It’s 9:27, A.M....

I stood in front of the mirror inside my office suite and decided that looking effortless required far too much effort.

My lipstick was perfect.

My hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders, deliberately effortless enough to make people forget there was a highly paid hairstylist behind the concept. I wore high-waisted black pants, an ivory silk blouse, and a blazer cut sharply enough to injure someone without leaving evidence.

I looked like myself.

Mama narrowed her eyes at the screen. “You still haven’t changed out of your work clothes?”I looked down at my black T-shirt and linen pants that I’d changed into ten minutes ago. “I already changed.”“You still have your meeting face.”“My face is expensive.”“That’s not an answer.”“That’s an answer I pay for with skincare.”Max carried the iPad over to the sofa, then sat cross-legged on the rug right in front of the coffee table. “Abuela, I ate carrots.”Mama immediately pressed a hand to her chest. “¡Ay, qué milagro!”Papa clapped softly. “How many?”Max held up three fingers.I leaned against the island. “One.”Max turned sharply. “Mami, that’s confidential.”Mama laughed loudly. “He’s like Noah when he was little. Always telling half the truth with an angel face.”“Excuse me,” I said. “Noah still does that.”Papa nodded slowly. “A little.”Mama pointed at Papa without looking at him. “Don’t defend your son. Last week Noah said he ‘might have’ forgotten his own kid’s birthday pa

  • My Billionaire's Ex Husband's Secret Heir   Peace, Love, & Regulatory Violations

My house greeted me with the sound of tiny plastic wheels hitting the oak floor.Tok.Tok-tok.Tok.“Fast lane!” Max yelled from the living room.I barely had time to set my bag on the console before something red and blue shot past the foyer with an alarming amount of confidence for a three-wheeled vehicle. Max was sitting on his little tricycle, his chubby legs pedaling wildly, his yellow shirt already replaced by a white monster truck T-shirt, black hair falling over his forehead, and his cheeks still carrying the aftermath of whatever dramatic life he’d lived through at lunch.“Maxime.”He didn’t stop. “I’m in traffic.”“Traffic usually doesn’t happen inside the house.”“This is LA.”Annoyingly, his argument wasn’t entirely wrong. He pedaled past the sofa, nearly clipped the ottoman, then took a sharp turn with his whole body leaning sideways like a very short Formula 1 driver who had never paid taxes. Behind him, his little dinosaur blanket dragged along the floor, tied to the ba

“You waived spousal support,” he continued. “You didn’t file a claim on any property, investments, shares, or marital assets. There was no settlement.”“I know what I signed.” I kept walking.“You were entitled to half of several assets.”I let out a laugh. “And this is why I don’t take legal advice from ex-husband.”“You could have taken enough that you’d never have to work again.”I stopped walking.Rafael stopped too.Dust passed between us, carried by the ocean wind. Behind him, the concrete mansion rose half-finished, raw and expensive. He stood in the middle of it all in a white shirt that was still far too clean for a construction site, dark sunglasses hanging from one hand, his face calm in a way that might have made a normal person feel safe. I had never had the luxury of being normal around him.“I couldn’t bring myself to take it,” I said.Rafael lifted an eyebrow. “Why?”“Because your family spent an entire night explaining that I married you for your money.” I adjusted th

My breath caught in my throat. On the screen, Max was still holding up the second piece of carrot like he was presenting evidence to a jury. His little mouth moved, saying something about the size not meeting the terms of the contract, but his voice sounded far away, buried beneath the hum of the AC and the single sentence Rafael had just used to split the modular office into a before and an after.Athena didn’t answer.I could see her reflection in the small window. Her shoulders were stiff, one hand still resting on top of her closed laptop. Rafael sat across from her without moving, but his head was tilted slightly in Athena’s direction with the cold patience of someone who wasn’t used to letting a question die without an answer.“Mami?”I looked back at the screen.Max had lowered the carrot. His blue eyes narrowed suspiciously. “You froze.”“Connection.”“Gaby didn’t freeze.”“Because she’s sitting next to you, Max.” I let out a small laugh. “Mami has to get back to work, baby.”

The temporary site office was made up of two modular containers joined together, folding tables, plastic chairs, air-conditioning that was too cold, and a small window overlooking the ocean.A rendering of the mansion was taped to one wall, a massive schedule covered another, and the coffee machine looked like it had lost all faith in humanity.Lunch arrived in white boxes: salad for Noelle, a turkey sandwich for Athena, and grilled chicken for me. I had no idea what Rafael had ordered because he only opened his box, looked at the contents for a moment, then took a call before he could touch any of it.Noelle sat at the end of the table with Evan, discussing the pocket door changes, while Vincent was outside with the superintendent, probably trying to figure out how to explain that forgetting to order the custom steel was actually a very expensive learning experience. Across from Rafael, Athena already had her laptop open, and the moment his call ended, they went right back to arguing

“That float is already gone,” Athena said.“There are eleven days.”“Four.”“The latest schedule update shows eleven.”“Because the latest update included the weather allowance as available float.”“It’s still float.”“In Malibu during marine layer season?”“The forecast doesn’t show any major delays.”Athena laughed once without humor. “The forecast also didn’t show you forgetting to issue the purchase order.”Vincent exhaled sharply.Rafael was still looking at the schedule on the tablet. “Athena’s right. Effective float is four days.”Athena glanced at him. “Three and a half.”“Four if the second-shift inspection is approved.”“The building department won’t provide a second-shift inspection on a Friday.”“They will if the request goes in today.”“Based on what?”“Based on the fact that their deputy inspector still owes us an approval from Carbon Beach.”Athena narrowed her eyes. “That’s blackmail.”“Leverage.”“Fantasy.”“Operational probability.”“Delusion with a spreadsheet.”Noe

Max pressed his lips together, then slowly pulled out the chair. He tried to climb up by himself, his chubby knee pushing into the seat cushion, one hand gripping the edge of the table. His face was so serious, as if he were scaling the Pottery Barn version of Everest. Once he managed to sit, he im

  • My Billionaire's Ex Husband's Secret Heir   The House by the Sea

My house sat inside a gated community far too expensive for people who still had real-life problems, but Los Angeles had always possessed a slightly cruel sense of humor. At the front gate, the security guard gave a small nod when he saw my car. I lowered the window and offered the minimum required

We went downstairs together. The house was still full of clean morning light, the large glass windows in the living room catching the color of the ocean in the distance. In the kitchen, Max’s breakfast was almost gone: small pieces of pancake, strawberries, scrambled eggs he had eaten while complain

Today, Maxime Rivera decided that uniform shorts were a form of oppression.I knew this before he said it, because he was already lying flat on his back on the bedroom rug with one leg in the air, his black hair sticking out in every direction, his bangs covering almost half his forehead, and his wh
