Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
The next morning, cold sunlight stabbed into the bedroom.

I opened the wardrobe and laid a large suitcase flat on the carpet.

I pulled out a deep gray, custom-tailored suit. I had flown to Milan to have it made for him the day he became Alpha. Now it was crammed in the back of the closet, covered in dust.

I tossed it into a trash bag.

Next to it hung a flashy, studded jacket. The one he bought because Chloe thought it was “cool.”

I took it down and hung it in the most obvious spot. A little gift for him to use to please his new favorite.

Suddenly, the lock on the front door clicked.

Ryker strode into the bedroom.

His scent had changed. The cold, cedarwood scent of his Alpha self was gone.

In its place was the sweet, cloying scent of a young Omega.

He saw me and stopped dead in his tracks.

“Morning.” His eyes darted away as he started explaining. “Night patrol ran late. Chloe’s a newly awakened wolf. Her power is unstable, and her wolf was completely exhausted. I stayed in the pack guest house to calm her wolf.”

I didn’t ask a single question. But he was already defensive.

I turned back to my suitcase, stuffing a sweater inside. “Right.”

He glanced at the suitcase on the floor. The tight line of his jaw instantly relaxed.

“You’re going on a trip?” He walked over, his voice filled with obvious relief. “A medical conference?”

He didn’t even ask where I was going. Or for how long.

“Yes,” I said, not looking up.

“A few days away will be good for you.” He actually smiled, like a huge weight had been lifted. “You’ve been so tense lately. Go clear your head. I’ll handle things in the pack.”

He walked straight to the safe in the study.

Beep, beep. The lock opened.

He took a black velvet box from the very back and quickly stuffed it into his coat pocket.

“I have to get back to the training grounds,” he said, returning to my side. He leaned down to kiss me.

I turned my head. His lips brushed my cheek.

The sickeningly sweet Omega scent filled my nose. It made me want to gag.

“I’ll call you tonight after I’m done,” he said, completely oblivious to my disgust. He turned and rushed downstairs.

Bang.

The front door slammed shut.

The vibration traveled through the walls.

The portrait of us that had hung on the wall for a year suddenly tilted and crashed to the floor.

The frame shattered. Glass sprayed everywhere.

A famous artist had painted it for us.

In the painting, Ryker was kissing my forehead, his eyes full of devotion.

I walked over, stepping carefully around the shards of glass.

I picked up the sharpest piece and sliced the canvas open. I ripped the painting, that symbol of our fake love, right out of the frame.

The fire in the hearth was blazing.

I walked over and tossed the canvas into the flames.

The fire devoured the loving face of the man in the painting.

I watched it curl, blacken, and turn to ash. The last shred of my affection burned away with it.

That evening, a frantic mind-link exploded in my head.

It was my best friend, Maya.

“Aurora! Did you see the pack social feed?! I’m going to rip Ryker’s and that bitch’s throats out!” Maya’s roar made my head ache.

I walked to the sofa and opened the pack app.

Chloe’s post was at the top of the feed.

The caption read: “Made it through my first full moon since awakening! Thank you, Alpha, for the special protection and the surprise. Moonstone is so beautiful. I’ll treasure it forever!”

The picture was a selfie.

Around her delicate neck hung a brilliant, wolf-shaped moonstone pendant.

And there, on her collarbone, tucked into the corner of the photo, was the black velvet box.

The same box Ryker had snatched from the safe that morning.

My heart seized, but then it went numb again.

Moonstone. The tears of the Moon Goddess, according to werewolf legend.

In our world, it was the ultimate token an Alpha could only give to his destined Luna. It represented eternal loyalty and singular love.

A year ago, at our bonding ceremony, Ryker had whispered in my ear that he would find the world’s greatest craftsman to forge a one-of-a-kind moonstone pendant just for me.

I had waited a year.

Now, he had given it to another woman. A gift to celebrate her first full moon.

Maya was shaking with rage in our mind-link, her words tumbling out. “How dare he give the symbol of an eternal mate to another woman?! Aurora, use your mate-bond! Report him to the Elders! Take that necklace back!”

“Maya, calm down,” I said, my voice flat as I stared at the screen.

“Calm down? He’s trampled all over your dignity! The whole pack is laughing at you!”

“He can give it to her,” I said, picking up my coffee. “Because our final mating ceremony was never completed. Legally, I’m not his true Luna yet.”

Maya froze. The only sound in the link was her ragged breathing. “What? You’re just going to let her have it?”

“I don’t want it anymore.” I walked to my suitcase and snapped the locks shut.

The sharp click echoed in the room.

“I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“Leaving? Where are you going?”

“The Neutral Territories. The Healers’ Coalition.”

The other end of the link went dead silent. Ten seconds passed before Maya’s trembling voice returned. “Does… does Ryker know?”

“He doesn’t,” I said, pulling up the handle on my suitcase. “And I’m not going to tell him.”

I cut the mind-link.

My phone screen was still lit up, showing Chloe’s triumphant photo.

Looking at the moonstone pendant that should have been mine, I could only find it laughable.

I opened the comments and typed.

“Congratulations.”

I hit send. Then I turned off the screen and threw the phone in my bag.

Consider it my parting ‘blessing’ for them.

