Chapter 3

Author: Moonchaser
I sat on the slope facing the cabin, watching Kaelen and Lyra framed in the window. My mind drifted back to what he told me just two weeks ago.

"Something just happened at the mine our pack's been monitoring. I might not make it back in time for the festival."

Kaelen, who was usually so clingy, wore a look of regret. "Babe, you're going to the festival alone. I've never missed one. It just doesn't feel right."

I'd thought he truly felt guilty. I kissed him, smiling as I said, "It's alright. We've got plenty of time. As long as you want it, we can sneak away anytime for just the two of us."

The surprise I had prepared for Kaelen now served as a private hideaway for him and Lyra, as they tangled in the hot spring he'd once told me about.

When Brenna came back with the parchment, she turned my face away. "Don't look. It'll stain your soul."

She placed the parchment in front of me. "Look at this instead. It'll clear your head."

Lyra's portrait was drawn on the parchment. She was a newly promoted Gamma warrior who had met Kaelen during a Rogue sweep.

"She went after him," Brenna said, tapping the dossier. "There's a memory crystal. Watch it and you'll understand."

She placed the crystal in my palm. I poured power into it, and a scene unfolded—it was our anniversary last year. The pack's energy barrier had suddenly become unstable. Kaelen claimed he needed to repair it.

However, the patrol team's memory crystal had accidentally captured him and Lyra fooling around in my garden. Their breathless moans were tangled with Lyra's whispers.

"Kaelen, look closely. This is a blood oath sigil. Only top-tier warriors earn it. I'm not some Omega you can just toy with."

Lyra leaned over his shoulder and used a claw to carve a shallow mark across his chest, mirroring the sigil on her own. "I'm not a she-wolf you can buy off with resources. What I want is to be your only mate."

The scene was cut off.

I remembered the night Kaelen came back from fixing the barrier. He looked more worn than usual. I asked if something had happened, but he didn't answer. Instead, he pushed me down onto the bed and took me again and again.

When I was breathless and dazed, he guided my fingers across his chest.

The next morning, I saw the fresh claw mark on his chest and assumed I'd scratched him in the heat of the moment. I even felt guilty and sorry for him.

Kaelen just smiled, pinched my cheek, and said, "Every mark my little moon leaves is a badge of love."

It turned out it wasn't my mark at all. It was another she-wolf's challenge and claim.

Their secret affair had already begun long before I even realized it. So, all those excuses about pack duties were lies. He had actually been spending time with another she-wolf for the past year. Even the extra care he gave me was nothing but guilt after cheating.

It felt like my soul was torn apart. I watched the mate bond I had fought so hard to protect fall apart before my eyes. The love I was once so sure of had turned into a hollow ache, and my whole life felt like a cruel joke.

Sometimes, in the dead of night, I wondered if Kaelen ever laughed behind my back, amused by how easily he kept me wrapped around his finger.

As I stared at the tangled bodies in the cabin, I heard Brenna's voice beside me. "Just give the order, and I'll take a team in immediately. We'll drag them straight to the elders!"

I caught my reflection in Brenna's eyes, like a faint spark in the darkness I'd been drowning in. I held on to it as the realization finally sank in.

"I only want Kaelen and that bitch to pay the price," I said, looking her in the eye.

That night, Brenna and I sat on the hillside and snapped a photo with the cabin in the background. I posted it to my feed with the caption, "Thank you for being by my side all these ten years. You've always been there for me."

Right after Brenna hit the like button, Kaelen started reaching out to me through the mind-link.

I ignored it at first, watching him pace restlessly in front of the window. When he tried again, I finally answered.

