“You stupid bitch!” I held my phone away from my ear to protect it from the loud insults coming through the speaker. God, I didn’t sign up for this. When I got hired as the Personal Assistant of Keanu Martell one year ago, I didn’t expect delivering break-up souvenirs to become part of my job description. And yet today, Mr. Martell had asked me to deliver yet another box of chocolate and a card that simply read: ‘I enjoyed our time together, but it has to come and end here.’ Signed Keanu. This was the fourth woman this year I’d delivered a break-up souvenir to, and now she was trying to blow my ears off. “Hello?” Nicky’s voice boomed through the speakers again. Counting to three, I finally spoke, keeping the phone a safe distance from my ear. “Hello, Miss Curry. I assume you got the card?” “You know damn well I got it!” Her voice pitched so high only dogs could probably hear the upper registers. “How dare you send me that stupid card?” I leaned back in my chair, glancing at Mr. Martell’s closed office door. He wasn’t in there because he’d stepped out with the CMO a couple of minutes ago. “I sent it on Mr. Martell’s orders. If you have a problem with the message, you should take it up with him.” “Bullshit! I know what you’re doing. I see the way you look at him.” I sighed. Here we go. “Nicky—” “You think I’m stupid? You want him for yourself. You’re trying to get rid of me so you can fuck your way into his bed, you desperate little—” “Careful.” I cut her off very coldly. “Not everyone is as desperate as you, Nicky. I have a boyfriend in an ACTUAL relationship. And even if I didn’t, I’d never sleep with a man like Keanu Martell. I’d rather stay single.” So what if Keanu Martell was one of the most gorgeous men I’d ever seen, with his perfectly contoured face, his electric cyan eyes, and muscles that rippled with every movement he made? Even if I didn’t have Max, it would be stupid of me to have any interest in him when I’d witnessed four different women having their hopes crushed by him. “You’re a liar,” Nicky hissed. “I bet you’re fucking him right now—” “I’m hanging up. Have a nice day, Nicky.” I ended the call and set the phone face-down on my desk. I was so done with the same accusations over and over. It was honestly tiring. Thirty seconds later, it rang again. Same number. I declined it and blocked the number. “Trouble?” A familiar deep voice nearly made me jump out of my seat. I turned my head to the side, and there he stood. Keanu Martell wore a grey tailored one-piece suit that fitted perfectly to his body. He was watching me from the entrance of the hallway leading into my desk space, holding a cup of coffee. Oh shit. How long had he been standing there? Keanu slowly crossed over to my desk, standing in front of it and gazing down at me. “Was that Nicky?” “Uh, yeah.” I cleared my throat. “She called me about the...package you had me send.” “And she took it well, I assume?” Amusement flickered in his eyes. “She called me some very colorful words, and she thinks I’m lying about you wanting to end things with her.” A muscle in his sharp jaw ticked. “I’m going to have to talk to her. She should know better than to disrespect my employees.” Then his head tilted. “What did you tell her?” My face heated. Had he heard what I said? “I told her to take it up with you.” “Mmm.” He set his coffee on my desk, then leaned down, bracing his hands on the desk. He was still a good distance from me, but the cedar fragrance of his cologne assaulted my senses. “That’s not all you said though, is it?” My heart hammered. “I don’t know what you—” “You’d rather stay single than sleep with a man like me.” His voice dropped to a low, dangerous timbre that made my stomach flip. “That’s what you said, isn’t it, Ethel? Only desperate women allow me to fuck them.” I swallowed hard. “I was just trying to get her off the phone.” “Were you?” He studied my face, his cyan eyes boring into me. “Or did you mean it?” “I—” “Careful, Ethel. Because that sounds like a challenge to me.” His lips curved into a smirk. “And I love challenges.” Before I could say anything, he straightened, pulling his warmth and his scent away. Then he picked up his cup. “Hold my calls for the next hour. I have work to do.” He walked into his office and closed the door, and I sat frozen at my desk, my pulse suddenly racing. “I love challenges.” What the hell did that even mean?~~ETHEL~~I didn't expect to fall asleep the entire night. And I didn't. I lay on the bed in Maya's guest room just staring at the ceiling until the clouds outside the window gradually turned sunny.A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. The door opened, and Maya walked in carrying a tray. "Good morning."She set the tray on the nightstand. "I ordered some muffins and made hot chocolate. Just the way you like it."I forced myself to sit up. "Thank you."She sat on the edge of the bed and looked at me expectantly. I stared at the tray, the food, the steam rising from the cup and all it did was make my stomach turn."I'm not hungry.""Ethel, you didn't eat anything last night and it's already late morning." She tilted her head. "You should at least try to have a few bites. For me.""Please, Maya. I don't want to eat."I already felt nauseous. I knew the moment I tasted anything, I was going to throw it up.She pressed the tray toward me. "Just one bite—""I said I don't wa
