LOGINEleanor’s POV
The boardroom was packed. Shareholders and directors from every department sat around the long mahogany table, but Eleanor was the one at the head of it. She felt euphoric. This was the first board meeting where she would finally showcase her capability, proving to the shareholders why she was a better fit than Eric. She was going to show them exactly why kicking him out as CEO was the wisest decision they had ever made. Part of her was thankful Eric hadn't attended; she would have been pissed just seeing his face. But another part of her wished he were there, just so she could rub this project in his face. This is my time to shine, she thought with a smirk, watching the assistant prepare the presentation. “…Gross income revenue is estimated to be at least 10 billion in the first year of operations,” Eleanor announced, pressing a button. A diagram flashed on the screen showing the projected percentages. A few silent nods of acknowledgment went around the room. In this world, results mattered more than anything. “And this is how the final project is expected to look.” She clicked again, and a 3D image popped up. “A luxury mall housing at least two hundred shops, a hotel, and an amusement park. It is designed to draw in women and children—our primary focus.” “The groundbreaking ceremony is set for the 29th of this month.” A digital invite flashed on the screen. “Multiple dignitaries are expected to attend, including the Governor and the Mayor.” “What about the permits?” one director asked, drawing every eye in the room to Eleanor. “We have all the necessary permissions to commence the project,” she answered professionally. Truth be told, they had the permits, but they had been acquired through underhanded means. Eleanor knew she had used the backdoor to get them. This project is a disaster waiting to explode, the director thought bitterly. There was a reason Eric had never approved of it. “Any questions—?” Eleanor began, but she was interrupted by the shrill ringing of a cellphone. “Apologies, let me take this,” a director said. The person on the other end was speaking in rapid succession. “Hold on, I can't hear you… speak slower.” The more the person on the other side spoke, the grimmer the director's expression became. By the time he hung up, his face was as white as a sheet. Simultaneously, every other phone in the room started ringing like crazy. Eleanor felt a surge of nerves, but she tried to mask it with indifference until her own phone vibrated. “Hello?” she said. Jared’s voice rang out the moment she picked up, and it was filled with pure panic. “Madam… it’s about the project West Bank…” Eleanor froze, the world around her turning into incoherent as Jared delivered the news. Autumn’s POV We were making homemade pizza. Between the pregnancy cravings and my desire to avoid processed fast food, I’d decided to make something from scratch. “Give me! Give me!” Finn said, reaching for the toppings on the counter. I was using this as an opportunity to spend time with him. I wanted to sneak in these moments before the new baby arrived; I knew I’d be occupied soon, and I hated the thought of him feeling neglected. “Here you go,” I said, handing him some cheese. “Yeah! We did it!” he cheered, high-fiving me. I placed our creation in the oven. “How long will it take?” “30 to 40 minutes, my love,” I said, lifting him onto my lap. “Do you want to watch cartoons while we wait?” He jumped for joy. I grabbed the remote and started flipping through the stations, but I stopped when I hit the news. “…The Kingston Group is yet again involved in another scandal—” the anchor began. I started to press forward, then quickly pressed backward to return to the channel. “It was earlier reported that the much-anticipated project by the Kingston Group has been halted indefinitely,” a female anchor said gravely. “With one person confirmed dead and many others presumed injured, we can only foresee a massive hit not only to their reputation but their finances as well. This comes barely three months after Eric Kingston stepped down as President due to the controversies surrounding him and his elder sister, Eleanor stepped in as CEO.” My heart dropped. An accident? On a project of that scale? Eric. I wondered how he must be feeling. This company was his blood and sweat; he had worked on it from his youth until now, and now Eleanor was burning it to the ground. I needed to find him. I instructed the maid to look after the oven and Finn, then hurried toward his study. I knew he hadn't gone out today. “Sir, the permits for the building project were obtained through underhanded means,” I heard Gabriel reporting as I approached the door. So that’s why it collapsed. I dug my nails into my palms. “The number of lawsuits estimated to hit the company will drain them financially,” Gabriel finished. Eric remained silent throughout the whole exchange. “How do you want to proceed?” Gabriel asked. “Nothing,” Eric answered coldly. I couldn't take it. I burst into the office without knocking. “Are you being serious right now?” I heard a soft “Ma’am” from Gabriel, but I ignored him. “You can’t just let Eleanor destroy what you spent years building!” I tried to reason with him. “You are still the Chairman. If not for yourself, then do it for your ancestors who left this for you. This is their legacy as much as it is yours. You can't let her destroy everything.” Eric didn't even look up at me. “Mind your own business,” he uttered, his voice like ice. The words died in my throat. I felt a stinging behind my eyes, but I forced myself to stay calm. “You’re right,” I said, my fists clenched at my sides. I walked away before I could say anything else. He was right—this was a war between him and his sister. I was just a Kingston by name, not by blood. As I walked down the hall, I felt the weight of Sebastian’s opportunity in my mind. Eric had just given me the final push I needed.I closed the laptop and packed my things into my bag. My body felt sore from sitting all day, every muscle protesting as I finally stood up. I stepped out of my office just as the elevator pinged, waiting for me.“You leaving?”I jumped, clutching my chest as Sebastian appeared out of nowhere. “You scared me!”He just chuckled at my reaction. “Oh, you should have seen your face.”I stared at him, not finding it even remotely funny. My expression remained stony. “You aren’t funny, you know,” I muttered.“Come on, it’s not work-related,” he said, his tone softening when he saw I was genuinely stressed. “I’m treating a few members of the Compliance team to dinner, and I was wondering if you’d be interested in joining us?”I was surprised. He was really trying to help me bond with the team and bridge the gap in that hostile environment.“I can’t,” I answered. As much as I wanted to go, I couldn’t risk Eric finding out. Even if he thought I was just at a pottery class, a late-night dinner