I honestly hadn't expected this. Even for something as simple as the rejection ritual, Kaelen showed up late.I waited from morning into the afternoon. Just when I was sure he was pulling another stunt, he limped into view.He forced a bitter laugh, his voice rasping like it had scraped over stone. "Elara."Time seemed to freeze at that moment.I remembered the day we'd chosen to hold our bonding ceremony. He was late then too.I had berated him when he finally rushed in. Then, he pulled out a crown woven from moonlight flowers like a magician."I was picking these," he said. "The books say even a pack ceremony needs that sense of occasion."Bathed in moonlight, his smile had been soft as clouds, filling my chest until even my tears tasted sweet. He told me, "Elara, I just want to give you the best I'm capable of."We stood before the Moon Goddess statue with his hand locked around mine."From this day forward, whether in life or death, I will never be parted from Elara. "You lay a hand on me and I'll take it to the Council!" Lyra shouted.I had no interest in arguing with Lyra. I picked up our things and walked out with Brenna.Forcing Kaelen to agree to the ritual had gone far better than I expected. While sitting in the car, I stared at the silver dagger in my lap, still a little stunned.Kaelen and I had grown from pups into adults. We were each other's first love. I stood with him through the brutal pack politics until he secured his place as Alpha. None of it had been easy. Now, I handed our token of love—a wolf fang necklace—to the pack's blacksmith and watched it melt down into a pool of silver.I smiled at Brenna. "Feel like getting away? Maybe catch the sunrise on the snowcaps."…For half a month, Kaelen hadn't been able to reach me through the mind-link. It wasn't for lack of trying. Every time he reached out to me, his mind hit a void.He thought about coming to find me, but his pride kept him rooted. He assumed I was punishing hi

"That was the plan, wasn't it? He'd stand up for you and turn on me. The one who couldn't wait for me to make a scene was you, wasn't it?" I accused.Inside the crystal, the patrolman confessed everything in detail.Lyra's expression went stiff. When Kaelen looked at her in disbelief, she burst into tears and clutched his arm. "She's lying! Kaelen, I love you! Don't believe her! Please, don't!"The pity in his eyes was gone. I knew every look he had. After so many years together, I could read the disgust the instant it flickered. He shook her hands off his arm and asked coldly, "You promised me you wouldn't show yourself to her until I was ready. You gave me your word. Why didn't you keep it?"Kaelen's obsessive streak told me everything. He was choosing between us.Lyra sobbed, "I only did it because I love you so much. How is that wrong?"Hearing this, Kaelen seemed to make up his mind, and his eyes turned cold as he looked at Lyra. Then, he walked to me and tried to take my

"I'm not keeping a mate bond that's already been tainted," I said, looking at Kaelen's stunned expression."If you really love her, then make her your mate. Complete the rejection ritual with me before the Moon Goddess. Swear it on your Alpha's blood, and claim her as your new Luna. If you dare to do that, you'll still have my respect," I said coldly.Kaelen was stunned. I caught the flicker of delight on Lyra's face as she looked at Kaelen with hope in her eyes.Kaelen snatched the dagger and hurled it to the floor. "When are you going to stop this nonsense?"By then, Marcus and the others had already pieced together the truth. They sided with me, directing all their scolding squarely at Lyra."Lyra, you've let me down," Marcus said, pointing at her. "I won't claim an apprentice who stains a warrior's honor! From this day on, don't you dare say you trained under me!"When Marcus turned to leave, Lyra rushed after him. "Mr. Lewis, please, let me explain!"He yanked himself free

"No! Absolutely not!" I yanked my wrist out of Kaelen's grip. "Since I'm here, I brought a special gift for you and your future mate! After all, how else could I possibly show my respect for the way you betrayed our mate bond?"I didn't bother to lower my voice. Every werewolf in the hall heard me. The ones who had been shouting at me on Lyra's behalf fell silent and shifted their eyes toward her.Lyra snapped, "You're lying! I'm not the other she-wolf! You're making things up!"Her shrill voice ricocheted around the hall. I looked at her coldly. "Do you need evidence? Very well then."I looked over at Brenna, and she gave me a thumbs-up.A second later, a surge of spiritual power rolled through the hall, and images and sound poured straight into every mind.A telepathic broadcast directed at every werewolf present in the hall. The soft music in the hall faded, replaced by the sound of breathless moans. The scene from my garden played out in every mind.Lyra sank her teeth into

Having had years of clawing his way through pack politics, Kaelen composed himself quickly and forced a smile."My Luna," he murmured in my ear. "This isn't the place to talk. Come with me, alright? Don't make a scene here.Almost pleadingly, he added, "My moonlight, I've never asked you for anything before. Just this once, do as I say."I thought I was ready, but his words still sent a painful tremor through my heart. I knew he'd cheated on me, yet it felt absurd to hear him ask me to step back and stay quiet for another she-wolf."What if I refuse?" I asked, pushing the ache down. "What if I won't agree, Kaelen?"I met his gaze. I used to think his eyes were warm and gentle. But now, I saw only fierceness and cruelty in them."Elara, in the world of grown werewolves, the pack's reputation comes first. I don't want this to get out of hand."In the world of grown werewolves, reputation was everything. But only the worthy deserved it. What made him think he deserved any of it?I
