***Dylanne

I hate the subways. They just make me hate my job even more. I mean, rubbing skin together. Worse? Whatever the other person put on their bodies. It only worsened my OCD.

But here I am at 9 a.m., sitting through it. I hate working a 9-to-5, but it pays the bills on my table and helps me save some money for Eric. Eric's my 18-year-old blind brother who was in foster care.

When the train stopped, I pushed through the thousands of people and got out. My hands straightened my thrifted brown silk shirt that matched my ebony skin, paired with some small black shoes and a skirt. My brown hair was packed in a tight bun this time, highlighting my minimal makeup. I walked through the tunnels with the air smelling like piss and cheap weed.

My phone pinged with notifications from Penny, and no response from Kim. I'd check on her after work. After a lot of trekking and wearing my knuckles out, I got to the office: Prism Logic Inc. in Downtown Manhattan. I walked through the big ceiling-to-floor glass doors and scurried to my small cubicle.

Around here, I'm seen as an assistant, but basically, I just help build custom software and arrange data solutions for big clients, sometimes, even the government. Basically, like fixing outdated systems. My boss, Rhys Baker, walked out the minute I said hello to Penny.

“Omg, girl, where have you been? I've been calling your phone forever,” she whispered.

I liked Penny. She was the only one who was nice to me in this office. The rest just thought I was some chick who wanted to seduce the boss.

“360… check who it is. Our hot, able boss,” she shrieked, quietly pointing.

I giggled, picking up my pad as I walked over to where Rhys was. The moment he caught my eye, he flashed that killer smile of his.

I loved working with Rhys because he was always happier around me, for some reason, and it made working with him feel even better.

“Glad you're at work, Dylanne. I tried to reach you earlier.”

“Really? I didn't get that,” I said, pulling out my phone to check my missed calls and messages.

“I got you something,” he said, snapping his fingers. Security walked in carrying a massive bouquet of daisies that nearly covered their faces. I froze, shocked, sizing up the flowers from top to bottom. This was bigger than others.

I glanced around at my coworkers' faces.

Some sighed, others rolled their eyes, whispering to the people next to them. Penny stood wide-eyed, mouth open, then made a blowjob sign, thank God Rhys didn't catch it.

She'd always said he had a thing for me, with these constant flowers every week. I mean, I'm not saying he's not good-looking. A 6’4 with those amazing sea-blue eyes, and he smells so damn good. But he's just not my type.

“I know you said no more flowers, but one last one? And if you agree, can I take you out tonight?”

“Sir—”

“Come on, Dyl.”

I felt uncomfortable, fidgeting with the hem of my shirt as my eyes darted.I focused on my job and gave it my all, day and night. But this? This just gave people a chance to call me a slut behind my back.

“I think we need to focus on work right now. Then I'll give you my answer?”

“Sure,” he said gently, that charming grin lighting up his face as we headed straight to his office.

“You mentioned an important client coming over? I want to know what they need and their goals. I've already laid out a plan, so we can go through—”

He laughed, cutting me off, one hand on his chest as he full-on cackled.

“What?” I asked, confused.

“I don't think we need that for this client. He already knows how this place runs. We've been friends for years.”

“Oh.” I set my pad down on my chest. “If that's the case, I'm relieved. Is there anything else I should know about him? What does he like?”

“Nothing much. I think you'll like him. He can't handle dullards, and I know how smart you are, so I paired you both together.”

I shook my head as we turned the corner and pushed open the door to his office. There stood Kai in a dingy-colored suit, hands jammed in his pockets, dark hair brushing his neck, ink peeking out like a second skin.

My pad slipped from my fingers and hit the floor. My heart slammed against my ribs, breath catching in my throat. I tried to calm my unsteady breaths but failed.

Rhys stepped in behind me, his easy vibe shifting to concern. “Whoa, Dyl, you okay?” He placed a warm hand on my shoulder, but I barely felt it with my eyes locked on Kai.

“Dyl? You work here?” Kai asked, his voice low and edged with surprise.

