Chapter 1

Author: Little Shadow
"You have to be good and do as I say from now on, Anna. No more pestering Uncle Damian."

Yvonne Stewart stared at me with an indecipherable look in her eyes, though guilt and shame were notably absent in them. Anna, my daughter, poked her head out from Yvonne's embrace and peered at me warily.

Then, she called out to me in a high, crisp voice, "Uncle Damian."

She sounded innocent, her words as light as a feather. A dull ache tugged at my heart.

Calvin Chapman stopped before my bed. His voice was full of blame when he said, "Yvonne and I only left Anna in your care because we were busy with work. How could you mess that up?

"You're lucky Anna's fine. What would you have done if she weren't? I don't know what other stunts you'd pull!"

No sooner had Calvin said this than my father, Gideon Chapman—the man I was always trying so hard to please—interjected, "Don't be too hard on him, Calvin. The Chapman blood doesn't flow in his veins, after all. He didn't grow up as well as you did, though I suppose that's just his fate."

As he spoke, he sighed and clapped a hand on Calvin's shoulder, his eyes full of admiration.

My heart went cold.

I was the true heir of the Chapman family, and Calvin, a mere housekeeper's son, was the impostor who had taken my place for the last 20-something years.

The housekeeper had wanted her son to grow up wealthy, so she swapped Calvin and me at birth. She raised me, but tended to beat and snap at me.

She would remind me more often than not, "Look at Calvin! Now, that's what a true heir is like. You're not even good enough to polish his shoes, so remember your place!"

The truth eventually came out, and I was brought back to the Chapman family. Just as I thought my suffering had finally ended, my biological father unexpectedly pushed me away after he determined that I'd lost my memories.

"Are you listening, Damian?" Yvonne's voice shattered the flashback and pulled me out of my thoughts. She added coldly, "Anna said you only crashed into the barricade because you were on your phone while driving.

"Fortunately, she was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Can you imagine what might have happened if she hadn't? You call yourself her uncle?"

I stared at Anna in disbelief.

I'd instinctively veered my car the moment the crash happened so that only the driver's side would hit the barricade. I'd shielded Anna in my arms, and she remained uninjured even as I hit my head on the steering wheel and broken glass sliced my arms.

But now, the daughter I'd so fiercely protected was telling the most vicious lies in the most innocent voice.

"I was not!" I struggled to sit up and ended up tugging on my wounds instead. I gasped at the sharp pain.

"I doubt children would lie," Yvonne countered, her voice climbing to a shrill as she eyed me with enough contempt to drown me. "I never pegged you for the shameless, irresponsible type, Damian! You could at least come up with a better lie!"

The corner of my lips twitched as I flashed Yvonne a humorless smirk. "Children do lie. In fact, Anna has already mastered the art of deception."

Calvin feigned surprise. "How could you say that about Anna, Damian? She's just a child! Were you hoping to get Anna injured so you could claim the Stewarts' and Chapmans' family assets for yourself?"

What absurd argument was that?

And yet, Dad grimaced as he pointed at me and snapped, "I'm warning you, Damian—stop fantasizing! You're better off remembering your place!"

Lucas trailed into the conference room after me. He handed me a glass of water and peered at me worriedly. "Are you… okay?"Accepting the glass, I took a gulp of water and nodded. "I'm fine. I feel a lot calmer than I expected."Indeed, the feeling I had was one of calm.I thought my heart would twist painfully if I ever saw Yvonne and Anna again, or at least be overwhelmed with emotions. But when the confrontation finally happened, I realized my heart had frozen over like a lake in winter. They no longer had any hold over my heart.I thought that chapter had finally closed, but a few days later, another unwanted visitor showed up at my studio. It was Dad.He looked even more haggard than Yvonne did. Most of his hair had turned gray, and his face was full of lines. It was as if he'd aged ten years in the span of one.Lucas led him into my office, and tears sprang from his eyes the moment he saw me. He wanted to embrace me, but I stepped aside and dodged him.His hands hung awk

