Chapter 1

"Sierra, here. I bought you an energy drink. Drink some before your assessment tomorrow. It'll sharpen your reflexes."

As the familiar voice drifted into my ears, my whole body jolted.

I snapped my head up and took in the sight around me—the familiar simulation assessment grounds, my familiar teammates, and the tactical gear bag I knew all too well.

I was reborn and back to the day before the practical admission assessment.

Before I could even snap out of the shock, Maya Bardolph beamed as she shoved the can into my hands. Beside her, Dale Ashshade looked at her with eyes full of pure affection.

"You're too sweet, Maya. Sierra is incredibly lucky to have a sister like you."

I almost laughed when I heard that.

Any random wolf in the streets knew that cheating was strictly forbidden during the practical admission assessment, let alone consuming any substance that altered my physical performance.

In my past life, I had received the same energy drink, but I had politely turned it down and made a point to remind Maya to stay away from my tactical gear bag.

But halfway through the assessment, I had just opened my bottle when a wolf with a sharp sense of smell reported me on the spot.

After both my bottle and body tested positive for banned performance boosters, the entire team I led had our scores canceled.

My dream school blacklisted me, and the pack issued me a formal warning. My future was destroyed.

It wasn't until much later that I learned Maya had secretly spiked my drink with the performance booster. When I broke down and confronted her, she hid behind my boyfriend, Dale, and sobbed.

"I swear I just wanted you to take first place, Sierra… I never thought it would ruin your life…"

Dale wrapped his arms around her and soothed her before turning on me with a cold glare.

"She was just trying to help! Are you going to drive an innocent she-wolf to the brink just because of one mistake?"

Even my parents looked annoyed. "It's just a practical assessment. Maya's an omega who doesn't understand the rules. Why didn't you explain clearly to her beforehand?"

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and remained completely silent.

Later, the side effects of the performance booster left me bedridden as I recovered. Maya and Dale came to visit with a pot of herbal tea, claiming they wanted to make amends.

"Sierra, I handled every step of making this tea myself, from harvesting the blossoms to drying them and brewing it… I spent ages learning how to do it.

"Please drink it and stop being mad at me."

Dale had personally helped me up and fed me the tea, but it was brewed with unrefined silver oleander.

I died of poisoning right then and there.

At the doors of the emergency room, Maya cried so hard she could barely stand on her feet.

"I'm sorry… I'm just too stupid…

"I didn't know oleander was poisonous. I just thought it smelled sweet…"

As I remembered how my organs had burned, and how I died from pure agony in my past life, I raised my hand and tossed the energy drink into the trash can.

It landed with a thud.

Maya's eyes immediately turned red-rimmed.

"Sierra… You like this drink, don't you?

"I saved my allowance for weeks just to buy it for you. That's the best thing I could afford…

"Even if you don't like it, you didn't have to throw it away…"

Her voice grew softer. It was as if she had just suffered massive injustice.

Maya cried and wrestled free from the Enforcers' grip before crawling toward Mom and Dad, who stood frozen to the spot. She threw her arms around their legs. "It's not what it looks like! Mom, Dad, you have to trust me!"I just wanted to help Sierra get first place, and I had no idea it was a banned drug. The seller told me it was just ordinary nutritional powder…"I'm just too stupid and careless, and I'm always causing trouble for Sierra."Sierra, I'm sorry. I know I've messed up! Please, help me explain to the Elders!"I watched her pathetic, clumsy act coldly, then crouched down to look at her at eye level."You were awfully persistent in helping me, Maya. You chased me around asking for my water bottle, and when I wouldn't give it to you, you and Dale went out of your way trying to force me to drink the banned substances."If you really thought it was just a supplement, why didn't you openly give it to me? Why did you have to spike my water behind my back?"You always say

