On Monday morning I come into work to find a big bouquet of peachy coloured dahlias on my desk. They’re beautiful, with a faintly sweet fragrance.

I wondered who they could be from. I doubted Jay, because I didn’t tell him where I worked even though we spent Friday night and all of Saturday in my bed. My brother isn’t the type to send flowers, my father certainly isn’t. And I doubted Caleb would, because that would be highly inappropriate.

The card pegged to the arrangement read: ‘The house feels empty without you, flower. I miss you so much. Mum xxx’

I sighed and slumped into my chair.

I didn’t hate my mother. She was a good mum, she’d raised me, and I knew she loved me. But she was content living under my father’s thumb, and that made it difficult to trust her. I had divorced from my father—that was our deal. If I didn’t agree to marry his choice for me, then I’d be disowned. I chose to be disowned. My father would no longer acknowledge me. He’d tried to impress this upon my mother

Where the bloody fuck was Rae?Caleb had been calling her for ten minutes to get more coffee and tea for the auditors, and she wasn’t answering her damn phone. It was embarrassing.“Maybe this is a good time to take a proper break,” the head auditor, a kind woman in her late sixties suggested. “I need to stretch my legs.”“Are you sure?”“Absolutely. We’ve been cooped up in here all day. Shall we say fifteen minutes?”The other auditor nodded. “Sounds good.”“Alright,” Caleb conceded. He stood and arched his back, then headed to the door to let them out.Rae wasn’t sitting at her desk when he followed them. The room was empty. Eerily quiet. He wandered down to the reception to see if Becky had seen her. They seemed to be getting on quite well, perhaps she knew more than he did.“Have you seen Miss Buxton?”Becky shook her head. “No, not since lunchtime. Why?”Caleb frowned. “She’s not at her desk.”“Bathroom, maybe?”“For fifteen minutes?”Becky flushed. “Maybe she’s having…you know?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I replied indignantly.“Of course you do. Beautiful little thing like you is hard to forget. Especially in that next to nothing dress you were wearing.”This was a disaster. I needed to get away. “You’re mistaken,” I snapped, standing from my chair. “And I’d appreciate it if you’d either sit and wait all the way over there, or leave.”“What’s the fun in that? Now I know that Caleb likes to sample his staff every now and then, I’m wondering if I should do the same.”“You’re delusional.” I felt sick. I marched around my desk the other way, out of Dingle’s reach with a bitten, “Excuse me.”“Where are you off to?” he sneered.I started walking in the direction of the bathroom, my steps hurried. I knew there was every chance Dingle would follow, but he couldn’t make it obvious he was stalking me if he did. There were too many people around for that. The closest bathrooms were at the end of a small corridor next to the waiting area. I’d never seen

Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK.“Is Caleb around?” Ed Dingle asked without preamble. I hadn’t paid much attention to him in DDs when I first saw him just over a week ago, but I recognised him straight away, and he wasn’t a pretty man. Simply put, he was short, fat, and bald. He stood with his hands in his pockets, his gaunt face covered in a light sheen of sweat, as if the walk from the elevator to here had been too strenuous. His beady eyes looked too small on his big head, and his suit was a dirty brown colour.“He’s in an all-day meeting, unfortunately,” I told him.Dingle kissed his teeth and put his hands on his hips. The action was so cartoonish that I had to fight hard to keep a straight face. “Bugger.”“If you’d like,” I offered, “I can pass on a message for you the next time I speak to him.”“How long will that be? I wanted to speak to him today.”“Just whenever he next asks for refreshments.”He sighed. “I really can’t just talk to him now?”“It’s an audit.”“It’ll

By Friday, I’d found my groove. I had a routine in place—come in, order coffees, print a physical copy of Caleb’s and my calendars for the day and learn what I could about his visitors, categorise my emails by manner of urgency and then start working on them. Of course, I let the rest of my day pan out depending on Caleb, but so far I felt like I was managing pretty well.He only had one meeting that morning, and then as Sara said he would, he left at 1 o’clock to meet his mother for their weekly lunch date.I hadn’t seen much of him since Tuesday. He was out most of Wednesday and had solid meetings all day Thursday, so besides a “Good morning, Rae,” from him when he came in each morning, that was all the conversation we’d had. Even after his comically short meeting with Ms Black on Tuesday, he hadn’t come back out of his office. I don’t know what their meeting had been about, but she was spitting mad when she left. Like a bat out of hell. I would’ve cackled my way to home time if I

Rae had steam coming out of her ears when Caleb got back to the office, and he knew exactly who put her in that mood.“Is Ms Black in my office already?”“She certainly is,” Rae answered without looking at him.He hated how much he liked her fiery side. It was hard not to smile. “Did you offer her a drink?”Her nostrils flared. “Yes.”“Thank you.”Caleb started to leave, but she carried on by saying, “And just so you know, if you get in there and she hasn’t moved her coat off your desk yet, it’s because I offered to hang it for her, but she decided that was a better place for it.”Interesting. “I see. Thank you.”He hated meetings with Celeste, actually. She was an acquaintance from university who monopolised his time and had made repeated attempts to marry him just because her father invested a lot when WolfeTech launched.“Can I ask you a favour?” he said to Rae before he met his maker. He knew he had no right to ask for favours given his behaviour today but he couldn’t face hours o
