LOGINDrake's Pov
I stared at Nick for a long moment, trying to read beneath his tone. His face gave away nothing, that usual smirk playing on his lips, but his eyes—those were watching me closely.
“I’m not interested in your sister,” I finally said. “She’s just… daring.”
Nick let out a laugh, sharp and knowing. “Right. Daring. That’s one word for it.”
“She’s got bitten,” I added, leaning back against the bench, hoping to end the conversation.
“Let me guess,” Nick grinned, “she hit you with one of her speeches? Something about not making me feel like a slave or something?”
I furrowed my brows. “What are you talking about?”
“My mum said she was upset last night,” Nick explained, stretching his legs. “Because I left dinner to attend to the pack. She said it was typical, me running after you. Betsy told her she didn't know that's how they treat Alphas. And she's tired of everyone treating you like royalty just because you’re the Alpha.”
I blinked. “She said that?”
“Oh yeah,” he nodded. “As far as Betsy’s concerned, there’s nothing she can’t handle or isn’t entitled to. Girl’s been like that since she was born. I can't stand her sometimes, but I love her and it's one of the reasons I can trust her on her own. She’ll speak her mind, whether or not it gets her in trouble.”
“She’s bold,” I muttered, mostly to myself.
Nick glanced at me again. “I’m guessing she stuck up to your face? I apologize for that.”
I smirked. “Far from it. I don’t think she even cares that I'm the Alpha.”
Nick laughed harder. “Well you show her who's boss. I mean, you barely take it easy on these girls. Why do that for Betsy? And don't tell me it's because she's my sister.”
I didn't know what to say. Betsy had my tongue tied. I still needed to figure out how she could cure my color blindness when she's around. What if I kept her forever?
But I tried to bury that thought deep, especially here with Nick sitting next to me. I wasn’t about to spill that his sister stirred something in me that no other girl had. Not the random flings, not the confident she-wolves throwing themselves at me… none of them.
Betsy was just… different.
Nick tossed his towel aside and stood up. “Come on. Let’s get back to practice.”
I nodded and got to my feet, but my mind wasn’t on the game.
It was on her.
The way she didn’t stutter when talking back. The way her chin lifted just slightly when she was annoyed. And damn it, the way her hoodie clung to her like a second skin this morning. The way she challenged me, straight in the eye.
It wasn’t just her attitude.
It was what she made me feel.
The colors. I could see them around her just clearly.
I was starting to wonder… What if she wasn’t just someone I found daring?
What if she was more?
But I pushed the thought aside. That wasn’t part of the plan. I had responsibilities. An image. An entire pack depending on me.
Still…
I couldn’t help but wonder how her lips would taste. How long it would take to break down that hard shell and get her under my control. Not in the forceful way, but in the way my wolf wanted. To mark her. Claim her. Keep her.
Because something about her drew me in, and no matter how hard I tried to act unbothered, the pull was there.
But Nick… he was still my best friend. And as much as I outranked him, I respected him.
Which meant, if I ever wanted her… I’d have to go through him first.
Back to the ice, the cold breeze whipping against my skin as I gripped my stick tighter. This time, I didn’t hold back.
Every pass, every block, every shot—I gave it my all. Mercilessly.
The ice beneath my skates didn’t slow me down. My thoughts stayed buried under the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
Nick skated up beside me after I scored another shot past the goalie, panting but laughing. “And that right there is why you’re the Alpha.”
I smirked, catching my breath. “I’ve always competed against you since we were pups and you've been as good as I was. That hasn’t changed.”
“Yeah,” Nick chuckled, bumping my shoulder. “And that’s why I’m your beta. The only one crazy enough to keep up with you.”
“My only trusted companion,” I said genuinely. “Loyal as hell, too.”
Nick grinned, but his face shifted into something more serious as he leaned on his stick. “Just make sure you get yourself a mate who can rule beside you. Someone who’s strong, grounded… or I’ll be disappointed.”
I went quiet for a moment. My gaze dropped to the ice, then flicked back up to his.
“Are you thinking about Shea?” I asked.
His expression softened. “Yeah. She’s out of town, visiting her aunt, but she’ll be back next week.”
“You guys don't seem like you're dating. Are you sure she's still yours?”
“Always,” he nodded.
I let that sit for a beat, then said, “Bring her when she returns. And bring Betsy too.”
Nick raised a brow. “Why?”
“Why? Well, I command it.”
Nick chuckled. “Seriously? You sound so casual, I can't figure out if you actually mean that or it's just one of your jokes.”
“She needs to see more than what Sierra and Caroline are feeding her. You sold her out, I'm saving her,” I said plainly. “She has no idea what it really means to be in the pack. And you haven't told her anything.”
“I told you. She'd rather prefer to remain low-key as she used to be.”
“Well, I'm your Alpha.”
“You really are invested in my sister,” Nick muttered under his breath, eyeing me sideways.
I didn’t flinch. “Isn’t it better that I look out for my pack members as their Alpha?”
“She hasn’t been officially welcomed,” I added, “She’s one of us, yes. But she doesn’t act like it.”
“She's not going to turn even if you want her to.”
“Why not? How would she find a mate if she doesn't connect with her wolf??” I asked, my tone laced with pressure.
