she wasn't feeling well. She asked him to go to her.Later, I showed up and killed myself. Consumed by the pain of losing h

Elena dusted off her clothes and headed to the square without looking back.Marcus stood frozen in place. He reached out and tugged at the hem of her shirt. "Elena, aren't we going to the healer's den?"She didn't even turn around. "I don't want to go. Seeing Natasha like that would give me nightmares."Marcus looked in the direction Caius had gone and nodded as if he understood. 'That's right. Elena shouldn't go to the healer's den. She'll be scared. Dad always says she's sensitive.'"In that case, can we wait for Dad to come back before we go see Mom together?"Elena didn't answer. She had already walked far away.Marcus stood where he was and felt a chill down his spine. He whispered, "E-Elena, can you stay with me? I-I'm too scared to be alone."Elena turned around and frowned at him. "How old do you think you are? Why do you still need someone to hold your hand? You're pathetic."Marcus froze. His eyes instantly welled up with tears. He couldn't believe that the once-gent

That night, I drank the water Caius handed me like I always did. After the two of them sneaked out, I got up and followed them.Through a crack in the door, I saw a table piled with food. Elena was smiling while she untied her apron.Marcus sat at the dining table before happily throwing his arms around her. "Elena, I love your cooking more than anyone else's!"I pushed the door open and asked in a trembling voice, "Caius, you promised you wouldn't see Elena in private anymore. Was any word you said to me ever true?"Caius turned around. The moment he saw me, his expression darkened. "Why are you here?""Why can't I be here?" I stared at Elena. "Are you afraid I'll find out that you promised not to see her in private, yet you still came here?"Caius looked at me helplessly. "I only brought Marcus here because he missed Elena. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to get the wrong idea."After a pause, his voice turned solemn. It came out sounding like a warning. "Natasha,
