At exactly nine, the gate intercom rang.

I was standing by the kitchen window when the monitor lit up, showing Rowan Blackwood at the pedestrian gate with three people dressed in dark clothes. A utility vehicle with a small Blackwood Systems logo was parked outside, loaded with black equipment cases that looked considerably more expensive than all the electronics I'd owned when I first started Aster House.

Rowan looked up at the camera. “Morning, Sasha.”

I pressed the intercom. “Please tell me y

“I know.” I pulled the blanket over my legs. “But I've already spoken to my counsel and Rowan. Athena's also putting together the project documentation. There's nothing we're going to accomplish by sitting in my living room in the middle of the night, except maybe finding the three Lego pieces Gabriella couldn't locate earlier this afternoon.”Rafael was quiet for a moment. “All right.”I raised an eyebrow. “All right?”“Yes.”“Wow. That was suspiciously easy.”“You said you didn't want me to come over. I heard you.”I opened my mouth, then closed it again.Well. Now he was making me look like a woman who was disappointed that her ex-husband didn't want to argue with her.“Good,” I said, trying to sound completely unaffected. “I'm glad your listening skills have improved so dramatically.”“I'm trying.”Something about the way he said it made me stop searching for a sarcastic comeback. There was no mockery in his voice this time. He said it casually, almost like an ordinary comment, bu

“Then what about our disclosure?” I asked.“What about it?”“The document you brought into the Aster House conference room a few weeks ago. The one that almost made me consider adding letter openers to the list of prohibited items during meetings.”“I remember.”“Of course you do. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life.”“You spent almost an hour arguing over who was allowed to keep a single document.”“Because you wanted everyone in the legal department to have access to my marital history.”“I never said everyone.”“Rafael.”“And you got the terms you wanted.”I rolled my eyes.Unfortunately, he was right.I still remembered sitting across from him in that conference room, crossing out clause after clause until we finally agreed that the original document would be kept confidential by Claire Donovan, the Jamessons' general counsel, while Moretti's counsel would receive only confirmation that the disclosure had been completed, without any details about our marriage

I sat down on the edge of the bed, smoothing out the part of my cardigan that had gotten bunched up beneath my thigh.“What photo?” he asked.“Max outside his preschool with Gabriella. He's carrying his backpack and Kevin. Noelle said the photo was in one of the attachments, along with Max's personal information.”“The photo that was sent to Aster House?”“From her description, yes. The timestamp matches too.”“Have you seen the file?”“Not yet. My counsel is requesting the original email and all the attachments from the Jamessons' legal team.”“So we don't know if it's the exact same file.”I snorted. “You and Rowan should start a club. You could sit around comparing metadata and discussing the importance of not jumping to conclusions before getting the original files.”“Blackwood said the same thing?”“Almost word for word. It's becoming annoying.”“For once, I agree with him.”Well, now. If Rafael was starting to agree with Rowan Blackwood, maybe it was time to check whether an ast

I stared at his name for a moment. The man had spent most of the afternoon with my son. When he left, Max had even asked when Rafael could come over again.I still hadn't given him an answer. And now, just a few hours later, I had to call that same man and tell him someone was using our personal information to put pressure on the Jamesson family.God really needed to consider offering single mothers some paid vacation days.I tapped his name.“Sasha.” He answered on the second ring. His voice was low, a little rough, and I could immediately tell he wasn't in a meeting. There were no conversations or footsteps in the background, just faint silence and the sound of something being set down on a hard surface.I didn't give myself a chance to wonder whether he'd already changed out of his clothes or if that slight rasp in his voice came from the whiskey he usually drank at night.“Someone sent our marriage documents to the Jamessons.”There was no answer on the other end.I walked over to

I glanced at the laptop still lying on my bed.Henry Jamesson. Of course. If someone wanted to cause trouble with the Malibu project, they weren't going to stop at his daughter, who had once considered moving the guesthouse closer to the cliff because the view was better. They'd go straight to the person who actually had power over the contract.“Has your father read it?” I asked.“He has.”“And?”“He hasn't said much. Legal is reviewing the attachments, but they still don't know who sent them.”I brushed my hair off my shoulder. “What does the email say?”Noelle didn't answer right away. I heard a few clicks from her computer.“There's a short message before the attachments,” she said.“Read it.”“Seriously?”“Yes. Word for word, please.”Noelle took a breath, then started reading. The message claimed that Aster House was concealing a personal relationship between its principal architect and the executive review authority at Moretti Holdings. According to the sender, that relationshi

  • My Billionaire's Ex Husband's Secret Heir   a very private public disaster

I stared at the open bedroom door across the hallway, Noelle’s voice still faintly coming through the phone pressed to my ear.Maxime Rivera. That name sounded very different coming from someone who had absolutely no reason to be saying it tonight.“Okay,” I finally said, moving my laptop farther away from the edge of the bed before it fell and gave me another three-thousand-dollar problem. “Tell me exactly what they sent you.”“Give me a second. I'm opening the attachments.”I heard something being set down on a desk, followed by the sound of a keyboard on her end.I got out of bed and walked toward the door, only to stop when I realized I was still holding my laptop charger, its cord trailing all the way back to the outlet.Wonderful.Apparently, my ability to multitask had disappeared the moment my son's name showed up in an anonymous document.I unplugged the charger, set it on my dresser, and brought the phone back to my ear. “Okay. I'm listening.”“There are a few PDFs,” Noelle

After lunch, I moved my laptop and iPad into the living room. I cracked the glass door open so the sea breeze could slip in.