The next day, Yvonne tracked me down to my workshop with Anna in tow.I happened to be in a meeting with clients that day when my assistant burst through the door nervously, whispering in my ear, "Sir, there's a woman who goes by the last name 'Stewart' who is here with a child. She insists on seeing you…"Everyone in the conference room turned their gaze on me.Keeping my expression neutral, I flashed my clients a smile. "Please excuse me."I left the conference room and immediately spotted Yvonne and Anna standing in the lobby. It had been a year since I last saw Yvonne. She'd lost a lot of weight, her eyes full of exhaustion and weariness. Gone was the confident, powerful woman who could command a room.Anna had gotten taller, too. She hid behind Yvonne timidly, her eyes rimmed red.Yvonne's eyes lit up at the sight of me. She hurried forward, her voice trembling a little. "I… I've finally found you, Damian."I didn't move toward her and eyed her with cool indifference. "Is

For the next few days, I had my lawyer officially petition for a divorce from Yvonne and submitted all the evidence of her extramarital affair. At the same time, I'd petitioned the court for a division of marital assets.Yvonne was caught off-guard by the court notice. She was busy handling the company's crisis and the character-assassinating rumors about her. Now, she had one more thing to deal with—our upcoming divorce. She tried to call me, only to discover that I'd blocked her number and socials everywhere. The only way she could reach me was through my lawyer, expressing her intention to settle and resolve things amicably.According to her lawyer, Yvonne was willing to give up on her fortune if it meant I'd withdraw the petition and make a public statement explaining this was a misunderstanding.I told my lawyer, "Alright. I might just consider her request if she spends the next three days and nights begging on her knees for forgiveness on the largest square in the city."Yvo

Calvin's birthday party ended on a scandalous, messy note. The next day, the Stewarts and the Chapmans became the laughingstock of the city, as did Calvin's nest-stealing antics. Yvonne's company suffered a steep drop in stock price, with many of her collaborators terminating contracts left and right. The Chapman family's business suffered equally.Meanwhile, I was sitting at the gleaming floor-to-ceiling windows of my studio abroad. I watched the video Lucas had sent me while leisurely sipping coffee. In the video, the banquet hall was a mess after the guests left. Calvin and Yvonne were locked in a heated argument."Why didn't you tell me that Damian hadn't lost his memories, Yvonne? You said you had everything under your control!" Calvin cried hysterically."How would I know he hadn't lost his memories?" Yvonne stormed up to Calvin, grabbing him by the shoulders and shaking him roughly. "What's the point of hashing things out now?"My reputation's ruined! The company's ruined

On Calvin's birthday, Dad threw him a huge party in the banquet hall of the most luxurious hotel in the city. Yvonne splurged on the event and invited practically every socialite and elite in the city.Calvin showed up in a bespoke tailored suit, entering the hall with Yvonne on his arm as the crowd wished him. Dad was beaming beside them, looking like a proud, happy parent. The three of them were the portrait of a happy family, the object of everyone's envy.I, on the other hand, had gotten on a plane three days ago and headed abroad.I'd timed everything perfectly. The surprise would unfold when the party reached its peak, and the emcee invited Yvonne to give a heartfelt speech on stage. The gift I'd prepared would have already arrived.I texted Lucas' friend stationed back home. "Let's get it started."Inside the banquet hall, Yvonne held a microphone to her mouth as she stared at Calvin indulgently. "Calvin, you've been a light in everyone's life since you were a kid, a sunbe

Calvin distracted Yvonne with his sudden dizzy spell. Glaring over her shoulder, she snapped at me, "Are you happy now?"After that, the entire family made a fuss about getting Calvin to the hospital. Before they left, Gideon even turned around to snarl at me, "You're a walking jinx!"I stood still until my legs grew numb, and only then did I head into the storeroom. Physically and mentally exhausted, I collapsed in the narrow bed and fell into a deep slumber.I had no idea how long I'd been asleep, only that I was woken up by a rough dragging sensation. Yvonne looked feral with her bloodshot eyes as she yanked me out of bed."How could you be so cruel, Damian?" she growled without rhyme or reason before I snapped out of my grogginess. "You knew Calvin was severely allergic to peanuts, yet you gave him a peanut butter cake on purpose! You were trying to kill him out of sheer spite!"I froze. Peanut butter cake? When did I ever give him that?I sputtered incredulously. "Do I look
