Chapter 2 Mass Betrayal

Author: Bang Bang
"I've disliked Eliza for a long time. There aren't many projects to go around, yet she always steals the job. In the end, nothing comes of it," someone said.

"Mary’s growth was slow only because she’s not as loose as Eliza. Once, an old pervert grabbed her bottom, and she didn’t even react. Deep down, she must’ve enjoyed it."

My entire body went ice cold as disappointment washed over me.

"We've worked together for years. I've helped you all the time, and you all know my true nature. Now, just to brown-nose the new supervisor, you throw away your dignity!" I snapped.

People had always been fickle.

However, I had always treated my subordinates like they were my friends.

When the company’s cash flow ran dry and layoffs started, I used my own money to keep the staff employed.

"Rory, when you first joined us, you sent the cost sheet to the client instead of the actual quote. If I hadn't stepped in, you would've been forced to compensate millions in damages."

My voice turned icy as I faced the other man who had spoken.

"You as well. When you were unable to feed yourself because you had no commissions, I was the one who gave you part of my dividends. Did you all forget that?"

Mary clenched her fists and cut me off. "What's the use of bringing up small favors? Why didn't you mention just how much you've earned all this time?

"It's a senior's duty to help the newcomers. Now that you've been fired, are you going to hold that over everyone's heads?"

Those who had been hanging their heads low from the admonishment heaved sighs of relief. They immediately began praising Mary's generosity while accusing me of being petty.

Overwhelmed with fury at the absurdity, I abandoned the argument and headed to my old desk.

The moment I opened the door, what I saw made my face go pale in anger. My entire body began trembling.

My personal belongings were scattered across the floor, and all my devices had been powered on.

My documents and chat logs had been rifled through. My locked drawers were pried open—empty. Everything inside was gone.

Even the family photo I placed on the table was shattered, covered by a puddle of rotting instant noodles.

My eyes were bloodshot as I screamed, "Who did this? Step forward right now!"

The entire office instantly fell silent. One could hear a pin drop.

Just as I was about to fly off the handle, Mary gracefully walked over. "Don't be so agitated. I did it."

She blinked innocently.

"The boss said that we're short on desks. Since you're no longer working with us and won't be coming back, the desk would naturally go to someone else."

She held up the Civil Service Exam handbook and looked at me with a mocking grin.

"Who knew a university graduate and saleswoman would be so ambitious? Work in the private sector isn't enough anymore. Instead, you wish to work for the government too.

"Still, you had too many belongings. We didn't know which were actually yours, so we confiscated everything. You have no objections, right?"

Rory chimed in, eager to support her. "Searching just the office isn’t enough. What if she stole company property and still has it on her?

"We should strip and search her!"

The absurdity hit me like a slap.

I barked out, "This is nothing but revenge dressed up as justice!"

With a grin, Mary waved a hand, summoning several men over to surround me. "I'm only doing this for the company's sake. After all, who can guarantee that you're innocent?"

My entire body was shaking in fury, but Mary ignored my reaction.

With her hands planted on her hips, she continued to speak in a loud voice. "Ms. Lane, we're all colleagues. I don't want to strain our relationship.

"Will you be stripping, or do you need our help?"

My teeth dug into my lower lip in humiliation as rage burned through my veins. I wanted nothing more than to rip that smug expression off her face.

When I did not move, she locked the door with a raised eyebrow and held my laptop up high.

"You've worked here for years, so you must've made a lot of connections. Isn't that right?" she asked in a threatening tone. "You know better than I do the consequences if I delete everything on here right now. Strip. Think of it as a bonus for everyone, and I’ll let you walk away afterward."

At the end of the year, our unit assigned inspection tasks.Since I had dealt with many companies and knew their accounting books like the back of my hand, the leader gave me a difficult case."We received a public report that this company's accounts are suspicious. We believe they're falsifying records."As I took a closer look, I noticed it was Kai's company. When I led the team and pushed open the office door, Kai's expression was absolutely priceless. His eyes widened in shock, and even his legs trembled uncontrollably.I took out the documents and said sternly, "I'm Eliza Lane from the Tax Bureau. Please cooperate with our tax inspection.""Eliza…" Kai stammered. "When did you start working for the Tax Bureau?"I smiled and replied, "Thanks to you, Mr. Moran. It was on the very day you fired me."His office employees recognized me and began whispering."Why is Eliza back? Is she here for revenge?"Mary, holding a stack of files, caught my eye. She froze like a cat whose

