I pressed Confirm.

The words Royal Court Direct Commander Program turned gray. A new line appeared beneath them.

Your place has been confirmed. Reporting instructions will follow separately.

Lucas pushed open the door just as I closed my laptop.

“Finished applying?”

He set an iced Americano beside Mia. His other hand came to rest naturally on the back of her chair.

This apartment belonged to Lucas and me, yet Mia’s slippers now sat in the entryway. Her mug had appeared in our kitchen. Even the cushions on the sofa had been replaced with the pale yellow ones she liked.

“I’m finished,” I said.

Lucas visibly relaxed. “I asked about late transfers into the Western Camp. With your scores, it shouldn’t be a problem. Check everyone’s missing documents tonight so nothing delays registration.”

He did not ask which camp I had chosen.

As far as he was concerned, whatever I put on the form, I would eventually follow him.

Mia held her coffee in both hands. “Erin, I’m still missing a recommendation letter. Could you ask one of the elders for me?”

Caleb held out his phone. “And housing. You researched the places near the Western Camp, right? Mia’s a light sleeper. Find somewhere quiet.”

“Not too far from the training grounds,” Jace added. “She hasn’t been well. A long commute every day will wear her out.”

Six months ago, when I first showed them my comparison chart for the four camps, none of them had even finished reading it. Caleb said I had listed the courses, housing, and weather in ridiculous detail. Lucas told me there was no point worrying so early. We could arrange everything after we arrived.

Now they had considered even the distance Mia would have to walk each morning.

“I deleted the housing spreadsheet,” I said.

The living room fell silent.

Caleb frowned. “You spent several nights making that. Why delete it?”

“I don’t need it anymore.”

Lucas’s expression darkened. “Erin, if you’re angry, take it out on me. Don’t interfere with everyone’s registration.”

Mia hurriedly raised her hands. “It’s fine. I can research it myself. I’m just not as thorough as Erin, so it might take me longer.”

“Stop blaming yourself for everything.” Lucas patted her shoulder, then looked at me. “She worked hard to earn her place. Even if you dislike our decision, you don’t need to make things difficult for her.”

My throat tightened.

When my mother died, the three of them walked out of the cemetery with me. I had clutched her necklace and refused to go home. Lucas crouched in front of me and took my hand.

“I’ll protect you from now on. When I become Alpha, you’ll be my Luna. My home will always be yours.”

Caleb held my other hand. “Come to me whenever you need something. Even if you can’t ask, I’ll still come.”

Jace stood between me and the wind. “No one gets to leave you behind. The four of us stay together. Always.”

Once, they had kept those promises.

On my first birthday after losing Mom, they arrived at my door with a cake. On every full-moon run, Lucas slowed down so I could keep pace. The night the Moon Goddess revealed that we were fated mates, he held me and laughed with more happiness than I felt.

“See? I chose right when we were children.”

That was why I had tried so hard to care for them in return.

Lucas was allergic to peanuts, so I checked restaurant ingredients before every meal. Caleb always forgot things, so my bag held a charger and spare keys. Jace’s blood sugar dropped after training, so I carried candy.

Back then, all four of us did small things for one another.

I never imagined that one day they would complain that I worried too much, then expect me to take perfect care of another girl.

Mia set down her coffee and stood. “Please don’t be angry, Erin. I’ll treat everyone to dinner tonight. We can celebrate going to the Western Camp together.”

Lucas picked up my coat. “Come on. Don’t spoil the evening.”

I did not take it. “I’m not going.”

He watched me for a few seconds, then put the coat back. “Fine. Come find us when you’ve thought it through.”

The four of them left, laughing and talking.

No one looked back.

My phone vibrated. The Royal Court had sent another notice.

Your reporting location and travel arrangements are classified and must not be disclosed to unauthorized persons.

I closed the message and opened the shared planning file I had maintained for seven years.

In the beginning, it had included my birthday, my training schedule, and all the places we promised to visit together. Over the years, almost everything about me had disappeared. What remained was page after page of their lives.

I selected the file and pressed Delete.

This time, I would plan only my own future.

