Brittney

‘You can no longer access this number, do you want to try another alternative?” The female operator on the other end of the line rolled the words out in a clinical, professional manner.

I paused, staring at the chipped paint on the wall in front of me.

What alternative? I wanted to ask but I knew that she wouldn't really have the answers to the questions plauging my heart.

Without saying another word, I ended the call, throwing my head back to stare at the ceiling.

It was checked and dirty, with cobwebs hanging in corners but what really disturbed me was the thick stain at the centre.

An old lady that occupies the fly directly above us has plumbing issues and sometimes, when the water overflows, it leaks down to us, staining the ceiling and affecting the wiring.

We've reached out to the landlord and aside from telling us to fix it with our money, he never responded to another of our texts.

As I stared at the damp, wet spot, I think to myself…

Is this where I'm going to raise

Andre“Are you sure I should be doing this?” I question Lionel, glancing at the folder again. “Isn’t it illegal or something?”Instead of holding a meeting at the club, he’s come down to the office and even though I felt uneasy about this, it doesn’t seem out of place for my lawyer to visit me.“Not if you’re not in the room,” Lionel points out.“What do you mean?” I tossed the folder on the desk.“I’ve arranged with a guard to allow you to look in from a one-way mirror.”“But why?” I pressed. “I don’t need to be in a sit-in on this, and you wouldn’t come to me if it wasn’t important, so…”Lionel squirms in his seat. “I received a tip a couple of hours ago that the lawyer on the defense is procuring a means to blow this whole thing out of the water.”“I don’t understand, you think he’s got evidence?” I grunt out. “I thought you assured me that there’s nothing out there that could hurt me or this case!”“Don’t you get it?!” he bursts out. “I think he has something bigger than evidence.

Andre“Can I get more salad on the table please?” I call out to our chef, Lisa. “That, and another bottle of wine.”“Any more wine and I'll be picking you off the floor tonight.” Leila threw a barb, giving me a side look.I ignored it, of course, focused on Lisa. “Thanks, Lisa.”Until the wine comes, I keep myself busy with the chicken.Leila keeps throwing looks my way, but I pretend not to notice. “Wow, are things that bad that you can't even pretend to have a conversation with me?”“Why should I? You keep forgetting that there's only so much you can pretend, not to mention that the staff knows everything.”Leila stiffened. “No, they don't.”I snorted, shaking my head.If she wants to keep deceiving herself, then she's free.Claire walks in dressed in a suit that shows she's just coming from the office. “Hello, sorry I'm late.”“Welcome darling,” Leila purrs, leaning in so Claire could kiss her cheek.I grunted in response, mentally counting down the minutes until I could leave the

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 33

A week later…BrittneyI folded my arms across my chest, glancing at the watch strapped to my wrist. He's ten minutes late.If not for the fact that I had promised to wait, I would have turned around and walked right down to the bus station. In case you were wondering who I'm meeting up with, it's none other than Jason Bloom.Yeah, the lawyer who showed up on my doorstep a week ago was basically begging me to turn against Andre in an upcoming trial.I honestly wasn't going to give him the time of day, but Jane convinced me to at least find out if he's telling the truth.I don't know much about lawyers, but from what I've seen in movies, they're particularly skilled at twisting the truth to favor themselves. If there's the tiniest bit of truth, then I need to know so I can decide what to do next. The cold wind slashes at my face and exposed legs even though I was standing by the sidewalk.Dammit, where the hell is he? I wondered, stomping about to regain blood flowing in my legs.If he

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 32

BrittneyStaring sightlessly at the TV screen, I wondered why this had happened to me as I went over the conversation I had with Bloom. The conversation went on for longer than I expected, which resulted in me calling in sick to work today.Shaken by his bold declaration, I stepped backwards, only then realizing we were still standing in the doorway. “Um, forgive my manners. Do you want to come in? Let's talk about this inside.”“Of course.” He stepped in and I followed closely behind, thoughts of running late taking a backseat in my mind. There were many more important things…like how he knew who I was, and the fact that I was connected to Andre.“Can I get you anything?” I asked, standing awkwardly in the middle of the room. “I think I've got water or soda…”“Miss Larson, I appreciate your offer but can we just talk about what I said out there?” He said politely.“Okay but first off, I've got my own questions.” I couldn't sit, too amped up to sit in one position so I simply placed m

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 31

AndreWhen Michelle walked back out to escort Lionel in, I went over to my desk, pouring several shots of whiskey into a glass, knowing that whatever reasons that pulled him out of his pretty home wouldn't be ‘nice’.Another reason why I'm so eager to see him is because of Brittney. It's weird how during the time I fell into a depressive mood, I would seek him out. Lionel always indulged me, at first, out of obligation and then because we grew closer and he felt it was his responsibility.Because he's trustworthy, I entrusted him with the task of finding Brittney. It's been years since we've made any real progress, so I stopped myself from hoping, but now that he's shown up unannounced…a part of me couldn't help but hope that it's about something related to Brittney. The door made a creaking noise as it opened, Michelle poking her head through before disappearing altogether and Lionel's face took her place. His face was drawn and tight, no sign of the easygoing smile I’d come to know

  • My Bestfriend’s Father   Chapter 30

Brittney“Sam, come on, we'll be late if you don't hurry up!” I yelled, hurriedly tucking my blouse into my pants. My job as an assistant to a powerful man in New York didn't leave much time for lateness.Brian has been more than kind enough to accept me, even though I have a kid, and I'm not gonna mess it up.Taking a brush to my hair, I vigorously combed it through before placing it in a bun on top of my head.Slipping on my accessories, I took a second look at the mirror.Everything looked put together. My eyes dipped to my feet, making me realise I don't have shoes on.Crap.I searched for my shoes, aware that Sam's room is way too quiet.“Sam, please put on your shoes and stop playing with that toy!” I yelled once again, trying not to get upset.Remembering the tips Sam's babysitter gave me, I sucked in deep breaths, exhaling through my mouth. Finally, I found my shoes at the back of the bed and slipped them on.Then I picked up my bag and walked out the door, heading down the sh
