Wren's Pov

I haven't been this nervous since the last time I had been called into the dean’s office after I had been caught smoking in the students' restroom. I mean, I was sixteen, but I had lied so hard the man took a minute to stare at me, shocked, wondering if he was hearing right.

“You can do this,” I mumbled for the umpteenth time, but somehow, I still couldn't find it in myself to take a step forward.

“Excuse me, are you lost?” a man called out, staring at me with an unamused look.

Heat flooded my cheeks as I cleared my throat. “Sorry, I just... today is my first day and I just, I am kind of nervous, you know those jitters that come with new territory and everything...”

“If you don't want to be taken for loitering, I suggest you walk in.”

I blinked back at the shock. “Oh, sorry.” I walked into the building, trying to shake off the feeling that nagged at my chest. That was something, wasn't it?

“Excuse me, I am...”

“Wren Anderson, you are meant to report on the 6th floor, and I must say, you are late.”

“I... traffic...”

“6th floor.” She cut me off, turning her attention back to the laptop she had been operating.

“Thanks,” I said, even though I knew that there was nothing that she had done for me. “Are they all rude here?” I muttered to myself.

I reached the elevator, letting out the breath that I was holding; just a door and the next minute, I was going to be standing right in front of the big boss.

“Sorry, you have to use the stairs. The elevator is out of order.”

Fuck! Today isn't my day, is it?

“Thank you.”

I stared at the stairs, wondering if this was worth it. I mean, I could just turn away, and.... I shook my head, fighting off the thought that flooded my mind. I knew what that was. That was the little side of me, trying to hide away at home.

But I had debts to pay and a freaking sister to make sure that she was saved in the hospital.

It was a long walk, but I wasn't going to lie and say I didn't hate it; I did, every minute of it. But when I reached the top stairs, I smiled in victory. “Yes,” I fisted the air. Now, I needed a minute to actually breathe.

“I need to do more cardio.”

I found a lady sitting in the hallway. “How many receptions do they have?” I muttered under my breath as I walked towards her. Secretly, I am hoping that this one is nothing like the first person I met downstairs.

“Hi, i am...”

“You are late.” Her tone was sharp, clipped as she stared at me with disdain in her eyes.

“Oh, the elevator was broken, and I had to...”

“Word of advice: if you are going to work here, improvisation is key. Don't hand out excuses if you are not resourceful.”

Okay, there must be something special in the water that they are all drinking here. Why is everyone so rude?

Her eyes scanned my form; her lips tugged in a sneer. “I don't think you are a good fit for this...” My heart sank; I couldn’t lose a job without even starting it. Her eyes glinted, mischief shining bright in them. “I will have the security take you out. You don't fit to be here...”

The phone on the table rang. “Good morning, Mr. Blackwood,” she purred into the call, a wide smile on her face as she listened to what the person on the other line was saying.

Blackwood? Why did the name sound so familiar?

Her eyes were on me, a smile on her face. “She isn't here, I don't think she...”

You have to be kidding me. Anger surged through me as I turned, storming toward the big mahogany door that literally looked like a pathway to another realm. “Hey, you can't walk in there,” she hissed, her heels clicking hard on the ground as she tried to catch up with me.

“Watch me,” I snapped. Pushing the door as I stormed in. If she thinks I am going to stand and watch her try to ruin everything that I have worked for, she was a joker.

The door let out a loud groan as I pushed through it, stepping right into the room, with the rude lady right behind me.

“What the hell is going on?” The voice boomed. I froze in the spot; I had heard that voice before; I have.... My eyes widened when I stared at the figure sitting behind the desk, his eyes on me.

No!

“Mr. Blackwood, she is trying to create a nuisance; she arrived fifteen minutes late, and I told her...”

“Close the door behind you, Blake.” his tone was gruff as he dismissed her.

“But you hate tardiness...”

“Leave, Blake.” This time, he was firmer, his eyes barely leaving mine.

The door closed behind her. My feet felt like they were rooted in place; I couldn't move, couldn't bring myself to recover from the shock that I was feeling.

“Ms. Wren,” I turned to the man who had interviewed me. “Good to see that you finally made it.” He smiled softly at me.

I looked around the room, my fists clenched at my sides as I looked at them. “What is going on here?” I finally found my voice.

Callum twirled his chair as he slowly stood to his feet. He had that gleam, that look that had drawn me to him that night. “Welcome to your new world.”

My breath hitched; it wasn't true. I turned towards the man I had been talking to, expecting that he would say something to help me, but he said nothing.

He stood to his feet. “Callum, see you at the golf club.” he tipped his head as he walked out of the room.

The door slammed closed behind him, signalling that I was stuck in this room alone with Callum Blackwood, the man who had given me the best orgasm, and the rudest awakening.

What the hell did I just walk into?

