Chapter 5

What the fuck happened?!

5 Years later (St. Louis Hospital, California)

Anne Pov

“Code blue! Code blue! ICU code blue!” I rolled my eyes at the announcement; why did I choose to become a doctor, for crying out loud?!

“Doctor…”

“I'll be right there. I got the message,” I said to the nurse who came to call me.

It's been five years since I left the pack, and the road hasn't been all good and smooth, but I'm so proud of what I've become regardless of the stress I go through daily.

“What's the details?”

“Got shot with a bullet close to his heart…” I nodded as I washed my hands, and wore my surgical coat and gloves, ready to operate on the young man.

I began the operation fully with the head doctor watching through the glass frame from the next room. I've become a hot cake here in the human world…

***

“Anne, that was fantastic!” our head doctor said suddenly rushing to me as I exited the room

“I've always been doing a fantastic job…” I rolled my eyes as he followed behind me like a fly would do to a cupcake

“I know right…”

“So do well to increase my salary…” I dumped the extra glove with me in his pocket before entering my office. There's always this fulfillment I get after saving people's lives and…

“A phone call ma'am…” my assistant walked in

“Okay…” I collected the phone from her and what followed was whining

“Mummy! I want to go home!” My brows furrowed on their own

“Wait! Princess, you took your phone to school?” I said in a voice sounding almost like a whisper yell

“It’s boring here…” she kept telling n whining

“Where's your brother?”

“He's with a girl…a cute girl”

“What?”

“Bye! Bye, I'm having a class now,” she said almost immediately and hung up; what the fuck!

“The twins again?” My assistant asked

“It's Aurora this time…” she giggled as she walked away.

Oh, I forgot to say, I'm now a mother of two lovely kids and their father…well, I don't want to even talk about that.

***

It was two hours past my closing time, but I had to check up on some patients, so I quickly placed a call to my fiance…yes, my fiance. I pleaded with him to pick up the kids from school which he already did…how thoughtful of him.

Well, I met Fredrick when I was frustrated years ago when I newly came into the human world with no clue of what had happened to me; he took me in, and thanks to his support, I'm who I am today.

After checking the patients, I packed up and went to the car. I brought my engine back to life and started driving home. I was in a hurry as I had to stop by the supermarket to get groceries but I soon noticed a car following behind me. I became scared as I didn't know why not what they wanted with me. I suddenly made a swift turn to be sure they were following me, and yes, they followed me.

“Oh no…what are they? Kidnappers?!” I quickly started dialing Fred's number but at the worst time, it wasn't connecting

“Oh God, help me…” I heard a loud screening and a car was parked in front of me; I quickly stepped on my break in shock.

“What the fuck is going on?!” I yelled at the driver but he just came down gallantly, ignoring my question

“Wait! Charles!” I jumped out of my skin as I looked at the person in front of me. I cleaned my eyes to be sure I wasn't seeing things, but it was truly him.

“Anne, can we talk?” He asked leaning on my car

“No…” I made to start the car but a force kept holding the key in place

“Please don't be a baby…” I rolled my eyes. Is he in the position to say this when he completely acted like a baby and even abandoned me five years ago?

“You're not worthy of speaking to me” I brought my car engine back making a jerking move, and he quickly jumped off my car

“Please, I really need your help…” he sounded desperate, but I wasn't going to be fooled by him again.

“Ask your kind for help, Charles,” I zoomed off. I could see him standing in disbelief through my rearview mirror and I felt some sense of pride.

“I can't bring myself to face you after what happened…” I felt tears building up in my eyes.

I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, trying to focus on the road, but my vision was already blurring. Five years… five whole years of pain, heartbreak, and rebuilding myself from scratch, only for him to appear on a random street in California like nothing happened.

Like he didn’t shatter me.

“Why now, Charles? Why today?” I whispered shakily.

I sped up, refusing to slow down until I was far enough away from him. The last thing I needed was the past catching up with me. I had a new life, a new family… even if it wasn’t perfect.

My phone rang and I nearly jumped.

“Fred…” I breathed in relief, wiping my eyes again before picking up the call.

“Anne? Are you on your way?” His warm voice soothed some of the trembling in my chest.

“Yes… yes, I’m coming.” I forced a smile even though he couldn’t see me. “How are the kids? Did Aurora eat properly today?”

“She did. And Jasper wants to show you his new drawing the moment you walk in.” He chuckled lightly.

My heart softened.

My babies… my whole world.

“I’ll be home soon,” I whispered.

“Drive safe, love.”

“I will.”

I hung up and exhaled deeply.

At least here, with Fredrick and my kids, I wasn’t invisible.

I reached the next stop sign and finally allowed myself to breathe normally. Maybe seeing Charles was just a fluke. Maybe he happened to be in the human world for something unrelated to me. Just maybe.

Suddenly

THUMP!

My heart lurched as something slammed against the side of my car.

“What the ?!”

I looked through the mirror.

Nothing.

No car.

No animal.

Just… darkness.

A cold shiver crawled up my spine.

“No, not now… not again…” I whispered.

I quickly rolled up all the windows, locked the doors, and tightened my grip on the steering wheel. My wolf silent for years, stirred faintly in my chest. Not strong enough to shift, but strong enough to sense danger.

The streetlight above me flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out completely.

Darkness swallowed the entire intersection.

My breath hitched.