The past couple of days had been stressful, to say the least. Reviewing documents over and over again made me feel like I was going insane; the jargons were starting to jam together in my mind.I rubbed my forehead to ease the tension. My body felt heavy, a deep-seated exhaustion settling into my bones. As soon as I entered the room, I kicked off my shoes. This constant back-and-forth—playing the role of the housewife and the Chief Compliance Officer—wasn't helping. In fact, it was making everything worse.I knew if I told Eric the truth, he wouldn’t be keen on it. He would prefer I stayed home and became a traditional housewife—the typical lifestyle of the rich, where women are placed as accessories rather than partners.‘I don’t want this for my daughter,’I thought, pulling off my clothes. I don’t want her to feel like a decoration instead of a person. I would tell Eric when the time was right, but for now, it remained a secret.I took a hot shower to soothe my nerves. When I stepp
The taxi pulled up at the entrance with only a few minutes to spare before I’d be considered late. I didn’t want my record to start with a black mark on day one.I walked in with my head held high. I had to meet my supervisor for my first debriefing and task assignments. My onboarding email had instructed me that the Compliance Department was on the fourth floor; that was where I’d find my new team.As the elevator climbed, I felt ecstatic. Every floor we passed made my heart palpitate with anticipation. I wonder what they’ll be like? I asked myself as I stepped out into the hallway.I walked toward the main workspace and pushed open the heavy doors, only to be met by a dozen curious, cold stares.“Hi,” I said, looking around. “Could someone tell me where the supervisor’s office is?”I was met with nothing but silence and blatant ignorance. What the hell? I thought. I hadn't even been there five minutes and I was already being treated like a pariah.“The supervisor’s office is over t
It was my first day of work. I was euphoric at the idea of finally starting; I had waited for this day for so long to finally implement my strategies and plans. Most people wouldn't be happy about a corporate job, but I was not most people.I woke up at 6:00 AM to get Finn ready. Even though the maids already had everything handled, I needed to do something, or else I might go insane from anxiety. I made his breakfast and lunch myself. I tried to eat something, too, but my body wouldn’t permit it.Once he was off to school, I went inside to get ready. I chose an inexpensive outfit—just a simple dress with flats. I kept my makeup light, just like the day before, and made my way to the door. I had devised an amazing plan to distract the staff from my whereabouts; I just needed to get to my car.But as I stepped outside, I didn’t see my car. I saw Eric’s.Instantly, dread washed over me. God no. I thought he had already gone to work.“Where are you going?”His voice came from behind me,
“Autumn, where are you?” I heard him repeat the question. I was sweating bullets under his scrutiny. His words were controlled, but I knew he was seconds away from doing something rash. I wondered if he would be right here, forcing me to resign before I even started.“Chloe told me you disappeared when you two went shopping. Nobody has been able to reach you; your location was turned off as well,” he added. His words made me realize he didn't actually know where I had been. I could use this to my advantage if I executed it properly.“I went to the hospital,” I said, trying to make my voice sound as tired as possible to disguise my nerves. “I felt some cramps and decided to go check it out. I switched off my phone so I could rest for a bit,” I explained weakly. I caught the cab driver staring at me in the rearview mirror and quickly looked away.Sighing, he finally asked, “Are you okay?”The former anger had finally dissipated. He sounded worried, even. “Where are you now?” he asked fo
After waiting a few hours for Sebastian's reply, I finally got something. He asked for my resume so he could set up an interview. That was what I was currently doing—getting ready to prove myself.“Good morning,” Sebastian said when I picked up the phone. He sounded happy.“You sound happy,” I pointed out.“Why wouldn’t I be?” he said with a laugh. “The talent I’ve been scouting finally agreed.”“Well, you were convincing,” I said, finishing the last details of my attire. “I hope you get a bonus for this, Mr. Recruiter,” I teased.“Don’t worry about that,” he waved me off. “Just focus on nailing this interview. It’s at 10 o'clock.” With that, he hung up.I jumped into the shower, focusing on making sure I was chic and presentable. I was the only one at home with the domestic staff; Finn was in school and Eric had gone to work, making it easier for me to leave. I didn't want Eric knowing about this yet. He was a jealous man, and I would tell him another time.I got dressed in a blouse

Sebastian’s POVHe sat on the leather sofa overlooking the London skyline. It was a starless night, the moon’s rays smothered by heavy, glowing clouds. Below, the city buzzed with artificial life, yet it was nothing compared to the absolute darkness residing within the sanctity of this room.“Repor
The chandeliers gleamed high up in the ceiling, casting a beautiful, intricate spiral of glass against the ornate plaster. Why was I so invested in a ceiling and a bunch of crystals? I didn't know. Maybe it was just the sheer weight of the stress, the kind that makes your neck stiff and your mind l
Chapter 59Eric’s POVI had instructed Gabriel to use the earlier released paternity test to curb the false reports circulating all over the internet. I knew it was Eleanor’s doing; it had her signature impatience. She hadn't been announced as CEO yet, so she decided tarnishing my image with false
