Chapter 2

Author: Juno
After Scarlett left, I sat frozen on the couch.

My husband, Elio Smith, came home early from work. The moment he saw me, the emotions he had been holding back burst out.

He broke down crying. "Babe, I thought I'd never see you again or live with you anymore!"

I gently patted his back as tears welled up in my own eyes.

He had been reborn, too.

The next day, we discussed how to handle everything that was about to happen.

In the middle of our conversation, the doorbell suddenly rang.

I got up to open the door, only to find Scarlett standing there with an overly sweet smile. She was holding several large gift bags, and her children stood behind her.

"Felly, I'm here to see you."

Although her voice was gentle as usual, I could sense the fakeness hidden in her words.

I looked at her coldly, sneering silently in my heart. But on the surface, I calmly stood aside to invite them into the house. "Come in. Just make yourself at home."

My tone was flat, stripped of the warmth I once had in my past life.

Scarlett walked into the living room, set the gifts down, and pulled her children closer. "Kids, come over and say hi."

The twins obediently greeted us but sounded timid.

Elio came out of the kitchen. When he saw Scarlett and her kids, a flash of disgust crossed his eyes, but he quickly masked it with composure.

"Ms. Thorne, what brings you here? Have a seat. What do you need from us?" Elio's tone was direct, not a hint of small talk.

Scarlett acted as if she didn't notice our coldness. She forced a few tears and began to sob.

"As my health has been declining recently, I can't stop worrying about my kids. I know you two are kind-hearted people, so I'm wondering if you…"

Scarlett went on and on about how hard things had been for her, subtly hinting that she wanted us to adopt the kids.

Elio and I exchanged a glance and caught the mockery in each other's eyes. Yet, we stayed patiently and responded politely.

"I knew you wouldn't turn your back on me. You saved my life before. If you could take in my kids, I could finally rest in peace."

Scarlett grabbed my hand with her tearful eyes.

I let my eyes glisten a little to feign empathy as I held her hand to comfort her.

"Hey, don't be so pessimistic. Medicine has come a long way, and new treatments and drugs are being developed all the time. You're still young, and I'm sure a miracle could happen!"

I got up and reached for my car keys.

"I actually know a few top oncologist specialists. I'll take you to the hospital today for a full checkup. Maybe there's still hope."

Scarlett's expression froze and stiffened. Her gaze darted nervously as she instinctively took a step back.

"No need to go through all that trouble. I've already done tons of checkups before."

Feigning confusion, I looked at her with concern. "Oh, come on. One more test can give you peace of mind. Maybe a more advanced treatment is available now.

"Don't turn it down. I'm sure your kids would want you to get better, too. Am I right, kids?"

As I spoke, I smiled at the twins hiding behind her.

Before Scarlett could say more, I tugged at her arm jokingly and walked toward the door. "Come on, the car is right downstairs. We're doing this checkup today. No excuses."

Her body stiffened immediately. Panic flashed in her eyes as she tried to pull away.

Then, she suddenly smacked her forehead, as if she had just remembered an urgent matter. "Oh, I almost forgot! The daycare teacher just texted me. The kids forgot something important, and I need to send it over right now. I really can't go today."

With that, she quickly yanked her hand free.

She ignored her children's flinching and snatched her bag off the floor.

Not even wearing her shoes properly, she bolted for the door.

"Next time! We'll go next time!" she blurted before slamming the door shut behind her.

Her footsteps faded quickly down the hallway.

The public opinion shifted overnight."That little girl is terrifying. How could she do something like that?""Thank God for the security footage, or else that couple would've been ruined." "No way! Are kids these days so manipulative?""Stop saying children are always innocent. Think about what you were like at that age." "Can you imagine if people had actually believed her? That poor man would've never cleared his name." Since the twins were still young, the police decided not to press charges against them. They just gave the twins a stern lecture and made them write a formal apology. That was the end of the matter. It was also clear that we could no longer keep the twins with us.We wouldn't want any more trouble down the line. That was when Scarlett seized her opportunity. She rushed over in tears, collapsing to the ground and screaming at the top of her lungs, "Felicity, you monster! I trusted you with my kids, and this is how you treat them? Do you even have a cons

From that point on, Elio and I completely changed the way we treated the twins. We used to worry about their studies, help with homework, and check their assignments. But now, we couldn't care less. Whether their grades went up or down, we paid no attention to them. They were ungrateful brats anyway, so we shouldn't waste our effort on them.We only handled their basic survival needs. I still cooked for them every day, but I no longer bothered about their nutrition like I used to.As for their clothes, we bought the cheapest ones without caring about their disapproving looks. When they cried, complained, or made unreasonable demands, we simply turned them out.My attitude caused a ripple effect. Someone online claimed I was secretly mistreating the kids and never gave them any pocket money.People on social media started gossiping and criticizing me endlessly. So, I put together a detailed presentation to break down all the monthly expenses for the twins, from their meals

To address those who still doubted me and to keep a record of this unusual experience, I recorded every visit to the orphanage and every bit of help I offered the children. Then, I compiled everything into photo posts I shared online. To avoid their constant harassment and prevent them from coveting our house, Elio and I decided to play along strategically. We found one of Elio's most trusted relatives and officially transferred the house under their name. After handling the paperwork, we began subtly spreading bad news within the neighborhood and any social circle the kids might be connected to.With a weary and troubled expression, I went around spreading rumors."My husband's business hit a huge snag. He's deep in debt, so we had to sell the house to pay it off. Now we're barely scraping by."Even so, I would still add, "Times are hard, but I'll still do whatever I can for those two kids. They're pitiful, after all."I thought pretending to be broke and struggling would make

I looked up at the two kids in front of me. They were just like their mother, adept at putting on a show."Ms. Quinn, we're not freeloading. This money is what Mommy left us to live on. Please, take us in, and I promise to take good care of you when I grow up."With trembling hands, Charlene took out a passbook and forced it into my handbag.I pretended to be heartbroken and handed it back."Darling, you're such a poor thing. But I'm not your family, so I can't take this."I turned to the officers and asked them to find a good orphanage for the kids. The officers seemed to understand. After all, I wasn't the kids' legal guardian, so it wasn't my responsibility to raise them.Caleb's expression changed when he saw one of the officers making a call to his relatives. Panic and anger flashed across his face.He quickly grabbed my hand. "Ms. Quinn, please don't send us to an orphanage. Don't be so cruel."I sighed helplessly. "Kid, I'm not your family. But I'll visit you when I can

As soon as we finalized the property transfer and divided the assets, they betrayed us.Charlene began telling people that Elio had been cruel to her.Through tears, she claimed that she had endured years of emotional and physical abuse.Even Caleb stepped up to testify to her story.Charlene even posted on social media that she had been taking antidepressants for years. Her long, dramatic post painted us as villains and nailed us to the pillars of shame. The neighbors and friends who once praised us now looked

Caleb carefully unfolded the letter. "My mommy said you were her only best friend in her entire life."I took the letter from him. The paper had already yellowed, and the handwriting was faint and hard to read.My mind couldn't help but drift back to the past.…Scarlett and I came from the same remote mountain village.Surrounded by hills, the only road that led out was a winding dirt path.Back then, my parents had to leave for the city to make a living, so I became one of those children who were left behind to live with their old grandparents.Scarlett's house was right next to mine. I remembered one summer when it rained nonstop for days, causing the village river to swell. While playing by the river, I slipped and fell in.The current swallowed me in an instant while terror and despair closed in on me.