Wren's PovI looked like I had been run over by a freaking train. I had spent the whole night unhealthily thinking about what it would have been like if Callum had kissed me. And then there had been a side of me that had been angry that I was thinking about him kissing me when I could just have anyone but him.‘But we don’t want him. Do we?’ my mind taunted. I rolled my eyes, ignoring the thought in my head, forcing my attention on making sure that I lined my eyes with enough eyeliner to hide the fact that I was trying to hide my swollen eyes.“Good morning, Wren.” I bit back a groan when I pushed the door open; Mr. Brian was already leaning against his door, his eyes on me with that smile that always sends chills down my spine.“Mr. Brian. Good morning.” I smiled at him.His eyes took in my form, that twisted smile still on his lips. “You know, you don’t have to call me Mr. Brian; we are neighbours. We can be friends, don’t you think so?” he wink

Wren’s PovI didn’t bother returning to the office after the showdown that I had with Callum and Taryn. Whatever that was, I didn’t want to be anywhere near it.That fire wasn’t something that I needed. I already have enough smoke going on around me; I didn’t want to add rich, pompous men to my list of sorrows. There was a knock on the door. For a minute I thought it was Anna, but I quickly checked myself. Anna wouldn’t knock; she would let herself in, while singing in her loudest chipmunk voice. I let out a sigh; I missed my friend; for days now, it felt like we had been on some distant friendship band. The knock sounded louder. “I am coming!” I groaned, dropping the tray of mac and cheese I was about to throw into the microwave. I pushed the door open, already regretting that I didn’t look through the peephole. I wasn’t ready to deal with Mr. Brian, the neighbor who stared at me as if he were undressing me.“Mr. Callum?” I stared at the figure s

Callum's PovI stared at Taryn, thinking of the best ways that fucking rip his head off his shoulders. But I knew that I couldn’t do that. Mark would blow a fuse if he heard that I had attacked Taryn. And truthfully, I wasn’t in the mood to listen to him give me lectures on how to treat people. “What are you doing here, Taryn?” I asked, trying to keep my anger at bay.He grinned, his eyes looking around the office. “You know, I miss having these...”“Taryn, I am sure you didn’t drive all the way from your office to mine, just to tell me you miss me?” I snapped, my patience already wearing thin.He laughed. “Are you always this cynical?” he asked.I balled my fists under the table, keeping my breath at an even pace, anything to stop thinking about having to punch the smug bastard in front of me. He cleared his throat, smirking at me as if he heard my thought. “Okay. I need a favour from you.”I cocked my brows; Taryn needed my help? That was something I didn’t see coming. “What d

Wren's PovONE WEEK LATER“So how is it going?” Anna’s voice echoed through the phone. It's been three days since I last heard from her. I knew life was getting busy for everyone, but it felt like I had seen more of her when I was dating Josh than now.“Nothing daunting. Just work and barely any time to relax.” I muttered, pressing the coffee machine as I waited to get my early dose of coffee. Things weren’t as horrible as I thought they would be; everyone had their mind on the jobs. Well, mostly everyone. Blake had made it a point of duty always to point out things that I may have missed, no matter how tiny they are.“How is the man? I saw his picture; he is something, don’t you think so?” she whispered. I rolled my eyes; of course she would think that; she wasn’t the one working under him. “Maybe you can try to...”“Anna, I am here to work, nothing more than that. Elizabeth needs everything that she can get from me.”She let out a huff. “I

Wren's PovBlake walked in front of me; there was something about the way she would look over my shoulder, as if she was making sure that I followed.“You are lucky, you know that?” She smiled, but it wasn’t that polite kind of smile. It was the smile I had seen a thousand times with girls who never liked me.“A lot of people have tried, but no one has gotten mr blackwood’s attention until now.” Her eyes scanned me from head to toe, her lips curled in a sneer. “How did you do it?”“I didn’t do anything,” I said in a low tone. She rolled her eyes, waving her hand. “You don’t have to play coy. You can tell me, i want to know how you got the mighty Callum Blackwood to look at you.”Anger surged through me, i hated how she made it sound like this was something that I wanted. “I didn’t do anything, i saw a job vacancy and I applied.”She hummed. “Okay, if you don’t want to tell, I understand. We have to keep our tricks to ourselves.” She walked into a large office space, i could see

Callum's PovFuck, that was all that my brain could come up with. She looked stunning in the beige skirt that looked like a freaking second skin; all that I wanted to do was have her bent over the table as I took her in ways we couldn't deny. But I knew I wouldn't be able to achieve that, not with the fire that I was seeing in her eyes, the flame that has been keeping me alive for way too long.“Sit, we should get over the details of your job description,” I said, trying to keep my excitement at bay.She blinked, as if she was slowly waking from the trance. “I am not working for you,” her voice was low as she looked at me with a burning glare in her eyes.I cocked my brows, stuffing my hands in my pockets as I watched her. I didn't miss the way her eyes trailed down my body, stopping right on the half-bulging mass that tented my trousers.“Where will you be working?” I asked in a low tone. She looked back at where Mark had sat; anger s

Wren’s POVI woke up alone, feeling utterly and totally satisfied. Yet for whatever reason, I couldn’t recall why. After taking a shower, I noticed some bruising on my thighs, and a hickey on my neck. Some of last night's memories came rushing in.