One year later, I was formally appointed to the Royal Court Command Center. My new quarters were not large, but they had a window facing south.I adopted a cat—a calico I found outside the base wall.Ethan said her temperament resembled mine. Most of the time she was quiet, but if someone pushed her too far, one swipe could draw blood.I named her Clover.I no longer needed a perfect ending.A little luck that belonged entirely to me was enough.Caleb and Jace emailed me later. They had completed their first year at the Western Camp. Caleb had learned to manage accounts and schedules. Jace no longer waited for someone else to remind him about examinations for his old injury. They did not ask me to return. At the end of the email, they wrote only one sentence. We were bastards for treating everything you did as something we were entitled to.I did not reply. But I no longer hated them.Lucas suspended his Alpha-heir training for six months. His mother said he spent most of his time in t

After the ceremony, Lucas’s mother waited outside the reception room. She held the moonstone bracelet in both hands, her smile strained.“Erin, I made a foolish decision. Mia returned the bracelet. It was always meant for you.”She reached for my wrist.I stepped back. “I don’t want it.”“You’re still angry?” She sighed. “You have always taken things too deeply. Lucas knows he was wrong. Give him a chance. You cannot discard more than twenty years as if they meant nothing.”I looked at the bracelet. As a child, I had dreamed about it more than once. I imagined her fastening it around my wrist and smiling as she called me her future Luna.Only after it had rested on Mia’s arm did I understand that I had never wanted a piece of jewelry.I wanted someone to stand before the entire pack and say, without hesitation, that my place belonged only to me.Lucas’s mother could not give me that certainty.Neither could Lucas.“Keep it,” I said. “Whoever you give it to next has nothing to do with m

When the six-month closed-training period ended, my former pack invited me back for its annual commendation ceremony. The project I had joined remained classified. My public introduction contained only one line.Member of the Royal Court Direct Commander Program.Ethan and two other Court officers accompanied me.At the entrance to the council hall, the elder responsible for academy affairs came out to welcome us personally.“Erin, we have finally managed to bring you home.”“There’s no need to be so formal, Elder.”“There certainly is.” He lowered his voice. “The border emergency system your team designed has passed final inspection. You brought great honor to the pack.”As he finished speaking, I saw Lucas. He stood below the steps and looked thinner than before. Caleb and Jace were beside him.The three of them watched me in silence. At last, Caleb forced a crooked smile. “You’re impressive now, Erin.”I nodded. “I’m doing all right.”Jace held out a document envelope. “It contains

Without me, Lucas, Caleb, Jace, and Mia still went to the Western Camp.Life there was not as easy as they had expected. No one consolidated their housing paperwork, so the quiet cottage they wanted was reserved by another team. The four of them had to stay in a hotel outside camp and commute almost two hours every day.For the first time, Caleb prepared his own registration forms. At two in the morning, after discovering that he had omitted two equipment certificates, he pushed his laptop away.“How did Erin finish all this?”Jace was checking the documents for his old injury and did not look up. “Stop talking about her.”“I said one thing.”“You’ve said her name eight times today.”Lucas sat on the balcony, calling me again. No answer.Since the mate bond broke, he often woke abruptly in the middle of the night. No matter how far apart we had once been, he could sense that I existed somewhere in the world. Now there was only emptiness.Mia placed a glass of water beside him. “Lucas,

  • My Alpha Thought I’d Always Follow   Chapter 6

On my seventh day at the Royal Court base, I faced my first assessment.Twelve candidates formed a temporary unit. We had six hours to complete a border-defense exercise: plan patrol routes, identify gaps that rogue wolves might use to enter the territory, and guide a supply convoy safely into a mountain valley after communications failed. Our team leader, Ethan Cole, scanned the risk assessment I had prepared. His eyebrows rose. “Twenty-seven contingency plans?”“For unexpected situations.”“This is the first assessment, not the final defense of the realm.”Someone nearby laughed. “You prepared as if an entire pack might have to evacuate overnight.”My fingers paused.I had heard versions of that joke too many times. Lucas used to say that I planned every detail and exhausted myself for no reason.I closed the file. “Fine. We’ll begin with the standard plan.”Two hours later, the main communication channel went dead. The examiners remotely disabled the drones surveying our route. Then

Once the vehicle had crossed the border, I switched off my phone and placed it inside the security pouch. The Royal Court officer sealed it. “No private contact with the outside world for six months.”“Understood.”In the rearview mirror, the territory where I had spent more than twenty years grew smaller and smaller. I watched until it vanished completely, then turned away. When the call ended, Lucas was still standing outside the barbecue restaurant. The pain of the broken mate bond ripped through his chest. He made a strangled sound, bent over against the wall, and dropped his phone onto the pavement.Caleb’s expression changed. “Lucas, what happened?”Lucas did not answer. He pressed a hand over his heart, cold sweat appearing across his forehead. The pull that had existed since the Moon Goddess revealed us as fated mates was gone.Completely gone.Nothing remained.Jace understood first. “Erin rejected the bond?”Lucas snatched up his phone and called me again. It was turned off.