“T-this isn’t normal…”

I tried to start the car again.

Click. Click. Click.

The engine wouldn’t turn.

My heart hammered painfully. I reached for my phone but the screen suddenly went black.

“No… no!”

I tried powering it on.

Nothing.

Then I heard it.

Footsteps.

Slow. Heavy. Purposeful.

Coming toward my car.

Panic surged through my veins.

“Who’s there?” I yelled, but my voice cracked.

No answer.

Just those steady footsteps approaching… closer… closer…

I swallowed hard and pressed myself back into my seat.

Then,

TAP. TAP. TAP.

Knuckles tapped my window.

I jumped and whipped my head to the side.

But froze.

Because standing outside my driver's window…

…was Charles.

But not the Charles I’d seen minutes ago.

This one looked different. Wilder. His green eyes glowed a sharp, unnatural shade, and his entire aura radiated a power I hadn’t felt in years.

My mouth fell open.

“Charles? What? what are you doing? How did you get here so fast?!”

He didn’t speak.

He simply lifted his hand and placed it against the glass.

“Anne,” his voice echoed through my mind instead.

A mind-link.

A forced one.

Something only an Alpha could do.

My pulse skyrocketed.

“No stop! Stop mind-linking me!”

“I tried speaking to you the normal way… you didn’t listen.”

Anger and desperation rushed through his mental tone.

“Charles, leave me alone! You have no right to”

“Anne… my father is dying.”

My breath caught.

“I need you.”

His voice shook.

“I need your help. Please.”

I clenched my jaw, shaking my head fiercely.

“No. I’m not going back there. Not after everything you did.”

He exhaled shakily, leaning his forehead against the window.

“You weren’t supposed to leave…”

His voice cracked slightly.

“You weren’t supposed to disappear.”

My throat tightened.

“You made your choice, Charles.”

I reached for the ignition again,

the car suddenly roared back to life.

I looked up.

Charles had already stepped back, the glow in his eyes dimming.

He whispered something through the glass, but the moment my headlights flashed, he vanished like he was never there.

I gasped, staring at the empty road.

“What the hell… happened…?”

My breath shook.

This wasn’t normal.

None of this was normal.

I hit the gas and sped home, heart thundering, mind spiraling.

And as I pulled into my driveway, one single thought echoed in my head.

“Why now? Why is Charles back… after five years?”

He was afraid. But he stood firm. For me.For his father. For this moment. My voice came out soft and trembling.“I will take the fourth path.”Gasps erupted around the chamber. The healers froze where they stood. The King’s eyes widened, filling with grief and gratitude at the same time.Charles stepped back as if the words had struck him physically.“No,” he whispered, almost breathless. “Anne, you said you would not sacrifice y

Yet I lay awake staring at the ceiling, counting my breaths the way doctors do to steady trembling hands. My heart had never listened to such logic. If I save the King, I risk losing Charles to death. If I save Charles, his father dies.If I save both, I lose my memories of him.Every laugh. Chapter 23A Choice With No EscapeAnne POVI gasped when my eyes flew open. The chamber burst back around me like a world rebuilt. The Alpha King lay breathing on the bed, his pulse faint but steady. Charles staggered beside me, one hand gripping the headboard to stay upright. Sweat clung to his forehead and shadows bruised the space beneath his eyes.We were back.Alive.But my heart felt like a torn page.I remembered every word the Seer spoke. Every path. Every price. Every thread I might have to cut.Charles looked at me the moment he regained balance. His voice was hoarse, stripped raw.“Do not choose that option. Do you hear me?”I swallowed hard, unable to answer. The pendant he gave me still rested in my palm, warm like living metal. Like his heartbeat made solid. The Alpha King opened his eyes weakly. “You saw her.”“Yes,” I whispered.“Did she give you the answer you needed?”A tremor ran through my body. “She gave four answers. There was no ground beneath me, no ceiling above me, nothing to grasp but Charles’s hand in mine. His grip was the only real thing in the collapsing world of smoke and broken magic. My heart battered my ribs. The rush of wind roared in my ears. I could not breathe. Chapter 21The Thread that BindsAnne POVNight came quietly, too quietly, like the world was holding its breath. The palace torches burned low, their flames swaying lazily in the dim corridors while wolves moved like shadows across stone. I could hear their soft footsteps, their quiet murmurs, the tension in every voice.Something was shifting in the air. A stirring. A warning.Charles stood at the balcony overlooking the courtyard. The moonlight traced his silhouette, sharp shoulders, strong stance, unmoving like a guardian carved from night. I waited at the doorway, unsure whether to approach or leave him with his thoughts. He must have sensed me, because he spoke without turning.“You are afraid.”I swallowed softly. “Should I lie?”“No,” he replied. “I prefer truth.”I walked forward, slow steps, the stone cold under my feet. Chapter 20The Price of LightAnne POVSilence filled the Alpha King’s chamber. It spread slowly through the room like a dark cloud. Charles stared at me without breathing. His jaw tightened once, just once, but it was enough. I had seen that look before. The moment before a wolf either breaks or fights.I wished I was wrong. I wished I had read the curse wrong. But my body did not lie, and neither did my magic. The second heartbeat. The second soul. The connection was real. I could feel it even now, like a thread running through my veins and into his.Charles.His father’s life was tied to his.I swallowed hard. “Charles. It feels like it will collapse if I pull too fast.”He stared at me for