I didn’t answer him.I turned, pushed open the heavy door to my building, and shut the sound of the rain and his ragged breathing outside.“Aurora!” he yelled after me, his voice hoarse and broken. “I’ll be back tomorrow!”I didn’t slow my pace.“Do whatever you want,” I said, not looking back. “I’ve already moved on.”The door closed behind me with a heavy thud.A moment later, a howl tore through the night. It was the agonized cry of an Alpha who has lost his mate. Desperate. Broken. It echoed through the alley, raw and piercing.I stood inside, listening as the sound faded into the storm.I felt nothing.Just a quiet finality. That chapter was finally closed.Another month passed.Spring came to Sanctuary Valley in a rush. Overnight, the cherry trees lining the streets burst into bloom.I sat in my new clinic at the Healers' Coalition, signing the last of my paperwork.“Congratulations, Aurora,” the Coalition director said, smiling as he pushed the official seal toward me. “Your lic

The rain didn’t stop.Another month passed.Every day after work, I saw him.Standing under that same streetlight, like a forgotten statue. Rain or shine. He didn’t dare come to my door. He knew the rules of the neutral zone. An Alpha trespassing on another’s territory would be exiled, maybe even banned for life.So he just stood there.Breathing in the faint trace of my scent on the air like it was the only thing keeping him alive.Tonight, I worked a late shift. It was two in the morning when I dragged my tired body home.I turned into the alley. And saw him.His face was pale, his lips blue. He was shivering uncontrollably.A werewolf’s healing factor is powerful. We don't get cold like that. He was deep into hypothermia.I stopped. He was clutching a paper cup to his chest, guarding it like it was a priceless treasure.“Ryker.”My voice cut through the rain. His head snapped up, his eyes flaring with a sudden light.“Aurora…” His voice was a raw whisper. “I… I brought you hot choco

Rain hammered against my umbrella.I was walking home from the medical center when I turned into the alley by my apartment building and stopped dead.A figure stood frozen under a streetlight.Soaked to the bone. Like a dead tree left in a storm. It was Ryker. My breath hitched, then returned to normal. He was so much thinner. His cheekbones jutted out, his eyes were sunken. His powerful Alpha aura was almost gone. He’d suppressed it on purpose. The neutral territory guards would never let a ruling Alpha enter with his power on display. He’d made himself as small as a stray. He was holding a bouquet of wildflowers. Moonpetals. They were battered by the rain, their petals splattered with mud.The flower of forgiveness.“Aurora.” His voice trembled, on the verge of breaking.I didn’t stop. I walked right toward him.“What are you doing here,” I said flatly. The way you’d speak to a stranger.“I…” He swallowed hard. “I needed to see you.”Rain streamed down his jaw. I couldn’t tell if it

A coffee cup clinked on the tabletop.“Luna.”A man’s voice. Behind me. It carried the unmistakable scent of an Iron Ridge Beta.I turned.Marcus. Ryker’s Beta.He was in street clothes, trying to look like a civilian. But he couldn’t hide the aura of a pack warrior.A few lone wolves in the ‘Dark Moon’ café glanced up at him before quickly looking away. This was the Old Quarter of Sanctuary Valley. Pack politics weren’t welcome here.“Don't call me that,” I said. I didn’t invite him to sit. “You’re crossing a line.”“I know.” Marcus looked uncomfortable, like he was on a mission he didn’t believe in. “I’m just here to deliver something.”He pulled a long, thin tube from inside his coat and placed it on the table.“It’s from Ryker.”I stared at the tube, not moving. It had been a month.I thought I was over it. But seeing that tube made my chest tighten. Not with longing. With annoyance.“How is he?” I asked casually, like I was asking about a stranger.Marcus’s expression stiffened. H

The moment the plane landed, I turned on my phone. My screen blew up.47 missed calls. All from Ryker.99+ texts. Each one a testament to how insane he’d gone in the few hours I’d been away. Then, without warning, the mental link between us ripped open.Aurora! Why won’t you answer me!Ryker’s voice crawled out from some dark abyss. It was raw. Broken. It held the edge of an Alpha about to go feral.I dragged my suitcase through the arrivals hall of the Sanctuary Valley airport. The cool night air hit my face. It smelled of freedom. The scent of neutral territory, belonging to no pack.My phone buzzed again.I stared at his name on the screen. My thumb hovered for a second before I answered.“Which airport are you at?!” he demanded, his voice thick with a panic he couldn't hide. “Give me your coordinates. I’ll send someone for you now!”I could feel his Alpha authority, even through the phone. He was trying to command me. To drag me back.I laughed. This time, his command was nothing.

Ten o’clock at night. The villa’s front door opened.Ryker walked in, bringing a chill of night air with him.He took off his jacket, his eyes automatically flicking to the space above the fireplace. He froze.“Where’s the painting?” His voice was tight, a clear note of panic in it.I sat on the sofa, turning a page in my book.“It fell this afternoon. The glass broke.” I didn’t even look up. My voice was bland. “The canvas got dirty, so I put it away.”Ryker stared at me for two seconds. When he saw no anger on my face, he let out a long, relieved breath.“I’ll have the artist paint a new one. A bigger one.”He came and sat beside me, pulling a long, elegant velvet box from his pocket.“To make up for it.” He opened the box.It was a moonstone bracelet. While it was moonstone, its luster and quality were nowhere near Chloe’s necklace. Her pendant was a masterpiece. The wolf carving was lifelike. The work of a master. A symbol of true favor. The bracelet in my hand was a cheap, mass-pr
