Chapter 202

The last two weeks had been a special kind of hell.

School was a disaster. Missing weeks of classes meant professors didn’t care what kind of personal emergency you’d had, they just wanted to know when you were turning in the makeup work.

Dr. Dooley had been understanding about my research project, which I’d already done most of the groundwork for anyway, but Madison—the same Madison who used to make my lab sessions miserable when I was group leader—had done a complete personality transplant and was now almost aggressively nice to me. It was almost more unsettling than when she’d hated me.

Cameron had caught me in the hallway once between classes and asked if I was okay, said I looked stressed, and I’d deflected because what was I supposed to say? Yeah, I’m fine, just dealing with my father who’s a war criminal and also there are vampires out there for my blood and I’m pretty sure my mate still hasn’t forgiven me for waking up said war criminal father without asking permission first.

Luca’s throat still hurts when he burst through the entrance to the underground chamber but none of that mattered when he saw the blown-out ventilation shaft and the empty space where Lily should have been.Jessica was slumped against the wall with blood matting her hair and running down the side of her face, and Aurora was on her hands and knees trying to push herself up while making these small wounded sounds that told Luca she’d taken a serious hit. But no Lily.He stood there for maybe three seconds trying to process what he was seeing and then his legs gave out and he was on his knees with his hands pressed flat against the cold stone. The sound that came out of him was this raw animal howl of rage that echoed off the walls and kept going until his throat felt like it was tearing apart all over again.Luca distantly registered that he needed to get control of himself except he couldn’t.Footsteps behind him and then Cain’s voice cutting through the roaring in his ears, “Luca, wha

Cain felt something cold settle in his chest because he’d always known Samuel was ambitious, had always suspected the man was capable of putting his own interests above the pack’s, but standing here looking at him with a weapon raised over Arden’s defenseless body made Cain realize he’d severely underestimated just how far Samuel was willing to go. “Step away from him, Samuel,” Cain said, keeping his voice level even though every instinct was screaming at him to shift and rip Samuel’s throat out right now. Samuel tilted his head like he was considering it. “Or what? You’ll tell on me? Run crying to your brother about how mean old Samuel broke the rules?” He adjusted his grip on the blade and Cain watched him position it directly over Arden’s heart, and time did that thing where it slowed down and Cain could see exactly what was about to happen and knew he was too far away to stop it. “This pack has been weak for too long,” Samuel said, and now there was heat in his voice, genuine

Luca had fought Jonathan before and he’d learned two important things during that fight. First, Jonathan was faster than almost any vampire Luca had ever encountered, which made sense given that he was vampire royalty and had probably been alive for centuries. Second, Jonathan liked to talk, liked to play with his opponents like a cat with a mouse, and that tendency to monologue was the only reason Luca had survived their last encounter. Jonathan saw him coming and smiled in a way that made Luca’s hackles rise, and then he did something with his hand that made all the other vampires back off and create a circle around them. Luca shifted back to human because he needed to be able to speak and understand what the hell was happening here before he ripped Jonathan’s throat out. “What do you want?” “What do I want?” Jonathan repeated, like he was tasting the words to see if he liked them. “That’s such a broad question, alpha. Right now I want to watch you suffer. Later I want to drai

Luca made it back to the underground chamber in under three minutes and Aurora was kneeling next to Lily’s unconscious body with her hands glowing that green color that meant she was trying to heal something and Jessica was reinforcing the barriers.“What happened?” Luca demanded, already moving toward them even though he knew he couldn’t get through the barriers without Jessica dropping them first.“Blood magic,” Aurora said without looking up from where she had her hands pressed against Lily’s chest. “Someone’s targeting her through Arden.”Luca felt his stomach drop because that meant someone had gotten close enough to Arden to take a sample, had planned this to coordinate it with the attack.“Can you stop it?” Luca asked, and he hated how desperate he sounded but he didn’t care because Lily was lying there not moving and he could see her chest rising and falling but barely, like each breath was taking more effort than she had to give.“I’m trying,” Aurora said, and the frustration

The alarms were still screaming when Luca hit the main corridor and found a pack member called Thomas sprinting toward him with blood running down the side of his face.“Alpha, the electrical room is on fire,” Thomas said, not even slowing down as they fell into step together, and Luca’s brain was already trying to calculate how a fire in the electrical room could happen at the exact same time as a coordinated attack because that cannot be a coincidence,.“How bad?”“Bad enough that half our systems are down and the other half are failing,” Thomas said, wiping blood out of his eye with his forearm. “The fire started in the southwest corner where all the main junction boxes are, and by the time we got there it had already spread to the backup generators.”They reached the command center and it was chaos because everyone was talking at once and nobody seemed to know what the hell was actually happening except that it was bad and getting worse by the second.Cain was already there with a
