Chapter 3

Autor: Madam Fenghuo
On the road, the airless heat of the hold made my head swim.

All I could do was press my face to the gap and gulp down the outside air. The route I had built stayed clear the whole way, with no inspections anywhere.

When I planned it I had already mapped every road condition, including the schedules of every inspection crew along the way.

I had hired professional investigators for all of it.

We drove for three hours.

We reached a wide stretch of open country where a few deer sat under a big tree.

The truck stopped to rest.

Sweat rolled down my forehead in fat drops.

Lawson and Beth jumped down and drank water beside the truck. Beth pulled out a camera and pointed at the deer. "Take a picture of me with them."

Through the gap, I watched them talking and laughing.

They seemed to have forgotten I was still in the hold.

They set up a table for a quick meal. My stomach was growling so hard I had to swallow.

I pounded on the hold door, and only then did Lawson notice me.

He saw that my clothes were soaked through with sweat and frowned. "Why didn't you wear something lighter? How could you not sweat in something that thick? Take the body armor off."

Beth looked startled for a second too, and handed me a bottle of water. "Also, don't change yet, or you'll just sweat through it again before we hit the transfer station. We'll all change then."

I pressed my lips together and drank half the bottle.

They put up a simple tent for lunch.

I sat down and found that the food wasn't the pasta in tomato sauce I had packed. It was something loaded with chili.

Beth said, "Runs like this are rough enough. If the food is bad on top of it, that's real misery. Annie, sit down."

"This is Lawson's favorite thing I make. You should try it."

I frowned and looked at Lawson. "Where's what I packed?"

Lawson said, "I didn't bring it down. Go on, try what Beth made."

I held my fork without moving and said quietly, "Neither of us can eat spicy food."

Something darkened in Lawson's eyes. "What's the harm in trying it? And out here there's nothing good to eat anyway."

Lawson and I had the same taste in food. That was why we could always eat together.

We used to run into each other at the same restaurant, and that was how we met, got to know each other, and ended up together.

Neither of us could handle chili.

Lawson took a big bite first and praised it, smiling. Then he picked up a piece and put it in my mouth while I wasn't looking.

"Happy now? I fed it to you. Doesn't it taste good?"

My tongue lit up with a burning pain. My eyes watered so badly I saw spots, and I had to drink the rest of the water to push the food down.

Beth's smile got even brighter.

After the meal we rested under the tent.

I walked off a distance to use the bathroom.

When I came back, this was what I found.

Lawson's face was going pale. He was clenching his teeth and clutching his stomach.

I saw the cold sweat on his forehead and took the painkillers I always carried out of my bag.

I was about to hand them to Lawson.

But Beth got to him first with a bottle of water, and looked up at me. "Annie, next time don't take more than two minutes in the bathroom. Come back faster, so we can reach somewhere with a store sooner."

"Then we could buy painkillers."

Lawson said through his teeth, "I'm fine."

"I'll drive." Beth glanced at me. "Get in."

I held the painkillers without offering them, and put them back in my bag.

The hold sat high off the ground, and without a step it was hard to climb up.

I nearly fell getting over the edge, and my backpack dropped off my shoulder.

I reached down for it, and Beth shut the door.

I said, "My bag fell."

Beth made a noise. "Got it."

Through the gap I saw that she didn't pick it up.

The truck was already moving. As I watched my bag shrink into the distance, my fingertips trembled.

Somewhere on the road, my stomach started hurting.

Sweat kept breaking out on my forehead, and my whole body went cold.

With my medication gone I had no options left. All I could do was keep drinking water and hope it eased.

Half an hour passed and nothing helped.

The truck sped up. I was thrown around badly in the back, and cargo came loose and slammed into me.

I took out my phone and called Lawson.

Nobody picked up.

I called Beth several times in a row, and the last time she hung up on me.

I curled into a ball and used a crate to shield myself.

But the jolting kept throwing me around the hold, and my forehead hit the corner of a wooden crate. Pain shot through my skull.

My palm came away wet and sticky.

My forehead had split open.

I tried Beth again. This time her phone was off.

