Brittney

Pushing aside the nerves, I twisted the doorknob and pulled it inwards.

The door swung open gently to reveal Andre standing behind the door holding a cup of steaming hot coffee.

My heart, which was already restless from the night before, skipped in my chest.

Not because I wasn't expecting him to show up but because of how good he looked.

A black shirt was stretched across his toned chest, his hair messed up in a way that suggested he had been running his hands through it.

“Oh…. Um, hi,” I said quickly, too quickly, as though I’d been caught in the middle of something I shouldn’t be doing.

“Hey, good morning,” he replied, his voice low, steady, but his eyes…. those sinful orbs roamed over my face like he was searching for something I didn’t want him to find.

I leaned against the doorframe, feigning nonchalance, though my pulse thrummed at the base of my throat.

Surely, he couldn't have known that I was staring at the note moments before he showed up.

“Are you okay?”

I hesitate

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 132

LeilaThe hotel room we were in smelled of old money and secrets.Whoever had decorated it clearly thought velvet curtains and heavy carpets whispered luxury, but to me it reeked of cheapness…. The kind of decoration that was common in a low-class brothel. It also stank of desperation. The kind that brought me here, sitting across from Adam Willis at a polished mahogany table, pretending that a half-drunk glass of wine steadied my nerves. It didn’t.Claire lounged on the loveseat near the window, her posture hunched with annoyance, as if she’d been dragged into a business meeting she had no patience for.I stared at her, the light flutter of pride I felt whenever I looked at her present. My beautiful daughter. The one Andre had sidelined. She was supposed to be at the forefront of the company, running it behind the scenes not doing whatever she currently was.She had so much potential that should be exploited instead, but it lay dormant. And I hated Andre more for it.Because it was a

BrittneyWhen Andre burst into the room, he wasn’t the composed businessman who wore quiet suits and quieter smiles. He came in like a storm… hair mussed from the run, shirt collar undone, the lines around his mouth carved hard from fear.He went straight to my bedside and didn’t bother with small talk; he dropped to the chair beside me and braced his hands on the rail as if clinging to something that might otherwise fly away.“Brittany,” he breathed, like he’d been rehearsing that name against some private horror he witnessed. His voice shoo slightly. For the first time, I thought I might actually see fear in his eyes.Relief hit me harder than I expected. He was here. He was real. He was standing in the room, and I could breathe a bit easier knowing that he was around. It wasn't until he said the first stupid, inevitable thing.“You should have called me!” he said, too loud in the calm room. “You knew how dangerous it was and yet you snuck out of the house! At the first sign of dang

BrittneyMy chest heaved, every breath I inhaled felt shallow and ragged, as I spun between Grace Miller behind me and the shadowed figure blocking the door ahead.Sweat ran down my arms, my pulse beating like a frantic drum in my ears.I was caught, like an animal in a trap, and the air was too thick to breathe.“Where do you think you’re going?” Grace’s voice lashed out, sharp, cutting through the tension. She stepped forward, her eyes glinting with intent, too focused on me to see the veiled figure ahead. Her lips twisted into that cruel little smile that said she thought she’d already won.The masked figure didn’t move, just stood there, shoulders squared, blocking any chance of escape. My gaze darted past him, searching to the left where the kitchen had an open window that was too high, and too far to get into.Balancing on the balls of my feet, I weighed my options.I could go backwards to Grace, but the scary look in her eyes made me pause, and then there was the veiled figure

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 129

BrittneyThe door was only several inches away.I made a mad dash toward it, every muscle in my body screaming for freedom, for air, for escape. My fingertips brushed the frame…. I was so close that I could almost touch it-But then I was rudely yanked backwards.A weight crashed into my back with bone-jarring force, sending me sprawling to the floor.I let out a startled cry that broke the silence as my knees scraped the wood, my flesh splitting open.A heavy breath got knocked out of me, sharp and painful, when her body slammed me down and pinned me beneath her.“No!” I thrashed, clawing at the floor as I tried to throw her off my back but her grip was relentless.“Wjere do you think you're going, missy?” she hissed, her voice hot against my ear.Her fingers dug into my wrists like iron clamps, yanking them behind my back. “Are you trying to run away?”I couldn't respond, too consumed with pain to think straight. The taste of dust filled my mouth as she slammed the side of my head a

BrittneyStaring at the box, I took one look at her before I reached for it.The sound of the lock snapping open echoed too loudly in the small, dim room.My heart raced, half-hoping that what I would find wasn't as Earth's shattering as she made it seem.My wrists strained against the cuffs as I reached forward. For one breathless second, I imagined something grotesque inside…. bones, blood, or proof of whatever twisted point she wanted to make. But when I lifted the lid, the sight inside was nothing I could’ve prepared for.Inside were photographs.Dozens of them, scattered and overlapping like broken memories pieced together. My mother’s face leapt out at me first… her younger, brighter smile captured in faded Polaroids. Her arm was slung around the very woman standing across from me.She looked away different but then…. younger, brighter and full of life but there was no mistaking her identity. They looked inseparable, almost like sisters. In one photo, they wore identical sundres

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 127

BrittneyWaking up felt weird, like I'd been submerged in a jar of jelly and was now recovering.I came awake slowly, my system booting one after the other. My eyes fluttered open; my eyelids felt heavy, and my tongue felt thick and bitter in my mouth. What the hell?I was disoriented for the first few seconds and I thought I was in my room…. That was until I tried to move and realized that my right hand was restricted. The shock was sharp and immediate. My eyes flew open fully instantly, the sleep disappearing from my eyes as I tried to sit up, but something tugged me back with a hard, unyielding pull. The cold bite of metal was unmistakable.I tried to pull away again, and the restriction remained, followed by the light jangle of chains. My heart began to pound, and I blinked rapidly, willing my eyes to adjust to the murky, dim light above me.Where the hell was I?I tried to look around for clues but nothing stood out to me.The air was damp, stale with mildew and something metall
