Mag-log in~~ETHEL~~
The moment my lips touched Keanu’s, his whole body went rigid. For a moment, I was sure he was going to shove me away. He didn’t. Instead, I felt his hand on the back of my head as he deepened the kiss, our lips melding. It was like zaps of electric current shooting through my veins. His tongue brushed over my lips, but just as I was about to open up, a high-pitched shriek broke through the moment. “What the fuck?!” I broke the kiss, but I didn’t look at Max. My gaze remained on Keanu, my heart thumping inside my chest. His eyes were dark, unreadable. I was beginning to question the wisdom of what I’d just done. I had just kissed my boss without his consent to piss my ex-boyfriend off. What the fuck was wrong with me? I was definitely getting fired. “What the fuck, Ethel?” Max screeched again, his voice filled with indignation. “Did you just kiss another man in front of me?” I finally looked at him, my irritation bouncing back. “Should I get you glasses so you can be sure of what you saw next time?” “No, this is bullshit. You’re just trying to make me jealous.” Max shook his head resolutely, as he reached for my hand. “But Babe, we can work this out.” ”Let go of my woman!” Keanu hissed, his tone low but dangerous. My woman. I knew he was only playing along, but I couldn’t help the shivers that cascaded down my spine. Especially when he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me flush to his body. Max’s eyes flashed with murderous intent. “No, she’s mine!” Before I could anticipate his next move, he lunged forward. I gasped, sure that he’d just punched Keanu. But Keanu was faster. He caught Max’s fist just in time and gave it a ruthless twist. Max yelled out in pain, “Son of a bitch,” Keanu continued to twist, his lips stretched in a smile that held no warmth. “Don’t throw a punch unless you can make it land, Anderson.” He finally let go of Max who stumbled back, staring at him eyes wide. “How did you know my surname?” The corner of Keanu’s lips twitched, his expression calculating. “What do you think?” The air was so thick with tension you could cut through it with a knife. I knew it needed to end before this escalated. “Max, just go away. You and I are done.” Max looked at me, and his lips curled in disgust. “I should’ve known that all those nights you claimed you were going to a meeting, you were actually whoring yourself out to your boss. You had the audacity to act all offended when you saw me with Tanya, but it turns out you’re nothing but a slut.” “One more insult out your mouth,” Keanu’s voice rang with warning. “and you’re going to be lucky if you return home with any of your perfect teeth intact.” Max opened his mouth as if to do just that, but taking in the intimidating look on Keanu’s face, his mouth shut right back up. Turning, he stormed back to his car and entered it like he was being chased. Five seconds later, the car peeled down the road at top speed. “Yes, run along you cheater,” Maya screamed after him as she clapped her hands. I winced. At this point, I was sure half of my neighbours had heard all this commotion. Maya turned to me. “Are you okay, Ethel?” I nodded. “Yes. Thank you, Maya.” I could see the questions swimming in her eyes as she moved her gaze from me to Keanu then back. “I guess I’ll leave then. Have a good night.” She paused, looking at Keanu. “It was nice seeing you again Mr. Hunk... I mean Mr Martell.” With that, she scurried off to her car, but not before giving me the you-have-so-much to explain look. Now I was left alone with my boss to face the consequences of my actions. My cheeks on fire, I forced myself to look at him. “Thank you, Mr Martell. For helping me out. And...” I cleared my throat. “And for playing alo—” “You used me.” Keanu cut me off, but there was a hint of amusement dancing in his cyan eyes as he pinned them on me. When he closed the distance between us, it took everything in me not to take a step back. “You used me, Ethel,” he repeated, the corner of his mouth twitching. “Nobody uses me without giving me something in return.” I swallowed hard. “”I’m sorry, Mr Martell. I... I’ll understand if you want to fire me for that.” A dark chuckle left his mouth. “Fire you? I didn’t ask for an apology, Ethel, and I’m certainly not firing you. I just want you to tell me.” He took my chin between his fingers and angled my head to look him straight in the eye. “What are you willing to do for me in return?” My pulse was racing. What did he want in return? Why did I feel like I already knew? “I... I don’t know,” I whispered. His lips stretched into a smirk. And then he let go of my chin and stepped back, giving me space to finally breathe freely again. “Why did you come here?” I asked to distract myself from how unsettled I felt. As much as I was grateful for his timely intervention, it felt strange. Keanu had only been here once when he dropped me off after we’d worked late into the night. “You left this at your desk.” Reaching into his pocket, he produced a bracelet. The silver bracelet I’d worn today. I’d taken it off because the lock on it kept getting caught in the keyboard while I was trying to type. I looked at his face as I took it from his hand. “You came here just to bring me this?” I’d assumed it would be something important or work related. Not this. He could’ve just kept it in my drawer and I would’ve gotten it back on Monday. Had he really come all this way just to return this to me, or was it just an excuse to see me? “Does Anderson have a spare key to your flat?” Keanu questioned, cutting through my thoughts. I nodded. “Yes.” “Then you’re coming home with me.” It took a second for his words to register. “Wh...What?” Keanu looked at me impatiently like I was a five-year-old he needed to explain something basic to. “It’s too late to have somebody replace the locks, and that guy has a spare key he can use to get in. You can’t sleep here tonight. I’ll take you to my house. Then we’ll have the locks replaced tomorrow.” I bit my lip, realising what he said made sense. But that didn’t mean I had to sleep at his house. “Thank you for the offer, Mr Martell. But I’ll just call. She’ll come and—” “What, Ethel?” Keanu cut me off, raising a brow, daring me. “Are you scared of being in the same house as me?” “I...No, of course not.” I quickly said. “Good. Go grab whatever you may need for tonight and tomorrow morning. I’ll be waiting for you in my car.” Without waiting for me to protest, he walked towards his sleek, black Maybach parked on the other side of the street. Oh God, what have I gotten myself into?~~ETHEL~~ Keanu's eyes hardened as he looked at me like he was seeing something he hadn't noticed before. I couldn't speak, but I knew my silence was doing all the talking. That yes, I'd fallen in love with him. The realization I'd kept to myself for the past few days was now laid bare in front of him, and I had no idea what he was going to do with it. The silence that settled was so deafening that I could hear the ticking of the quartz clock on the wall and my own heartbeat thundering in my ears. "Do you remember the first time we fucked in my office?" Keanu finally spoke, making me flinch at the deliberate crudeness of his words. I waited for him to continue, more scared of what anyone had to say than I'd ever been in my life. "After I returned from the washroom, you were the first one to bring it up that this needed to be strictly casual," he said, taking a step forward while I resisted the urge to take one back. "So what was that? Some