  • My Boyfriend and Best Friend Left Me Behind   Chapter 10

Lawson didn't go back to Southport.Instead, he found a place in Northbay, not far from the casino. And there was only one reason I knew that.Every night when I walked into the casino, he was there. He would stand at a distance, holding flowers.I ignored him and kept my attention on my own work.Later I got an email from Beth, cursing me out in it."You are truly vicious. If it weren't for you, he never would have ended our partnership!""Well, you must be satisfied now. Without those deals my father tore into me, and my mother wants me thrown out of the family!""You caused all of it! I treated you like a friend. Why would you do this to me?! You are so unbelievably selfish..."I didn't read to the end, but I already knew what had happened.I didn't reply. I blocked the address.A few days later Lawson stopped staking out the casino. I thought he had finally given up, and quietly congratulated myself.I also started posting guards around the casino. They were there to make sure he n

Beth was next, right after Lawson. She rushed to Northbay without so much as a suitcase and was waiting outside the villa first thing in the morning. The moment she saw me she walked straight up and started in on me. "Enough, Annie. It's been over a month. Are you still not over it?""I did the things you should have been doing.""Do we have to come coax you every single time?""Do you understand how important that load was? If the money couldn't be cleaned, everything we worked for would have been wasted."Listening to her, I couldn't help finding it ridiculous."And? What does that have to do with me? Was there anything in that load for me? Why should I launder your money?"Beth froze. Something dark settled in her eyes."How can you say that?""You built the route for that load, and you planned the handling afterward.""You can't do the work and then walk away from the responsibility."I kept my tone light. "Why should I be responsible for credit that went to you?"Beth lost it comp

A month later I was fully settled in at the casino.I had also laid down new rules for the floor. My father took me around the family business all day, and I moved through every kind of event. Every day was full. For a while, I saw nothing more of Lawson. That changed on the day my new casino opened and I acquired several clubs.Everyone in Northbay knew my name. Stories about me were going around, and plenty of people wanted to talk business with me.That night the celebration ended.I came down off the yacht and pulled my wrap tighter. But then I saw Lawson standing a short distance away, his eyes bloodshot, his hair a mess, and his stubble untrimmed. When he saw me, his lips trembled slightly."Annie, how have you been?"I was thrown for a second, then asked coldly, "Why are you here?"Lawson's expression eased, and he lowered his head, his voice quiet. "I came to see you. I heard you're doing well in Northbay.""Now you've seen me. You can go."I started to leave. He grabbed my wri

I stood up slowly and pushed my hair back. "Northbay. What do you want?"Lawson sounded shocked. "Why did you go to Northbay? Why didn't you talk to me about it first?!""What does it have to do with you? I go where I want."I let out a breath. Whatever patience I used to have was gone.Lawson's voice rose sharply. "What exactly are you being difficult about? Do you have any idea how worried we were!""You don't answer calls, you don't answer messages, all because we didn't turn around for you that day?! And that makes it okay to do something this irresponsible?!"Lawson hadn't changed at all.I listened quietly and laughed under my breath. "If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up.""Wait!" Lawson sounded desperate, and when he spoke again his tone had softened. "We aren't blaming you anymore. Beth took care of the laundering. Come back now and I'll go with you to thank her.""What's so great about Northbay? You're out there alone with nobody looking after you. You've had your fun. I'l

I turned my phone off when I boarded. In Northbay I moved into the villa my mother had arranged. After dinner a video notification popped up. Beth had posted a clip on social media. In it, she and Lawson were soaking up the attention at the dinner, the elders crowded around them with praise.Beth was laughing in that coy way of hers, tipping her head into Lawson's chest every few seconds.I didn't watch more than that. I closed it and shut down every channel that could show me anything about them. Then I turned my phone off again.Five hours later, over coffee at a cafe by the harbor, I finally turned it back on.The second it powered on, dozens of missed calls flooded the screen.More than a dozen unread messages followed.Lawson and Beth had taken turns blowing up my phone. Lawson had sent voice messages.[What is this supposed to mean?][Why is your account closed?][You know perfectly well the payment from yesterday's load has to be cleaned before it can go into the family account.

My eyes went hot, and when I lowered my head a tear landed on the back of my hand.I listened without a sound, my throat locked. They knew exactly how dangerous these runs were, that rivals could follow us and start shooting at any moment. And they still chose to leave me here.I had no gun on me. I had even taken off my body armor. They chose to rush back to a dinner and enjoy being praised by their elders. My vision blurred more and more.Even breathing hurt in my chest.Lawson's voice came through again. "Alright. When you get there, I'll come pick you up.""Call me anytime if anything comes up.""Don't wander off. You don't want outsiders noticing you and getting yourself into trouble. Keep your emotions under control."I drew a breath and hung up before he finished. In that moment the wind stripped the tears off my face. They came down in heavy drops onto the back of my hand, and I couldn't make a single sound. Before we left on this run, my mother had tried to talk me out of goin