Instead, it was Mary who ran after me. Her eyes filled with desperate pleading as she said, "Eliza, you joined Mr. Chandler's company, right? Could you take me with you?"In our industry, it was common to bring trusted subordinates along when switching jobs.Even Rory was looking at me pitifully and begged, "Eliza, for the sake of our years of friendship, you can't just watch me die here!"I refused without hesitation."Once bitten, twice shy. Mary, taking you with me would mean I haven't learned my lesson. Do you think I'm going to wait for you to backstab me again? If I really took you two with me, that would be a crime. I'd go to prison."Before they could say anything else, I got into the cab and left.In the rear-view mirror, the two crying figures shrank into tiny dots, then disappeared completely.…Half a year later, after finishing my probation, I was officially hired. The new job didn't pay much, but it was stable. My coworkers were friendly, and there were no endl

At that moment, all hope was shattered. Kai was so furious that he nearly fainted. He grabbed Rory by the collar and roared, "Who allowed you to mess with company property?"Rory was bewildered by Kai's reaction, and her legs were shaking in fear. "It was Ms. Hansen. She said she didn't want to see any trace of Eliza, so she told me to delete everything…"Before Rory could finish her words, Mary immediately cut her off. She glared viciously at Rory and said, "Stop spouting nonsense! You did it on your own! Get out! You're fired!"Rory stood there in a daze. In that split second, security rushed in, grabbed her by the arms, and dragged her out of the office.Kai snatched the laptop and attempted to recover the data. The moment he confirmed it had truly been formatted, his body went limp. His expression turned blank with despair."Get the tech department here! If they can't recover it, they’re all fired!"I watched coldly from the side and said, "It's useless. All company lapto

Kai was completely thrown off guard by Mary's words. Shock and fury crashed through his eyes as he roared, "Don't you dare, Eliza! That source code is the company's private property. "You would be committing a crime if you leaked it to others! Plus, we signed a non-compete agreement, and the penalty is one billion. No one could afford to pay for it!"Now that the facade had crumbled, he revealed his true colors instantly.I let out a soft laugh and said coldly, "I don't need you to remind me about this. Of course, I am aware of the non-compete agreement. "However, talking about the penalty won't help you, Mr. Moran. After all, you still haven't paid me the monthly non-compete compensation I'm owed."Kai was infuriated. Gritting his teeth, he snarled, "You've already resigned. What's the point of holding onto the source code? This is just your revenge on me, to force me into admitting that I was wrong."Then, with dramatic self-pity, he called all the employees over. In front

Mary sucked in a sharp breath.Seeing that I refused to help her, she dropped to her knees right in the crowded lobby of the apartment building."Please, Eliza. I beg you. You caused such a huge mess at work, yet you are now leaving? What are the rest of us supposed to do with it? You're the one who deleted the code. Only you can restore it. If you're really that heartless, I might as well die!"A cold glint flashed in the air. All of a sudden, Mary pulled out a sharp knife and held it to her throat.Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably. Bowing over and over until her forehead reddened, she pleaded, "Please help me just this once. After this, I swear I'll never bother you again!"Under the sympathetic and curious stares of the neighbors, I thought about how I might have to go through a background check at my new job, and I didn't want things to get too ugly.Hence, I had no choice but to follow Mary back.…The moment the elevator doors opened, Kai was

In less than two weeks, Mary was knocking on my door."Eliza, you bitch! How dare you set me up! You knew the original code was stored in those folders, yet you provoked me into deleting them!"I frowned and made sure to block the doorway so that she could not force her way into my home. When Mary noticed the suit I was wearing, she let out a cold scoff. "I never knew you could be so vain. You've been unemployed for days, yet you still have the mood to buy new office clothing," she said in a biting, passive-aggressive tone.As I had just returned home from work, I was too exhausted to continue arguing with her. However, my silence was an implicit confession in Mary's eyes. With glee written all over her face, she said, "While you set me up, I'm not a petty woman. As long as you bow and apologize, then restore the original code, I can be gracious enough to forgive you. I'll even hire you as my assistant."That demand only made me laugh. I pulled out my phone and played the video