His tongue was the first thing I felt. It was hot, wet, and deliberate as it dragged slowly up my slit. A sharp gasp tore from my throat. I gripped the edge of the seat, my hips twitching involuntarily as Kai settled fully between my spread thighs. The Jeep’s tinted windows and the quiet side street gave us a fragile illusion of privacy, but the thrill of possibly being caught only made my pulse race faster.“Kai…” I moaned, threading my fingers through his hair.He didn’t answer with words. Instead, he answered with his mouth. His lips sealed around my clit, sucking gently while the flat of his tongue flicked over the sensitive bundle of nerves. My back arched off the pillow he’d placed beneath me. Pleasure shot through me like lightning, making my toes curl inside my heels.“Fuck, you taste so good,” he growled against my pussy, the vibration sending fresh sparks through my core. He licked me again, slower this time, savoring every inch. Two thick fingers pushed back inside me, curl

****Dylanne I smoothed my hands over my dress one last time as I stood in front of the mirror. Kai had called yesterday and asked me to prepare for a date. A simple date, I presumed.I picked up my black bag and walked out of my apartment. He stood with his back resting on his jeep, flowers in hand. I smiled and hurried to him before taking the bouquet.“You ready?”“Yes.” He opened the car door for me like a gentleman. I slid in, buckled my seat belt, and waited as he walked around the car and climbed into the front seat.I had no idea where we were going, so I sat still and asked no questions. I was already walking a thin line, I believed. Kim had told me she’d spoken to him, but the two of us needed to talk about this sooner. So when I got his message yesterday I was over the moon and accepted the invitation. The drive was slow and quiet. Neither of us spoke. I watched him from the corner of my eye; when he turned, I looked away, acting as if I had never been staring.“How have yo

****Dylanne “You went on a date with Rhys?!” Kim asked, stunned.“Yes , and no.”“And? Why didn’t you tell me about this?”“I didn’t think it was important. Rhys had been asking me out for months. It was right before Kai came back, and I’d been saying no.”She folded her arms. “And? You suddenly agreed to a date with my brother’s best friend?”“No, no.”I knew this looked bad, probably terrible, but I needed Kai to answer me. He hadn’t since yesterday and I was slowly losing my mind.“So?”“Rhys asked me again, and yesterday I went. It was just a normal date between friends. I had no idea why he called Kai or what he told him.”Kim sighed and crossed one leg over the other. “I don’t know what you want me to do this time, Dyl. I don’t think I can convince my brother.”“Please. You can. He hasn’t been answering any of my calls or texts.”“Well, that’s because he’s mad at you.”“I know that.” I moved closer and put my hand on the back of the couch. “Just help me talk to him. ****Kai“You want me to do what?”She paused, not saying a single word. I can't… do it.There's no way she wants me to do something like that. She stood, eyes turned away, arms folded across her chest.“I can't keep putting my brother's life at risk.”“And I apologized for that—”“An apology is not enough, Kai. Don't you see? Eric was hurt today and it was because of a marriage. You either stop it or you do it.”How could she speak like this? It was like my Dylanne had vanished and been replaced by someone else.“Dyl—”“What?”“You can't tell me to marry someone I don't know. What about us? Where does that leave us?”“I don't know what to do.” She sank back down, hands in her hair, fingers tugging at the strands. It was maddening, yes, but marrying Hinato? No fucking way.She looked at me now; her eyes were wet, tears gathering prettily at the corners. “This is my brother, Kai. He is not just some kid. He is my flesh and blood. Refusing whatever this is is like putting his life in dan

****Kai“You told my dad,” I said to Hinato. She looked at me, eyes on her designer watch, before she took a sip of her apple juice. I had paid her a surprise visit at her loft.“You didn't tell me you were coming.” She dropped her legs from the couch and walked back to the fridge to get another glass of juice.“I would have arranged a room for you.”“I don't need your fucking room.”“Oh? How is the young boy doing? I hope the injuries are healing now.”I froze, my eyes on her as she poured the drink into two glasses and walked toward me, offering one.“You ordered that?”She shrugged and then said a simple no, like it was a fun game, like this wasn't a life-and-death situation.“You let them hurt him? He is just a kid.”“And I am a woman who wants to get married.” She paused. “Now, if you aren't here to talk about something else, I suggest you leave. Besides, we have to go for our cake tasting soon. The engagement will be announced in the media soon.”“Fuck!”She smiled, a content on

***Kai I burst through the door and grabbed him by the neck, squeezing tight as he struggled for air. Mom ran toward me, standing at my side and pleading, but I was filled with nothing but anger. I didn't care if he died in my arms; I just wanted him gone. “Kai, please. He is still your father!” She pulled me apart; my fists clenched and unclenched in fury. “Father?! Father?!” I spat. “This man ceased to be my father a long time ago.” Kenji clutched his neck, his breath raspy as he gasped. “You touched him! I warned you not to, didn't I?” He smiled, a content look on his face as he stared at me. “You spoke to Hinato to stop the marriage. I had to teach you a lesson.” Immediately I swung at him. He turned his head as the blow landed; blood oozed from his nose and his lip split. I was ready to go again, but Mom somehow held me, her eyes pleading on his behalf. “Please, Kai. Please don't.” I looked at her, incredulous. How could she stand up for him after everything?
