Chapter 4

Author: Peachy
Ten o’clock at night.

The villa’s front door opened.

Ryker walked in, bringing a chill of night air with him.

He took off his jacket, his eyes automatically flicking to the space above the fireplace.

He froze.

“Where’s the painting?” His voice was tight, a clear note of panic in it.

I sat on the sofa, turning a page in my book.

“It fell this afternoon. The glass broke.” I didn’t even look up. My voice was bland. “The canvas got dirty, so I put it away.”

Ryker stared at me for two seconds.

When he saw no anger on my face, he let out a long, relieved breath.

“I’ll have the artist paint a new one. A bigger one.”

He came and sat beside me, pulling a long, elegant velvet box from his pocket.

“To make up for it.” He opened the box.

It was a moonstone bracelet.

While it was moonstone, its luster and quality were nowhere near Chloe’s necklace. Her pendant was a masterpiece. The wolf carving was lifelike. The work of a master. A symbol of true favor. The bracelet in my hand was a cheap, mass-produced trinket you could find on any commercial street.

“Do you like it?” he asked with a smile, but his eyes held a clear, calculating glint.

I took the box and closed it.

“What do you want?”

He cleared his throat, a pathetic attempt to hide his guilt.

“There’s an open seat on the pack council next month,” he said, his tone taking my approval for granted. “Chloe just awakened. Her wolf is unstable, and she feels very insecure. She needs to join the pack leadership to gain some recognition. You’re already the Head Healer. Give the spot to her.”

I just looked at him.

I had pulled three all-nighters organizing the pack’s medical archives to earn that spot.

He didn’t even bother to ask before offering it up to impress someone else.

“Okay,” I agreed without a fight.

Ryker blinked.

He had clearly prepared a whole speech to pacify me. He was probably even ready for a huge fight.

My compliance made him ecstatic.

“Aurora, I knew you were the most understanding!”

He grabbed my hand, his voice thick with excitement. “Tomorrow morning! Ten o’clock, at the sacred site! I’ve already told the Head Elder. I will not postpone it this time. We are going to complete our final mating ceremony!”

Ten o’clock?

I looked into his earnest eyes and wanted to laugh.

BZZZZT—!

The dedicated distress signal exploded in my mind, right on cue.

“Ryker… it hurts… my power is turning on me… save me!”

Chloe’s voice was shrill, laced with a deadly dependence.

Ryker’s smile froze on his face.

He shot to his feet, the hand holding mine dropping in an instant.

“Chloe’s wolf is going feral!” His face was a mask of anxiety. “I have to go!”

“Go,” I said, nodding calmly.

“Tomorrow! Ten o’clock! See you at the site!” He didn’t offer a single other excuse before bolting into the night.

I watched him go, then took the box with the cheap moonstone bracelet upstairs.

On my vanity lay two identical, cheap bracelets. Every time he abandoned me for Chloe, he would try to buy me off with one of these worthless trinkets. His apology was as cheap as his promise.

I tossed the third bracelet onto the pile. They clattered together with a cheap, hollow sound.

The next day.

I rolled my suitcase out of the villa and headed for the airport.

As the car pulled away, I watched the Iron Ridge Pack territory shrink in the rearview mirror. I felt nothing.

When the time for our mating ceremony arrived, I was sitting in the airport departure lounge.

No calls. No texts. No mind-links.

My mate had disappeared for another woman again. Right at the moment of our final bonding.

I wasn’t surprised at all.

Finally, just as the airport announcer called my flight for boarding, a message belatedly echoed in my mind.

It was Ryker.

“Aurora, I’m sorry.”

He sounded exhausted, but not panicked. He was sure I was still waiting for him like a good little mate.

“Chloe’s in bad shape. Her wolf is rejecting her body. She’s trying to tear herself apart and won’t let go of me. I really can’t get away.”

The 18th time.

“The ceremony will have to be postponed one more time,” he promised, his tone dripping with condescension. “I swear, the moment you get back from your trip, we’ll complete the ceremony.”

I stood up and grabbed my suitcase.

For the first and last time, I answered him in a voice as cold as ice.

“Don’t bother, Ryker.”

There was a pause on the other end of the link.

“What the hell is wrong with you? I told you I’d wait—”

“I stepped down as Head Healer,” I cut him off. “And this isn't a trip. I'm moving to the Neutral Territories. I’m boarding now. We're done, Ryker. You're free. Go play Alpha with her.”

I was about to sever our mind-link for good, to turn off my phone forever.

And then his voice exploded in my head, screaming my name.

Over and over again.