The Elder Council representative pondered briefly and exchanged a few quiet words with Garrick before addressing the room."Everyone present today will undergo a diagnostic test, candidates and staff members alike."The Enforcers will begin with today's volunteers, focusing on anyone carrying unauthorized communication devices and banned substances. Anyone found carrying either will be severely punished."Enforcers, divide into groups and begin the sweep!""No!" Maya shrieked. She frantically thrashed to break free and escape the Enforcers' search, but they pinned her to the floor.Tears streamed down her face as she stammered, "T-This is humiliating!"Sierra's the only one cheating and taking drugs. Why should the rest of us have to go through a search just because of her?"She doesn't own this assessment ground. Does her authority rank higher than the Alpha's? Why are you all doing whatever she says?"Garrick frowned at her. "The candidates are very cooperative because no on

Nobody paid any attention to Maya. Instead, my teammates immediately crowded around Garrick."Sierra didn't even set foot on the assessment grounds, so our scores shouldn't be affected, right?""Exactly! The Alpha might have been alerted because of the surveillance request, but since she didn't enter the grounds today, she technically isn't a candidate. Even if she did take drugs, that's her personal issue, which shouldn't affect us."When Maya realized that she was completely ignored, her face paled, and she clenched her fists tightly."Sierra, why didn't you tell us you were dropping out of the assessment? Mom and Dad heard rumors about your cheating outside, and they were both so anxious that they fainted."I raised an eyebrow in feigned surprise and turned around to look at Garrick."Can volunteers carry personal communication devices into the grounds? If I recall the assessment protocols correctly, only the Elder's office houses an external landline. Everyone else is prohibi

The moment the words left my mouth, everyone fell into stunned silence.Dale was the first to snap out of it and let out a cold laugh, as if he had just heard the biggest joke on earth."You're literally standing here, Sierra. What? Are you trying to tell us we were looking at a ghost in the waiting area today?"What's more, Maya personally poured water into your bottle. There were so many of us around, and we can all testify to that!"Stop spinning lies to clear your name. Are you trying to claim all of us forced you to take the banned boosters?"There are security cameras all over the grounds. I believe the assessment committee can check them and get to the bottom of this."Maya timidly lifted her head and looked at me, constantly dabbing at the tears on her face. To an outsider, it would have looked like we were a pair of deeply bonded sisters."Sierra, I know you're terrified of being exiled from the pack, but lying is wrong. Everyone just saw you hanging out in the waiting

"No need," I replied in a flat voice, completely devoid of emotion.Maya's eyes immediately welled up with tears again, as if her tear ducts were wired to a toggle switch."Sierra, are you still harboring a grudge over yesterday's drink? I swear I didn't mean it—"Before she could even finish her sentence, Dale approached. He slung his arm over her shoulders and pulled her tight against his chest. When he talked to her, he didn't even bother to glance at me."Drop it, Maya. This isn't your fault at all, and you were just trying to help. Sierra is the one who insisted on blowing it out of proportion."He turned toward the rest of the teammates and raised his bottle like he was making a grand toast."The water Maya poured is literally the best thing I've tasted all week. Let's take it as a good omen for a smooth assessment today."Maya's eyes brimmed with tears as she smiled and sweetly said, "Good luck, everyone. I know you're all going to crush it."I didn't respond and looked

The moment Dale saw Maya shed tears, his expression immediately shifted. He lunged forward in a few big strides and shielded her with his body before barking at me in a furious roar, "What the hell is wrong with you, Sierra Beckett?"Do you think having good combat talent gives you the right to humiliate her like that?"The other teammates immediately chimed in."Yeah, Sierra. That was way too harsh.""Maya was just trying to give you a drink, yet you threw it straight into the trash. What kind of attitude is that?""She isn't your maid, you know."Standing behind the crowd, Maya wiped her tears, looking like she was fighting to keep herself from breaking down."No, don't. Please don't blame Sierra. It was all my fault…"I looked at the group defending her and coldly said, "All of you signed the pre-assessment oath. The practical admission assessment forbids the intake of any unregistered external substances, including energy drinks, potions, or supplements."Maya, did you re
