I felt my stomach drop because that was possibly the worst information I could have received.

“She bailed on us for him?” I asked, trying to keep my voice neutral even though internally I was panicking about all the ways this could go wrong.

“Apparently he just showed up at her dorm and asked her to lunch, and she said yes without even thinking about our plans,” Riley said, stabbing at his food without actually eating any of it. “She’s been texting him constantly since the festival. I can see her checking her phone every five seconds and smiling at whatever he’s saying.”

I could see the jealousy written all over Riley’s face, mixed with genuine hurt that Naomi was prioritizing this new guy over him.

“Maybe it’s just lunch,” I said weakly, though we both knew that was probably wishful thinking given how I know first hand how persuasive Cain can be.