I didn’t answer him.I turned, pushed open the heavy door to my building, and shut the sound of the rain and his ragged breathing outside.“Aurora!” he yelled after me, his voice hoarse and broken. “I’ll be back tomorrow!”I didn’t slow my pace.“Do whatever you want,” I said, not looking back. “I’ve already moved on.”The door closed behind me with a heavy thud.A moment later, a howl tore through the night. It was the agonized cry of an Alpha who has lost his mate. Desperate. Broken. It echoed through the alley, raw and piercing.I stood inside, listening as the sound faded into the storm.I felt nothing.Just a quiet finality. That chapter was finally closed.Another month passed.Spring came to Sanctuary Valley in a rush. Overnight, the cherry trees lining the streets burst into bloom.I sat in my new clinic at the Healers' Coalition, signing the last of my paperwork.“Congratulations, Aurora,” the Coalition director said, smiling as he pushed the official seal toward me. “Your lic

The rain didn’t stop.Another month passed.Every day after work, I saw him.Standing under that same streetlight, like a forgotten statue. Rain or shine. He didn’t dare come to my door. He knew the rules of the neutral zone. An Alpha trespassing on another’s territory would be exiled, maybe even banned for life.So he just stood there.Breathing in the faint trace of my scent on the air like it was the only thing keeping him alive.Tonight, I worked a late shift. It was two in the morning when I dragged my tired body home.I turned into the alley. And saw him.His face was pale, his lips blue. He was shivering uncontrollably.A werewolf’s healing factor is powerful. We don't get cold like that. He was deep into hypothermia.I stopped. He was clutching a paper cup to his chest, guarding it like it was a priceless treasure.“Ryker.”My voice cut through the rain. His head snapped up, his eyes flaring with a sudden light.“Aurora…” His voice was a raw whisper. “I… I brought you hot choco

Rain hammered against my umbrella.I was walking home from the medical center when I turned into the alley by my apartment building and stopped dead.A figure stood frozen under a streetlight.Soaked to the bone. Like a dead tree left in a storm. It was Ryker. My breath hitched, then returned to normal. He was so much thinner. His cheekbones jutted out, his eyes were sunken. His powerful Alpha aura was almost gone. He’d suppressed it on purpose. The neutral territory guards would never let a ruling Alpha enter with his power on display. He’d made himself as small as a stray. He was holding a bouquet of wildflowers. Moonpetals. They were battered by the rain, their petals splattered with mud.The flower of forgiveness.“Aurora.” His voice trembled, on the verge of breaking.I didn’t stop. I walked right toward him.“What are you doing here,” I said flatly. The way you’d speak to a stranger.“I…” He swallowed hard. “I needed to see you.”Rain streamed down his jaw. I couldn’t tell if it

A coffee cup clinked on the tabletop.“Luna.”A man’s voice. Behind me. It carried the unmistakable scent of an Iron Ridge Beta.I turned.Marcus. Ryker’s Beta.He was in street clothes, trying to look like a civilian. But he couldn’t hide the aura of a pack warrior.A few lone wolves in the ‘Dark Moon’ café glanced up at him before quickly looking away. This was the Old Quarter of Sanctuary Valley. Pack politics weren’t welcome here.“Don't call me that,” I said. I didn’t invite him to sit. “You’re crossing a line.”“I know.” Marcus looked uncomfortable, like he was on a mission he didn’t believe in. “I’m just here to deliver something.”He pulled a long, thin tube from inside his coat and placed it on the table.“It’s from Ryker.”I stared at the tube, not moving. It had been a month.I thought I was over it. But seeing that tube made my chest tighten. Not with longing. With annoyance.“How is he?” I asked casually, like I was asking about a stranger.Marcus’s expression stiffened. H

The moment the plane landed, I turned on my phone. My screen blew up.47 missed calls. All from Ryker.99+ texts. Each one a testament to how insane he’d gone in the few hours I’d been away. Then, without warning, the mental link between us ripped open.Aurora! Why won’t you answer me!Ryker’s voice crawled out from some dark abyss. It was raw. Broken. It held the edge of an Alpha about to go feral.I dragged my suitcase through the arrivals hall of the Sanctuary Valley airport. The cool night air hit my face. It smelled of freedom. The scent of neutral territory, belonging to no pack.My phone buzzed again.I stared at his name on the screen. My thumb hovered for a second before I answered.“Which airport are you at?!” he demanded, his voice thick with a panic he couldn't hide. “Give me your coordinates. I’ll send someone for you now!”I could feel his Alpha authority, even through the phone. He was trying to command me. To drag me back.I laughed. This time, his command was nothing.
