Rosalie's POV.

Someone had broken into the house mercilessly.

The chairs and other furniture were overturned—no, not just overturned, but destroyed even. The chandeliers were in pieces on the ground. Nothing was left the way it was found when they attacked.

What I found most chilling, though, was the message scratched into the ground:

“YOU MAY HAVE ESCAPED US TODAY, ROSALIE SMITH, BUT YOU CANNOT ESCAPE US FOREVER.”

We stood frozen for a few moments after we read it, until Caleb spoke.

“Rosalie?

Rosalie's POVI stayed on the floor for a long time.Long enough for my legs to go numb and for the cold from the tiles to seep through my clothes. I couldn't stop thinking about Maxwell, about the things he had said, and, most importantly, about the possibility that he had been deceiving me for much longer than I could imagine. He was a werewolf, and Caleb's stepson? How was any of this even possible?I eventually forced myself to stand and walked towards the bed, where I sat with my phone in my hand. I needed to do something. Anything. I couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine when it clearly wasn't.My first thought was the school.I had been invited to participate in the competition, and there had to be people responsible for our accommodation and general welfare. Surely, if I explained that I was uncomfortable sharing a hotel with someone who had been making me feel threatened, they would take me seriously.I opened my email and began composing a message that read:‘CON

Sarah's POV I stared at his contact for another minute before finally pressing the call button after texting him. It rang twice, and I almost ended it on the third ring, suddenly uncertain about exactly what I was going to say to him. How ridiculous. I had spent a lot of time imagining his death, and now I was nervous about having a conversation with him.It was at that moment that he answered. "Sarah?"Even the sound of his voice was enough to make something inside me stir."Hello, Max."There was a brief silence between us."What do you want?"I looked at the caller ID to be sure that it was him and frowned. Was that how he intended to speak to me now? As though I were some irritating salesperson who had interrupted his evening?"Is that how you greet everyone these days?""Only people I don't particularly want to speak to."I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat. There he was again. That horrible, effortless way he had to make me feel insignificant."I was wondering how

Maxwell's POVI walked into my room and shut the door behind me harder than necessary. For a moment, I remained standing with my hand on the handle, staring at the wood as though I could somehow see through it. Then I exhaled, dragged a hand down my face and walked further into the room.Rosalie.Her expression was still fresh in my mind. The horror, the disbelief, the way she had looked at me that told me that I had now gone on to become something she could barely stand to be in the same room with—and I could tell that it was more than just her finding out that I was a werewolf. I walked to the minibar in the room, pulled out a bottle of water, twisted the cap off to quench my thirst, and then set the bottle down with some distaste when I suddenly thought about the way she had reacted when I mentioned him. She had quickly become defensive, as though he was still somewhere in her life and I was thrown out, too horrific to be considered. And then there was the question she had asked m

Rosalie's POV“How is Caleb?” he repeated.I slowly turned my head towards him, hoping he would not see the cold sweat that was forming on my skin. My body was already losing composure, and I felt I was falling apart with how overwhelming everything was for me.It was as though I could never escape this werewolf pack—as though there was always a member of them watching me and following me around. That was if he was truly one of them. "Why are you asking?" I managed to say. He shrugged, slipping one hand into his pocket. "Is there something wrong with asking about an old acquaintance… an old enemy, to be more exact?"I stared at him. There was something about the way he said it that made my stomach tighten. He sounded perfectly casual, almost bored, as though he had simply remembered someone he hadn't spoken to in a while.“I don't know.”“Why?” He asked. “He left you without a care in the world, didn't he?”“That's none of your business,” I snapped. He only smiled, and I looked at h

Rosalie's POVMy steps gradually slowed as the memory came back to me.It had been on Maxwell's back. I had seen it when we were still together, when he had walked around without a shirt, completely oblivious to the fact that I was looking at him and admiring the muscles in his back. The tattoo was an intricately drawn image of a wolf’s head with its teeth bared and a distinctive pattern that I could still picture even now.At the time, I had not thought much of it. Maxwell had told me he liked things that suggested power, and I thought a wolf did, so I did not bother to ask. I had probably even complimented it once, and asked him why it was on his back and not somewhere he could see it. Now, though, I knew something I had not known back then.Caleb had the exact same tattoo, and because he was a werewolf. It couldn't be a coincidence, or could it?I remembered the first time I had discovered what Caleb was. The terror, the disbelief, the way my entire understanding of the man I lov

Rosalie's POV The part about us being on the same floor had not been a joke.Even worse, my door was right opposite Maxwell's.It made me want to complain or try to talk to someone who could make a change, but if he had done this arrangement so that we were this close to each other with the aid of his connections, then there was little I could do. For this reason, I was afraid of even coming outside my own room door.Caleb had helped me deal with Maxwell once, but now I was exposed to him again and there was no one to help me.I tried to minimise my reasons for going out as much as I could, and every time I was forced to, I would do it with a beating heart, my eyes on the opposite door, expecting to see him open it and to find him staring at me.Except… I actually never did.It was almost as though the room was shut close, and no one was in.I was beginning to think he had probably moved out or he had just done it to scare me or to prove some kind of point that he didn't need the ro