~~KEANU~~The porch was dark. I hadn't turned on the lights when I returned. I'd just sat down on the wooden floorboards, my back against the railing, and stared at nothing. My father's pendant was still in my hand. I'd been holding it for what felt like hours, turning it over and over, feeling the weight of it.Ten years of searching for it, hoping it would lead me to the murderer, and all this time it had been sitting in David Sterling's drawer. That's where it had been. In the drawer of a man who had watched my father die.The same man whose medical debts I'd cleared and pre-paid for any procedure he might need in the future. The fucking bastard must've been laughing at me the entire time. And Ethel had known the truth for three days. Three days she'd looked at me and said she loved me, and all that time, she'd known exactly who her father was.Car headlights swept across the porch, blinding me for a moment. I squinted and raised a hand to block the light until the engine cut off a
~~ETHEL~~At some point through my tears, I must have fallen asleep on the arm of the couch. The sound of the door opening jerked me awake. I shot to my feet instantly, my heart lurching with a hope I knew was stupid but couldn't stop.Keanu had come back. He'd had time to think. He understood. He was going to—It wasn't Keanu.Edwards stood in the doorway, his expression neutral as he took in the scene. Me standing there with the sheets still wrapped around me, my face probably blotchy and swollen from crying."Miss Sterling," he said. His eyes flicked down to the sheets, before he turned his gaze and his body away. "I came to drive you back to the city."I stared at him for a moment, my brain struggling to process his words. I looked past him toward the dark porch. Keanu's car that had brought us here was gone. Edwards had come in a different one."What about Keanu?" I asked, my voice hoarse.Edwards paused. "From my understanding, he will come later with his car."My stomach sank.
~~ETHEL~~My mouth dried up like the desert. The pendant sat in Keanu's palm like an accusation, catching the dim light from the cabin windows. I stared at it, and my vision blurred at the edges for a moment. This wasn't the way it was supposed to go. I had just been planning to tell him. I had promised myself I would tell him when I woke up. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.Keanu's face wasn't angry. It was confused. His brow was furrowed, his eyes searching mine like he was trying to solve a puzzle that didn't make sense. That was almost worse than anger."Ethel." He said my name carefully, like he was trying not to spook me. "Where did you find this? This is my father's pendant. Did you find it somewhere? Did you buy it from a store?" He walked towards me. "Why didn't you tell me?""I found it at my father's apartment." I forced the words from my throat.Keanu paused. "Your father's apartment?""Yes."He looked down at the pendant, then back at me. "Where did he find it?"I
~~KEANU~~Waking up to Ethel curled in my arms hadn't stopped being my favourite thing and I knew it never would. Her breathing slow and even, her face peaceful in sleep.I watched her for a long time, taking in the curve of her cheek, the dark sweep of her lashes, and the pendant resting against her collarbone. My pendant. The one I had put around her neck and never wanted to take back. She was so beautiful. And these past few days, when she had been pulling away from me, had nearly destroyed me.The distance wasn't completely gone. I could still feel it there. But making love to her today had been different. She had been more present than she had been in days. She had told me she was scared of losing me. I believed her. I also knew that wasn't all of it. There was something else she wasn't telling me yet.But I wasn't going to push. I would show her, with my patience and my love, that she had no reason to be afraid.Sliding out of the bed, I made sure not to wake her. I pulled on my
~~ETHEL~~Keanu's eyes widened, his mouth opening with a soft gasp. He was so full in my throat my eyes watered from the effort it took not to gag."That's it, sweetheart," he said hotly, appreciation lacing every single word. "You're so fucking beautiful. I could watch you like this forever."He gave a shallow thrust, and I moaned around him and cupped his ass, urging him not to hold back. He withdrew to the tip, then slid right back in. Slow and gentle yet insistent into my throat each time. His breathing became harsher with each thrust, and I knew he was close. But suddenly, his grip tightened on my face, pulling me to my feet."Come here, love," he whispered, lifting me into his arms, and I automatically wrapped my legs around his waist. "I need to feel all of you now."He carried me down the short hallway to the bedroom. It had a normal-sized bed that was made, the sheets spotless without a stain.Keanu gently laid me down before stepping back to strip off his shirt and completel
~~ETHEL~~By the time Monday finally rolled by, I was a nervous wreck. The weekend had passed in absolute silence from Keanu. No visits, no calls, no texts.Stepping under the warm shower, it did nothing to dull the wild images running through my mind like an erotic scene from a movie.Images that
~~ETHEL~~ Keanu drove me back to my flat just as he insisted. The car was filled with silence, something I usually welcomed. But now, I hated it. He had his gaze fixed on the road, those strong hands gripping the wheel, his calm expression giving nothing away. I, on the other hand, felt lik