Drake's POVMy chest kept rising and falling steadily as I observed Matteo, not from exhaustion but from the tension that wouldn't stop.He moved back immediately. Still, something about it did not strike me as withdrawal. It also did not seem to be defeat. If for anything… it struck me as something premeditated. He was far too composed for someone who had just been challenged. For someone who had just been tested like Betsy had, he was far too cool.I narrowed my eyes slightly as I looked at him closely.I watched his every movement, the way he looked at her. It looked suspicious to me.He could not even fool me, not for one second.People like Matteo only backed off if they had something else in mind. And right now, I could sense it.He was not quite done yet that I was very sure of.“The way you are stepping back, are you sure you don’t want to leave now?” I asked slowly, my voice cool as I stared at him. “Are you ready to leave now?” I repeated the question. He looked at me fo
Betsy's POVMy heart was beating so rapidly that I believed I could hear it in my ears.Between Matteo and myself, I stood there facing him, none of us wanted to be the bigger person and let go.I could let this go on much longer without feeling tired one bit.I was stronger now, I was not the same frail girl he knew any longer. My wolf was agitated within me. She was growled and paced all around. She was ready to move and act immediately but it wasn't like before when I acted wild and erratic.Drake was behind me, his presence was constant and powerful, with him standing there, I felt like I could take on the world.I didn't need a soothsayer to inform me he was watching and prepared to step in if matters turned wrong. That alone inspired me to continue.I stayed firm even when a little degree of fear was slowly trying to creep in but I stood my ground.Unlike before when I came across him, goosebumps from nowhere filled my body and i would begin to tremble, but now, his presence an
Drake's POVMy heart was thumping violently in my chest, not from dread, but from what I saw unfold directly in front of me.Betsy was standing there, standing up for herself. As she talked to Matteo, she appeared very assured, resolute, and strong. My eyes could not believe what they were witnessing. I used my hands to wipe my face to be sure I was seeing correctly. The same Betsy who a few months ago could not stand up for herself now stood in front of Matteo without fear.Had Betsy been in such circumstances, the regular Betsy would have wept but that had altered.Deep down, I was incredibly proud of how strong she had grown and how she could now defend herself. But the most startling aspect of seeing her was witnessing her manage her abilities, she had been making improvements in that part.Earlier this week, during an argument she had lost control and it drained her of her energy right when she was trying to defend Harmony from Vivian’s clutches. Watching her fight it now, I coul
Betsy's POVIn my chest, my heart was racing uncontrollably, how could he appear here to claim someone he could not have, that was the height of his stupidity. My hold on Drake's hand weakened gradually.Matteo took another step again, his eyes never left mine, yet his expression remained disdainful. On his face, he still retained that composed demeanor, which gave the entire affair a different feel.I was nearly overwhelmed by a wave of terror right away, but I couldn't allow him to see it.I stood my ground, he wasn't to know that his presence still had some sort of effect on me.Even my self-assurance improved when Drake moved closer and stood next to me. With him being there, I knew he wouldn't allow Matteo to hurt me at all and Matteo wouldn’t even dare try such.Feeling that surge of confidence, I drew closer to drake and squeezed his hands tightly.“I am your mate and that's how it was meant to be,” Matteo repeated.“You cannot conquer fate”, he said, a grin on his face.“It is
Betsy's POVI stayed still, I didn’t even move an inch. The tension in the air was unbearable. It was nearly visible, not only felt. Thick and hard. It was simultaneously pinning all of us.Drake stayed put also. Like a shield I hadn't asked for but urgently needed, he stood strong in front of me, his body separating me from Matteo.Still… I did back away. Rather, I hung around.I was closer to him now than before. Near enough to feel his body's warmth. Slowly, I turned my attention toward his face. I could see it even from the side. The rage in his eyes. But below that, there was something else.He was holding it within because of me. My chest stiffened a bit as I came to that understanding. Then my attention returned to Matteo. He had remained still.“I'm not leaving,” Matteo said. His voice broke through the thick silence.“Not until she says yes to hearing me.”My heart leaped. As his words sank in, my fingers curled at my sides. My mind whirled once more, I swallowed hard and ev
Betsy's POVMy footsteps ended abruptly when I saw him.Matteo. Standing just there. Inside the Lanemoon pack.My mind resisted it for a second. It felt unreal, like I was seeing something that wasn’t there. My eyes remained glued on him, expecting him to vanish, but nothing happened. What is he actually doing here?As I began to walk slowly toward him, that question echoed in my head.Every step felt like my body was unsure of whether to go to him or back down. I pushed myself to keep going.I wanted answers.“Matteo… what are you doing here?” I asked. My voice was steady even if I could sense the tension building within me when I got close enough. He shifted his head slowly, as though he had already seen me long before I uttered a word. Our eyes met. And something about the look in his eyes caused my stomach to flip.It wasn't a surprise. It was absolute certainty. Like he had wanted this moment to happen. Like he had been waiting for me.Just this made my anxiety more intense.“Thi
Betsy’s POVI woke up the following morning feeling somewhat better than I had been the day before. Not really excellent but I felt a lot better. The feeling of weakness had lessened, but it had not vanished entirely. But the faint feeling there served as a memory of what had transpired.Slowly, I
Betsy's POVI was utterly tired by the time we returned home that day.Not only tired, but my thoughts were also more sluggish than normal, and my body hurt in a way I couldn't completely justify. I could not process anything from earlier; everything kept spinning around in my head.I walked slowl
Betsy’s POVAfter Drake settled next to me, I remained silent for some time.My body still felt weak, as if all the strength in me had been taken. Lifting even my hand seemed challenging. Still, that wasn't what was most troubling me.It was everything that had just unfolded.Matteo. The crowd. The
Drake’s POVI didn’t want to keep her there any longer. She needed more attention.I assisted her to sit up gently, encircling one arm around her to support her weight. She leaned on me, which alone showed me how tired she was.“I'm taking you to the sick bay,” I said to her.She made no objections