~~ETHEL~~I sat in the living room with a cup of coffee I had barely touched, staring at the dark liquid like it held answers. Keanu had said to get some rest, but I could barely bring myself to do that when I went up to the bedroom.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the explosion, Maura's hands shoving me backward, and Keanu's desperate voice shouting my name. Sleep wasn't an option.Neither was calling Maya. She'd be busy at work, and though I knew she would come running if I told her, the last thing I wanted was to interrupt her day with my spiral. So I sat in the living room and stared at nothing in particular as I waited for Keanu to return, wondering whether he was with Maura right now. The sound of the door opening made me jump.Keanu walked in, and I stood immediately, setting the cup on the coffee table."You're back," I said. "Were you able to figure things out about what happened on the site?"He didn't answer. He didn't even seem to hear me.Instead, he crossed th
~~KEANU~~The silence that followed thrummed with tension. I impatiently watched Maura's hands shake as she set the phone down on the blanket, her eyes filling with even more tears. Her mouth opened and closed several times before any words came out."I swear I didn't want to deceive—""Cut to the chase and do not waste my time."She swallowed before she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "Weeks ago, when I found out Martell Corporation was financing a renewable energy project and that Solberg was one of the companies bidding for it, I had no doubt we were going to lose because you would find out I was part of that company and you would want nothing to do with us."I remembered my shock when she turned out to be the project manager. I had let the procurement team handle it, and I'd gone in blind."And then, three weeks ago, your mother contacted me. She told me..." Maura paused. "She told me that you haven't been able to move on from me. That you're not over me. And that y
~~KEANU~~ I fucking hated the smell of hospitals. I'd hated it since the day I had to come to collect my father's body from the morgue. That acrid scent of disinfectant was supposed to smell clean. But all it did was cover up the scent of death and despair. I didn't want to be here. But Edwards was right. Maura might have seen something before the blast. And I needed to know what. Knocking twice, I pushed the door open. Maura was lying in her bed, a white bandage wrapped around her head like a crown. The moment she saw me, she sat up and winced at the sudden movement. Then her face brightened with the kind of smile that used to make my chest warm years ago. Now it just made me tired. "You came to see me," she said softly. "I thought you wouldn't." I stepped inside, letting the door close behind me. "How are you feeling?" "I'm okay." She touched the bandage gingerly, then let out a weak laugh. "Just a concussion, according to the doctor. Though I have to say, this ugly headband i
~~KEANU~~I couldn't get it out of my head.I'd been on the phone with a Japanese businessman after barely paying attention to Maura's explanation of inverter placement, when the world had tilted sideways. The deafening crack of an explosion, and then I'd turned to see smoke and dust billowing from the storage area. My phone had almost clattered to the ground.I don't remember crossing the distance. One moment I was standing near the perimeter, the next I was in the smoke, shouting her name, my heart slamming against my ribs so hard I thought it might crack them."Ethel! ETHEL!"Nothing. Just smoke and dust and the ringing in my ears and the visceral, consuming terror that I was too late. I'd found her on the ground, disoriented but otherwise unharmed, and the relief had been so intense I'd barely been able to breathe. But it was the terror that stayed with me now, hours later, as Edwards drove us back to the site. The only thing that had ever come close to that feeling was finding my
~~ETHEL~~I stared at Keanu as I waited for an explanation that would make sense of it. "Was it something to do with the construction materials?""Don't worry about that right now." His voice was even. "We're all safe. That's what matters."I knew him well enough to know he was giving me a diplomatic non-answer. But I could see he had his own doubts and suspicions, things he didn't think I should deal with. And maybe he was right. It was best if I didn't.We stepped out into the hallway, where Edwards was waiting with his usual stoic expression. Before Keanu could say anything, another doctor approached, this one older with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses."Mr. Martell?""Yes.""Miss Callahan is awake. She has a concussion and required a few stitches for the cut on her forehead, but she's stable. She would like to see you."I felt the tightness in my chest again as I watched the struggle on Keanu's face."Can I see her?" I asked before Keanu could respond. The doctor look
~~KEANU~~Ethel's comeback hung over the table several seconds after she'd said it.Sharon was still coughing into her napkin to hide her laugh. My mother sat perfectly still, staring at Ethel like she'd just discovered a new species. It took a lot to render Catherine Martell speechless, but Ethel
~~ETHEL~~The day of the party arrived like it couldn't wait.Maya had arrived at my flat two hours before Keanu was due to pick me up, armed with a makeup bag the size of a small suitcase. Her energy suggested she'd been looking forward to this more than I had."Stop moving," she muttered, hoverin

~~ETHEL~~By the time Monday finally rolled by, I was a nervous wreck. The weekend had passed in absolute silence from Keanu. No visits, no calls, no texts.Stepping under the warm shower, it did nothing to dull the wild images running through my mind like an erotic scene from a movie.Images that
