Brittney

My conversation with Claire freed up most of the weight hanging on my chest.

Shortly after Andre and the other guys showed up when she left, I chose to retreat into my room for the night.

This time, I popped two sleeping pills into my mouth and in less than ten minutes, I was out like a light.

The next morning, I woke up past 9, way beyond the time I was supposed to wake up, but I didn't mind as I felt refreshed and calm for the first time in months.

I was tempted to take a day off and just laze around in bed today but I couldn't hide behind the chaos that was my life forever.

Sooner or later, I would need to face it.

On my way to the kitchen, I made a quick stop in at Samantha's room but sadly, the bed was made and she was gone.

Half expecting everyone to have left, I didn't bother tying up my robe, only to run smack into Andre, who was shirtless and had his hands bunched up into fists, pacing around and muttering to himself.

He was so focused and absorbed in whatever he was

BrittneyI couldn't sleep. Trust me. I tried to.I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling of Andre’s guest room, my thoughts spinning in circles. The shadows from the window stretched across the walls, moving whenever the wind stirred the curtains, but it wasn’t the darkness that kept me awake.Strangely, I welcomed it.No, it was the silence. It was too heavy. Too loud. The kind of silence that left space for your fears to crawl out and haunt you.The messages from earlier wouldn’t leave my mind. Each time I shut my eyes, itfloated around in my brain. Those short, clipped words: If you want the truth, meet me. Midnight. The pier.No name.No number I could trace.Just the promise…or the threat… of answers.I rolled onto my side, clenching my pillow, wishing I could quiet the doubts clawing at me.Andre had been kind, protective since The troubles began but something about him felt… veiled.Like he was hiding behind those carefully chosen words. He was always busy, always taking call

BrittanyI don’t know what unsettled me more…the message on my phone or the way Claire smiled like she hadn’t just walked into the midst of something she couldn’t possibly understand. Except… what if she did?The words echoed in my head: Watch her.Claire perched on the edge of the couch, shaking the rain from her hair and kicking off her slippers like she belonged here. The sight of her so comfortable in Andre’s home sent irritation crawling up my skin.I couldn't point out why.“You could’ve called,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.“Oh, trust me I did,” she replied smoothly. “But you didn’t answer.”Liar.My phone had been in my hand all night, lighting up with messages that weren’t hers.Andre leaned against the counter, arms folded, watching her with an intensity that made the room feel smaller. The way the two of them avoided talking to each other makes me feel like there's something else that was going on between them.He wasn’t a man of much of words, but right now I want

BrittanyThe steam from my mug curled into the air like it wanted to spell out the words I couldn’t say.I wrapped my hands around the edges, steadying myself with the heat, while my mind refused to stop replaying every second in Brian’s office. The sharpness in his tone. The way he said Andre’s name.It wasn’t casual, not in the least. His words were heavy…edgy and loaded with meaning.Andre sat across from me at the counter, stirring his coffee as if the clink of the spoon against the glass could distract him from the silence between us.His shoulders were tense, too still for someone who claimed to be relaxing.“You’ve been quiet,” he said finally, his voice low, careful. He always spoke carefully these days, wary of my mood and reluctance to talk.Like each word was a match that could set us both on fire.I forced my eyes up to meet his. Those dark, steady eyes that once gave me safety now only made me feel like I was peering into a locked room for which I didn’t have the key.So

The door to Brian’s office clicked shut behind me, but the weight of the conversation pressed down heavier than the oak frame ever could. My legs carried me down the hall, though I couldn’t feel them.My heart was still pounding from the file he’d tossed across the table, from the way he’d said Andre’s name out loud as if he owned it, as if the truth of us were just another line item in a quarterly report.I wrapped my arms tight around myself as I walked, ignoring the curious glances of employees who passed by. The air-conditioning blasted overhead, yet I felt hot, clammy, exposed.Claire.Her name pinged at the back of my mind like a warning bell. She knew about Andre. She knew about me moving into his apartment. There weren’t many people who did. And who else would feed that kind of information to Brian?I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I almost missed it… her voice.I slowed, my heels clicking softer against the tile until I stopped just outside one of the side offices. The

BrittneyMy palms were so sweaty.Despite the AC blasting through the hallways, I could feel a trickle of sweat roll down between my breasts.Usually, I wouldn't feel so apprehensive meeting up with Brian, but Katrina walked up to me, practically shaking in her shoes, attesting to his mood.On my way over to his floor, I racked my brain trying to figure out why he would be so pissed at me.Nothing jumped out at me.Sighing, I listened to my heels clicking on the tile floor as I neared his office, my heart pounding so hard that it was a surprise others couldn't hear it as I walked past. It's gonna be okay, it's going to be okay, it's going to be okay….I chanted the words in my head, hoping they would calm me down but as I turned the corner and saw him standing like an angry principal, my heart took a nosedive.Shit.Nevertheless, I plastered a wide smile on my face, my hands clasped in front of me. “You wanted to see me, sir?”“Hi, Brittany.” He glances at me for a fraction of a secon

AndreI made a mad dash to the right, my heart beating so fast. This wasn't how I was expecting things to go.I obviously expected some form of resistance from him but straight on attacking me wasn't a part of it.“David, I think you need to calm down so we can talk this out…” I called gently. “I'm here to talk… that's all.”“Is that why you're holding a switchblade to my face?” David sneered, his movements unsteady. “Who are you with? Who are you working for? Did Carlos send you?”I had no idea who Carlos was, but David seemed to be quite afraid of him.“What if I am?” I taunted, balancing on the balls of my feet. “I think you and I both know it's time to collect.”The mention of this Carlos character made him stand still, shoving fingers into his hair. “Fuck! I promised Carlos that I would pay for the shipment tomorrow. Can't you ask him for a little bit more time?”I shrugged, acting like I knew what he was talking about. “I'm sorry, man. No can do.”To my surprise, a triumphant gr
